Danse nègre è il quarto movimento dell'opera African Suite diSamuel Coleridge-Taylor (da non confondere col poeta inglese Samuel Taylor Coleridge), un compositore afro-britannico discendente di ex schiavi che fecero ritorno in Africa (Sierra Leone) dagli Stati Uniti.

Come il suo “capostipite” Joseph Boulogne Chevalier de Saint-George (compositore nero del 18esimo secolo), anche Coleridge-Taylor venne definito la Black version di _______ (metterci nome del compositore bianco loro contemporaneo). Nel caso di Chevalier si trattò di Mozart (peccato che Chevalier nacque prima) e nel caso di Colerige-Taylor fu Mahler.

Oggi diremmo che Colerige-Taylor fu un artista conscious, woke: fu infatti il più giovane delegato della prima conferenza panafricana, tenutasi a Londra nel 1900. (Alla conferenza c'era anche W.E.B. Du Bois…ma quella è un'altra storia.)

Where did the stereotype of classical music being boring and/or relaxing come from??

Like… have those people ever heard anything by Paganini? Bartok’s Piano Sonata?? The fucking Rite of Spring??? 

Is all classical music just Clair de Lune to these people?
