As I say daily, “Bi is not binary” (thinking of making t-shirts and a banner at this point).

So grateful for the consistent advocacy of so many fellow non monosexual community members working hella hard to disprove a fallacy that murders bi, pan, fluid, queer (bi+) people by isolating them from each other and the full embrace of a 50 year old bisexual movement started by self described punks, freaks, and waaaaaay outside the binary box thinkers. How dare anyone try to redefine our identity against us.

I’ve decided to protest that wherever I go, wherever I be…sorry/not sorry, if that bothers you…

I’m bothered by the discussion around Amber Heard revolving around the notion that “bisexuality doesn’t justify violence”. Not because it’s untrue, but because it’s superficial.

The real issue here is that women are punished by patriarchy for being bisexual. That our bisexuality is perceived as such a threat to cishet masculinity that physical violence seems an appropriate response to it. That women’s bisexuality is a punishable crime.

This whole discussion demonstrates the power dynamics around women’s bisexuality and the depth of sapphobia (misogyny against bi women) in society. The terms of the discussion should move beyond apologetics (i.e. we don’t deserve this) and into in-depth explorations of why this violence is perceived as acceptable.

Dear #LGBTQ leaders @ #WomensMarch,

Please remember to include #Bisexual+ when you talk about #Queer community. It matters.

Thank you.
Sara Ramirez

Note: There has been much debate within the main organizing committee Women’s March deciding on wording, who was explicitly included, etc. At first it was Lesbians, then Lesbian and Queer, then went to LGTQ+(without the B), and so on and so forth.  When politely asked to also remember and include Bi+ Women (x) (x) (x) etc, for whatever reason the organizers then chose to move to Queer only, rather than to also just #SayBisexual.

[Update: after much outcry currently it’s now been changed to LGBTQIA, the wording on this & some other issues(ieTrans inclusion vs TERF, Sex-workers rights via anti’s, Bisexual+ people vs monosexual, etc.) has been contentious and changing quickly, so it’s been difficult to keep up … so if it is changed again no disrespect or attempts to be deceptive or inaccurate meant]

Sadly a great deal of the problem is that (as usual) no one reached back, when representitives of the bisexual+ community reached out to Women’s March to try to participate.  It’s a constant problem. Even well meaning would be/should be“allies” (1) assume that Some Gay Group will “take care of you people” or (2) it never occurs to (some #NotAll) people that bi+ people are active and organized, except for maybe swingers clubs or hook-up apps.

While it sounds like a joke, it’s a real long-running issue and causes no end of trouble.  And so far no one has come up with a way to correct it.

Hi y’all! So, I’ve had a blast running this blog for the last year and a half, but unfortunately my life is making a lot of (exciting!!) changes, meaning I can no longer dedicate the time necessary to keep this blog running at it’s previous quality.

I decided, instead of just letting it die, to open up mod applications. If no one applies, or there are no applicants I feel will keep this a safe, positive space for all sapphic women, then the blog will be archived and that is that. However, maybe you (yes, you!) can keep this blog alive, and possibly turn it into something even better than before!

Some ground rules before you apply, that extend beyond simply making graphics and adding them to the queue:

  • Acknowledge this is first a foremost a positive space. You may get “discoursey” asks. You need to delete them. You will also get a plethora of homophobic, biphobic asks, including from straight people. You need to delete them. There are other blogs for that kind of content, this is not one of them. Exceptions are if you once and a while make a joke about a ridiculous ask, or if you think there’s an opportunity for a teaching moment (some examples here)
  • Acknowledge this is a safe space for ALL sapphic women. This include trans and nonbinary sapphic women. Aromantic and asexual sapphic women. Sapphic women of color. All lbpq women. If you feel you cannot do this, please do not apply.
  • Acknowledge that this is a space where all women who love women are the same. I am aware that there are differences between bi women, and lesbians and the like. There are blogs to discuss those differences but this is not one of them. Finding female characters that are into other ladies is so rare and difficult already, and this was created to be a blog that didn’t focus on these women’s individual identities, but on their love of women overall! Keep it as a friendly, useful, and unifyingplace!
  • BE NICE. You will get asks that seem silly, that seem repetitive. But especially if that ask comes from another sapphic woman and it’s not malicious, respond respectfully and with kindness.

Here is a link to the application, which includes creating a blog image using the provided template, as well as other things. Even if you don’t think you’re interested, spreading the word would be lovely! I don’t want to see this blog fall to the wayside. Thanks <3
