Astonishing but true: The amount of food that is thrown away around the world every year could feed 800 million people

This short video from National Geographic explores how it is that we’re wasting so much food.

40% of food in the United States goes to waste — and incidents like this don’t help!

Sanitation Department workers in New York City threw out thousands of dollars worth of fresh produce earlier this month because it was obstructing the sidewalk.

This British company is turning food waste into beer

“We got a lesson in brewing as well as a lesson in using the bread for it,” says Michael Mulcahy, who helped tear up about 200 loaves of bread into chunks to make the amber ale he’s sipping. “Today, we get to taste what came out of it.”

there’s a big difference between “food waste” as in “farmers destroy tons of food to avoid exceeding quotas” or “supermarkets throw away this much edible food because it doesn’t sell”

and “food waste” as in “it is not actually within the capacity of humans to perfectly predict and track household food consumption, so a certain amount of food per household inevitably goes bad and has to be thrown out every year”

the idea that food waste is the product of thoughtless consumers rather than corporate greed is really insidious

Recently read “Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck. The fact that corporations still throw away so much perfectly good food is not only infuriating but down right evil. This book is still relevant nearly 100 years later.

Anew law in France bans supermarkets from throwing away or destroying unsold food. Instead, the food will be donated to food banks and charities.

This is great news for the climate, too. If food waste was its own country, it would be the 3rd largest contributor to greenhouse gases after China and the United States.

France is the first country in the world to instate such a ban. Hopefully other nations will follow suit.

supermarkets and restaurants throwing away perfectly fine food is so tragic. like there’s people out there starving
