Good morning to everyone who is going to troll an oil company today

The goal of bullying Big Oil companies over their climate tweets isn’t just to educate people about corporate hypocrisy. It’s to unite activists around the goal of taking away their social license to operate.

Oil majors have admitted to investors that their business would be in deep trouble without broad public support. They’ve also admitted the biggest threat to maintaining social license is public anger over climate change.

Oil companies could remedy this threat by winding down their fossil fuel operations, and investing heavily in renewable energy. But for the most part, they’ve chosen to combat public anger over climate change by investing in strategic communication. This consistent choice of empty climate words over meaningful climate action is why several Shell executives quit the company this week—and it’s why Heglar says social media call-outs are increasingly powerful.

I often encounter climate change deniers in the work that I do, so I share these facts in the hopes that they will help you convince your skeptical friends that climate change is real. One of the best ways we can act on climate change is by bringing it up in conversations with friends and in school, to help people wrap their minds around this complex and continually growing issue.

The video starts off with a picture of “The Eye of Fire”, or where a fire opened up on the surface of the Gulf of Mexico.

There’s white text above it stating “the Gulf of Mexico is on fire because of a pipeline rupture wtf” with four question marks.

The video switches to a person.

“So we have to talk about Line 3, again. Line 3 is being illegally built through sovereign Indigenous territory.”

Behind them shows a map of said territory.

“Not only this but it (Line 3) has the possibility to pollute over 200 bodies of fresh water and will put out the same amount of emissions as 50 coal plants”

The screenshot at the back says: “It’s the spills — which always happen with pipelines. It’s the disruption itself of just the pipeline going into 800 wetlands, 200 bodies of water. Then there’s the climate change piece, emissions of this 50 coal plants, absolutely insanity,” a quote from attorney Tara Houska of Couchiching First Nation who is the founder of the advocacy organization Giniw Collective. This came from a interview with CNN in March.

“This violates Indigenous treaty,” the person says as another screenshot pops up.

It says, as a quote from Aubid, one of many Indigenous climate activists: “The Line 3 extension would also cross through the Leech Lake and Fond Du Lac reservations — land where, according to the terms of a 1855 treaty, Ojibwe tribes have the right to gather, hunt, and fish. For this reason, Anishinaabe activists say the pipeline violates the terms of the treaty.”

The article from MSN News continues: “What is spelled out in the treaty — the pipeline could pollute food sources, water sources, everything spelled out in the treaty what we as Anishinaabe people can do — hunt, fish, gather food, medicine. Line 3 goes against what we do spiritually as people,”

A picture of Indigenous activists with a couple of signs, one says “Honor our treaties, #StopLine3”.

“Currently Indigenous water protectors are being arrested,”

“We don’t have time to argue. The ocean is on fire. Entire towns are burning to the ground because of the climate crisis. Building another pipeline right now, especially when it’s going to bring more violence to Indigenous communities is only going to hurdle us faster towards climate disaster.”

A tweet that originally shows the same picture in the beginning from a verified account (Brian Kahn) that says “The Gulf of Mexico is literally on fire because of a pipeline rupture”, continues with another verified account (Dallas Goldtooth) retweeting it, “THIS IS WHY @.POTUS MUST STOP Line 3 — Shut down DAPL and end all climate-destroying fossil fuel projects”.

“If you don’t want this happening, in some of the only lakes in the country that provide us freshwater, during one of the biggest heatwaves of the century, then fight with Indigenous people against this pipeline. Against Line 3. Go to the site linked and sign the petition. Educate yourself. Tell others.”

