ancientannoyance:

A drawing of Augustine and Mercy framed against a black background, except for a halo of red that sorrounds their heads, with a glowing reddish light emanating from it. Mercy and Augustine are portrayed from the waist up. Augustine looks solid and emotionless, while Mercy is gritting her teeth and crying angrily, her eye aglow. Mercy is in profile, clutching Augustine by the shoulders, while he looks down at her emotionlessly. They are both being strangled by two pairs of red skeleton arms that are reaching from out of the frame, and cluctching around both of their throats. Augustine is a man with light skin, blond hair, and he is wearing a light-coloured shirt and purple striped tie. Mercy is a woman with tan skin and peachy pink hair, and she is wearing a light-coloured shirt and iridiscent white cloak. They both have a slice of ridged bone over their head which almost resembles a laurel crown, but the bone is bleeding down into their heads, and their skin and hair is tinged red in the places where the blood drips.

“Bury me next to you in that unmarked grave, Joy (…) we have hated each other too long and too passionately to stop … but my bones will rest easy next to your bones.”

Another evil is of the day, and would that it were sufficient unto it. We repair the daily deteriorations of the body by eating and drinking, until the day when You will destroy both the belly and the meats, for you will kill our emptiness with a marvellous fullness, and You will clothe this corruptible with eternal incorruption.

But for the present time the necessity is sweet to me, and I fight against that sweetness lest I be taken captive by it. […] This You taught me, that I should learn to take my food as a kind of medicine. But while I am passing from the pain of hunger to the satisfaction of sufficiency, in that very passage the snare of concupiscence lies in wait for me. For the passage is itself a pleasure, yet there is no other way to achieve sufficiency than that which necessity forces us to travel.

–Augustine, Confessions, Book 10

Demand - Need = Desire

But the two times, past and future, how can they be, since the past is no more and the future is not yet? On the other hand, if the present were always present and never flowed away into the past, it would not be time at all but eternity. But if the present is only time, because it flows away into the past, how can we say that it is? For it is, only because it will cease to be. Thus we can affirm that time is only in that it tends towards not-being.

Augustine, Confessions

Today I finally decided to teach myself why in-fans means incapable of speech, and I learned what was left out of my (very, very abbreviated) Latin instruction: fārī is a deponent verb for ‘to say’ or speak, for in the 1st person sing, and is the source of fatum, fama, fabula, praefatio, and presumably a million other things. (Not, interestingly, forum, which is from foris (door, gate).

So Taylor Swift loves the show friends right. And in an episode in season two Phoebe makes up a song about Ross and Rachel and Ross’s then girlfriend and she renames Rachel as Betty for the song.

Could it be a coincedence?
