It’s Joan of Arc, the Original French Fry!

___

JOKE-OGRAPHY:
1. St. Joan of Arc was a peasant girl who claimed to hear the voices of saints telling her to lead the French army against the English and have Charles VII crowned king of France.  Some French folks, like the Armagnacs, were loyal to Charles, but others, like the Burgundians, were loyal to the English, instead.
2. Before Joan’s forces broke the siege of Orléans (her first great conquest), she had her army take a break from fighting for Ascension Thursday, a feast day we just passed, and one Joan thought too holy for battle.  On that day she had a scribe write a letter warning the English to go home or face God’s wrath.  In this cartoon, she delivers this message personally.
3. The French version of Joan of Arc’s name is Jeanne d'Arc.  In the final panel of this cartoon, the soldier mutters, “That’s a bit dark,” but “dark” is spelled “d'Arc”, because he’s talking about how dark Jeanne d'Arc’s comment was.
4. At the age of about 19, Joan was found guilty of heresy by a slanted court led by a bishop who was loyal to England.  They refused to let her case be heard by the actual pope, and they also refused her pleas for mass, communion, and confession throughout the process.  They burned her alive on May 30th, 1431.  Fifteen years later, the Church was called to reexamine the case, this time with the pope involved, and her conviction was overturned.  Of course, that didn’t overturn her death, but she was eventually made a saint, so that’s pretty neat.  Anyway, with Ascension Thursday AND the anniversary of her execution being so close this year, I figured a Joan of Arc cartoon was long overdue.

A young girl is called by a noble voice into a life of hardship.  There, she disguises her femininity and faces bandits, strange voices, unworthy kings, enemy armies, inquisitors, imprisonment, despair, and betrayal.  Yet her journey is guided by something beyond this world, and through the whirling mists of uncertainty, she discovers her purpose, learns to trust in those dearest to her, and becomes a beacon of hope to her people.

JOKE-OGRAPHY:

This month’s wallpaper is based on the original “Mistborn” trilogy by Brandon Sanderson, which begins as a heist thriller set in a dark kingdom of magic and intrigue.  In this wallpaper, I’ve replaced the main character, Vin, with St. Joan of Arc, because both are girls who dress in boys’ clothes, both are single-minded warriors, and both try to change their home for the better by having a very physical say in its leadership.  I’ve replaced the story’s mentor and charming crew-leader, Kelsier, with St. Michael the Archangel, because both were a force of support and guidance to their respective charges, and both managed to turn seemingly lowly peasant girls onto the path of heroes.

AUTHOR’S NOTE:

There’s more I could share to explain the image, of course, but doing so just might spoil parts of the original “Mistborn” trilogy, which I wouldn’t want to do when it’s so worth reading.  I only just finished it this month, but it’s easily one of my favorite series of all time.  It’s not for everyone, but it’s got oodles of dark fantasy, a fascinating magic system, engaging mysteries with amazing twists and pay-offs, and poignant points about leadership, trust, and faith.  If any or all of that sounds swell to you, give it a read (or a listen if you like audiobooks; Michael Kramer’s narration is wonderful), or if you’ve already read it, let me know what you thought (without any spoilers, just in case)!

Why make God do all the work?

JOKE-OGRAPHY:
In these verses, Paul is explaining that life is full of hardships, and those who suffer them nobly will find God, even in the darkness of life’s worst moments.  In this cartoon, the way that he phrases this message leads one engineering mind to believe that it’s the hardships themselves that draw us closer to God, rather than how we deal with them or what we learn from them.  Hence, he builds an obstacle course that doesn’t adhere to particularly strict safety regulations to maximize hardships, expecting it to help people get to heaven faster.  He is technically correct.

Some say that this Robin Hood of saints returns to the mortal realm even to this day to snatch socks from the dryers of sinners!

JOKE-OGRAPHY:
According to stories about her childhood, St. Catherine (or Caterina) sometimes took her siblings’ things to give to charity.  In this cartoon, she justifies her behavior by citing a verse from Thessalonians, which warns that Jesus will return like a thief in the night.  The verse implies that Jesus may return when people don’t expect Him, though Catherine reads it more as inspiration than warning.

Basically.

JOKE-OGRAPHY:
Jesus arrives too late to heal His old friend Lazarus’s illness, much to the dismay of Martha, his sister.  Jesus tells her that Lazarus will be raised from the dead, so it’ll basically be as though he had never died.  Martha gets hung up on semantics, as someone notoriously distracted by busywork and details.