The petition they were talking about is here: StopLine3

CLIMATE CHANGE:  Extreme Heat by 2070

This map depicts the areas of the world predicted to suffer from extreme heat from global warming by 2070. Humankind has lived and thrived in a moderate climate niche with a yearly average of 52 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit, but with carbon emissions continuing at projected rates, the geographical position of this climate niche will shift in the next 50 years. According to a study just released, some 3 billion people will live in areas of extreme heat by 2070 if trends continue unchecked. These brutally hot conditions currently only occur in 0.8% of the earth’s surface in the hottest parts of the Sahara Desert, but could expand to over 19% of earth’s landmass by 2070. This trend could lead to extreme climatological events and mass migrations.

the influence of us human

I would like to make a post to show how drastically we are changing our environment. This is my favorite place to photograph fog and wild meadows. Every year I come around here. For me it has always been a place of stability and peacefulness. I grew up there too in the near, which is why I’m very shocked how much this beautiful place has changed. I don’t want to teach anyone how much we have to change. I just want to show that the climate change is real and to give everyone something to think about.

The first picture is from summer 2016 and the second picture is from this summer 2021.

hope-for-the-planet:

Here are two simple things you can do right now to capitalize on the momentum generated by the IPCC report:

1. Call your representatives and tell them you want them to take aggressive action on climate change.

Better yet, show up in person at a public forum where you can voice your opinion. Other forms of communication are definitely still good (I totally understand that cold calls are anxiety-inducing for many of us), but letters and especially emails are not nearly as impactful as phone calls.

Right now is an especially good time to do this. The IPCC report has freaked a lot of people out, which means more people contacting their representatives, and there is power in numbers. Get your friends and family in on the action too.

2. Tell other people in your life that you are afraid of climate change. No really.

One of the major obstacles towards climate action is that many people feel uncomfortable bringing up upsetting topics. This creates a situation where everyone thinks they are totally alone and no one else cares.

Humans are social creatures. We are more likely to ignore dangerous issues (literally there have been studies where people will ignore a room filling with smoke if everyone else in the room ignores it) if it seems like those around us aren’t worried.

Don’t talk about how hopeless it is and that we are all going to die.Be honest about your rational fear for the future and emphasize concrete ways that people can help be part of the solution (voting, calling their representatives, divesting, working on making your community more sustainable, etc).

Taking action is one of the best ways to counter environmental despair and climate anxiety. Don’t let anyone tell you that you are powerless or that you might as well give up; think about who benefits from prematurely giving up this fight.

I understand that not everyone is in a place to take these actions and that’s ok. Please take care of your mental health in this scary time and avoid doomscrolling; focus on things you can actually impact and don’t dwell on issues outside of your control. Take care of yourself; we need you!

Why did I decide to switch to safety razor?

Some time ago I decided to obtain a safety razor. For me the easiest way to buy it was online. So I chose a simple one with bamboo handle.

There are many advantages of switching to a safety razor:

  • It’s traditional and enjoyable.
  • It’sbetter shaving than while using disposable razor, also safety razor reduces skin irritation and ingrown hairs.
  • It’sless expensive. Disposable razor cost 1 to even 5$. I bought my safety razor with about 21$ and razors are really chip and fully recyclable. It’s very good way to save money.
  • I enjoy shaving with safety razor because of the attention I’m paying to it. It demands focus so it helps not to think about anything else. I’m taking careof myself and relaxing at the same time.
  • I’ve always had a problem with cutting myself while shaving, now while using safety razor I rarely do it.
  • Furthermoredisposable razors are not recyclable. According to the EPA 2 billions of them end up in landfills every year. Terrible, right?

To be honest I was surprised how easy is the safety razor in use and in fact it’s a lot easier to use that kind of razor. I was also impressed with that feeling after shaving when my skin felt smoother and softer than while using disposable razors!

I highly recommend it to people who don’t want to give up shaving but want to be more eco friendly.

By the way from my point of view it’s also a very good gift idea!

This is the waste I created using a safety razor for 14 months. Eight recyclable blades instead of about 30 disposable razors ;)

And I haven’t change my mind about that topic - I absolutely love my razor ;) Seriously, using it is easier than it seems!

What about you? Do you own a safety razor or look forward to obtain it? ;)

Even animals have the freedom to terminate a pregnancy when conditions aren’t compatible with survival and the specious argument that humans are separate from and superior to beasts is how we ended up in this global climate catastrophe so fuck off with that.
