April 1985, Concorde flies supersonic. This is the only picture ever taken of Concorde flying at Mach2, 1,350 mph. It was taken from a Royal Air Force Tornado, which rendezvoused with Concorde briefly to the south of Ireland.

I have to say I’m really impressed by the Air and Space museum. Opened in 2003, its two huge hangars — the Boeing Aviation Hangar and the James S. Perfect sunsets in Paris, it doesn’t get much better than this. 

The first Tupolev TU-144S at the Paris Air Show in 1973. The plane would crash the next day, killing 14, including eight spectators on the ground. The TU-144 was a Soviet supersonic passenger jet, a kind of communist Concorde (which actually debuted before the Concorde). They were used intermittently in the 1970s and then mostly shelved because of the expense of flying them – and several crashes.
