Carving this sculptural, coil built piece. I’m trying to restrain myself and not carve the entire piece top to bottom. I only outlined the top half to carve so we’ll see how it goes. Usually when I do that, I feel like I’m leaving the piece unfinished, but I’m trying to stick to the narrative that this is a “clay body” and that the person is gradually getting their body covered in tattoos. So, the “body” is a work in progress, therefore I can leave it as is, frozen at a moment in time. #lydiathetattooedlady #workinprogress #coilbuiltpottery #carvedpottery

I finally found a way I can start to make better process videos for you guys I went ahead and purchased the @shopcanvas.co light, and although I haven’t got everything sussed about best video practices etc, I’m hoping I’ll get there soon enough, to share some of the process, tips and mesmerizing time lapse imagery!
This first video (sped up x 10) is from today, where I am carving the ‘Garden’ design of a mug using the Sgraffito method. In this case I am using blended slips that I have processed myself as surface decoration. I hope you enjoy!

One of the reasons I fell in love with ceramics is that it’s full of mystery. A lot of times You don’t know what the final result going to look like. It leaves a lot of space for experimenting and surprises.

These new pots and vases just came came out of the kiln this week! I loooove them! Experimenting with a new speckled clay and the glazes react beautifully to the minerals in this clay to create such interesting textures. Also experimenting with layering glazes to create interesting interactions. Each of these were hand thrown on a wheel, then trimmed, bisque fired, glazed, then fired again. The whole process takes about 3 weeks!
