Carving this sculptural, coil built piece. I’m trying to restrain myself and not carve the entire piece top to bottom. I only outlined the top half to carve so we’ll see how it goes. Usually when I do that, I feel like I’m leaving the piece unfinished, but I’m trying to stick to the narrative that this is a “clay body” and that the person is gradually getting their body covered in tattoos. Using the ancient myth of Narcissus, Alex Anderson’s (@100alexanderson) work in investigates the cultural phenomenon of millennial self-absorption. , a figurative sculpture that anchors the entire exhibition, depicts this myth with a kneeling figure adjacent to its own detached head. Further drawing upon this myth, the head of Narcissus is crying, dripping exaggerated golden tears into the pool in which he will drown.

I’ve been experimenting with using more color in my slip work recently which led me to thinking about how I could be more playful three dimensionally. Here’s a vase (inspired in part by some Korean moon jars and Tang Dynasty incense burners) I made using two of my tea bowl forms joined rim to rim with some additions of pulled handle sections.
