Started in 2020 by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer after having COVID-19 himself, this ongoing exhibition visualizes and memorializes the extraordinary loss caused by COVID-19.

During a time when distance and stillness halted public rituals of mourning, “A Crack in the Hourglass, An Ongoing COVID-19 Memorial” continues to provide a virtual and physical space to mourn loved ones lost to the pandemic.

In this participatory artwork, a modified robotic plotter deposits grains of hourglass sand onto a black surface to recreate the images of those lost due to COVID-19. After each portrait is completed, the surface tilts and the same sand is recycled into the next portrait, echoing the collective and ongoing nature of the pandemic.

[ 零 ]

昨天，香港錄得零個確診個案。 並且多日只有單位數輸入/本地個案增長。

自農曆年前起，香港人人心惶惶，不提政府措施、人民意識，世界各地多月來一直有一系列大爆發。 當中，英、美、意、法、西班牙進入失控的緊急狀態，醫療系統乘受不了突然其來的患者，人手裝備不夠也不在話下，我們亞洲國家更對英、美兩國未開始大爆發前的太極應對覺得莫名奇妙至極。 感覺就像讓它發生吧的對策，戴不戴囗罩成為東亞洲和西方國家的文化差異話提。

我最初都認為西方人不願意戴囗罩絕大原因是因為我們(本地人)已像瘋子一樣出入都絕不會除下，我住的地區更容易見到不單止外國人沒有戴囗罩，就連，操流利英語的黃皮膚人也一樣輕視了冠狀病毒。 其後我讀上一篇南華早報的文章提及囗罩這話提，這不單單是輕視與習慣的問題，反而更重要的是他們的自身尊嚴。 我也是個不喜歡戴口罩的人，除非公司有流感出現或自己有感冒徴狀，我非必要也不會戴，這次也因公民意識和本地專家的建議才安全地戴上，為人為已，務必保護香港。

深信現在居港的外國人望見家鄉成為嚴重疫區，每天的死亡數字，令他們明白到本地人的過份緊張瘋子般的樣子救了很多很多人命了。 香港仍然尚算生活正常運作中也是大家的功勞。 不要鬆懈的前提下，我們可以鼓勵一下，也幫助有需要的人，儘管是國外地區的地球村人民。

這段日子公司運作一切正常，只是分了兩隊分開上班，所以假日多了不少，我也把握機會在另一嗜好沖煮精品咖啡領域上學習了不少。 決意買入了一套一直想學會的虹吸器具，想了一段時間，只欠一個美好的藉口。 所以若說世界像是停了，不如去學一些(別人眼中的)無聊事，可能是一件小事，但就在此起步了來。

回想當年沙士的時候，我並不在香港，沒法親身了解當時的恐懼，新聞消息也沒有像現在的即時突發，一手消息大多從電視才會得知。 不談事後的經濟影響，只談社區爆發的震撼度，來不切吞下囗水的吃驚，因為太多未知的可能性，仼何人、任何地方都可能帶有病毒。 當年的一班醫護烈士也得到我尊重，回港後的其中一事就是到香港公園內的紀念像致敬，當年的傳染病學專家袁國勇、醫生沈祖堯等更成為香港的英雄。 

十七年後，又被引入了新冠肺炎，事實可怕的是在中國的感染和死亡數字在爆發期激增，封城的手段也前所未有地實行，一個又一個醫院爆棚和隔離無助的畫面可能我們以為都是配套、衞生做得不足而成，事實根本一切來得太急，紙包不住火。 意大利成了另一個武漢，分別的是他們不能十天內建成火神山，這一方面得到我的欣賞，當時我看著外媒主持報導也笑着質疑這可能性。 香港十分興幸有袁國勇在主持大局，政府可能慢幾拍，但市民帶有自救、自保的心態去看待疫情。 全球第一個去搶購口罩、防護物資的地方，其後也有另一波搶米、廁紙等等，恐慌全城。 很多自己也會笑的事，原來不只是在香港會發生，近至新加坡、遠至現在歐美也一樣，不竟我們也是人類，要生存，要生活。

很多公司實行了居家工作，我們公司就用上兩隊分日輪班，也因而多了一些工餘時間。 有到過郊外，不過始終不太放心沒防護裝備下進行;  亦遊訪了好幾間之前沒有動力驅使我到的咖啡店，這段時期還可以自由自在外出的確算是非常理想了。 香港能夠守住，全靠大家的齊心，我們所有人都是英雄。 壞的會過去，好的會來臨。

Day 30+87: When I was still a rookie reporter for ABS-CBN, one of the expressions I learned from police personnel in the crime beat was: “Ayaw gyud baliktari ug kaldero ang tao, kay di kabalo unsay himuon ana niya (Don’t ever flip someone’s rice cauldron over, because you never know what they’ll do), which was an admonition for employers who unjustly fire people from their jobs, causing them to commit deeds which landed them at the precinct.

Over the past weeks, stories about the network’s franchise, the stonewalling their bosses faced in the House of Representatives, and the continuous trolling their accounts and employees get on social media, have undoubtedly caused fear and anxieties on the 11,000 employees all over the country, and their families.
.
One might say that I am biased since I am a former employee. And yes I am. It it is not only because I support their call for a new franchise, but because none of the accusations hurled against it and its employees have been proven.
.
As the network reduces its work force in the coming months both due to the pandemic, and the possible non-renewal of the franchise, some would end up worrying about their families, their parents, their kids, and their futures. This would inevitably cause anxieties which may cause unpredictable actions. A persecuted community can only take and hold so much.
.
I hope that those in the halls of power, particularly those coming from Visayas and Mindanao, will remember the expression: Ayaw gyud baliktari ug kaldero ang tao, to which I will add, labaw na kung walay saktong hinungdan (especially when there’s no justification).
