An axolotl exhibits neoteny by retaining many of its juvenile characteristics into adulthood. Among this salamander’s defining features are exposed gills that flare out from the base of its head.

Axolotls are Mexican salamanders. They’re all crazy looking with their fuzzy gills and flat tails, because axolotls never metamorphosize into adults. They hit sexual maturity while retaining their juevenile forms, which, incidentally, was exactly what I hated about middle school.

Please don’t mind the clutter, it’s been a busy week. But! My partner and I just rescued a very sad looking clubtail iguana yesterday. He’s in rough shape for a large number of reasons and will be going to the vet very soon- let’s just hope he makes it until then. For now, he’s got Jacky for moral support.
