A custom dragon pen commissioned by a lady for her calligrapher mother. Since it was a custom pen and personal birthday gift, it was possible to write her name on it. After painting, the pen is sent off to Brian from Unique Obliques for lacquering and shipping, so the final product is much glossier and shinier than my pictures.

I have been working on a series of videos called Pointed Pen Calligraphy 101, and it is aimed for complete beginners. There are five so far, and the topics touched are stuff like how to set the nib in an oblique holder, different kinds of paper, working environment, body and arm position, grip, drills etc. It’s all very informal and chatty and general and I hope you will enjoy watching them. I am still trying to decide what script to actually demo, as there are so many youtube tutorials already on all kinds of scripts, but I don’t want to jump into stuff like flourishing yet. Any ideas?

This week’s Mailbox Monday is full of hard hitters and jaw droppers. Sometimes I wonder how my postman feels when he sees these beauties, and am impressed he never feels the urge to steal them.. I would, if they weren’t addressed to me!
This first one is from Dao Hoang, an amazing young penman from Vietnam. This guy is so passionate and is getting too good, man. Keep an eye on him and be inspired at his blog.
This gorgeous one is from Dominic J. from England. Check out the gorgeous ornaments and Italics (I think? Or uncial or something?), so ornate.
Last but not least, this beauty from Heather Held, a Master Penman herself. A most beautiful floral monogram.. I will treasure it forever!

I bought a book of quotes and wrote some of them in this video. In the video I mistakenly thought this was a Gillott 604EF, but instead upon closer inspection, it was actually a Spencerian 1 nib.
Someone asked me how long I keep using a nib, well..
I keep my nibs in the holder and do not take them out, but keep the actual nib tip clean with water. So in time ink goes into the flange and crusts up and that’s why this holder looks in such bad shape, though it is still perfectly usable and one of my favs. It just needs a little TLC!
On the left is a pic of a nib that I’ve been using for I think months now. It’s so rusted and crusted that I can’t tell what nib it actually is. I think it may be a Spencerian 1 or 604EF, not sure, the words are completely blackened out, so I placed two new nibs of those next to the old one. Still can’t tell what it was.
You can see the tines are even kind of sprung, and it no longer produces fine lines, but since it is a vintage nib I just can’t bring myself to keep changing so I tend to run my nibs down to the ground like this after months and months of use. It works fine for writing large letters though, and I finally replaced it when it started to skip more than usual.
It is recommended to keep your nibs and holders clean though and replace em often.. don’t do what I do!
