Her name is Assa Traoré and she’s Adama Traoré’s sister.

Adama was killed 4 years ago on his 24th birthday by the police in 2016; Assa decided to fight for her brother and not let this crime be an “accident” or be part of the local news, for 4 years she kept fighting for her brother and for the black community. Her voice will not be stifled and we will keep shouting Adama’s name until justice is done.

Some space age reading material. A brilliant & colourful cover depicting the passion of the space race between the USA & USSR courtesy Time Magazine, Dec 6, 1968. Later that month, NASA would win the race to a crewed lunar orbit via Apollo 8 & astronauts James Lovell, Frank Borman & William Anders. Such an exciting decade of historic firsts.

ryanpfluger: I’m always trying to find the quiet. The in-between, the slightly awkward and the meditative in my work. That can be hard sometimes with celebs but also super rewarding when it clicks. This shoot with @chrisevans was my last shoot for TIME right before the pandemic and it’s still one of my faves. Lots of new stuff to share soon. Have a great weekend everyone.

JOAKIM ESKILDSEN: AMERICAN REALITIES

Galerie Polka presents American Realities by Danish photographer Joakim Eskildsen (born in 1971 in Copenhagen).

“One in every six Americans lived below the official U.S. poverty line when Kira Pollack, Director of Photography at TIME Magazine, commissioned me to capture the growing crisis. During thirty-six days spread over seven months in 2011, and mostly accompanied by reporter Natasha del Toro, I traveled through New York, California, Louisiana, South Dakota and Georgia, visiting places that according to census data have the highest poverty rate.

The approximately 50 million poor Americans are a heterogeneous population from very varying backgrounds. Some are newly poor, some are immigrants who have come from humble conditions, dreaming of the American possibilities. Of course, U.S. poverty differs from poverty in developing countries. People living below the poverty line can have physical goods, even work but they are mired in debt, many homes are in foreclosure, and most often, being poor also implies having to resort to the cheapest, most unhealthy and risky lifestyle. Any unexpected occurrence may jeopardize the fragile system and find people living on the streets.

(…) The myth of the American Dream is very strong in the U.S., and it seems people are disillusioned with the fact that it is so difficult to get by today. They said there is no American Dream anymore. This, they said, was the American Reality.”

Born in London, Isabella Blow first became interested in fashion after falling in love with her mother’s pink hat. How fitting, then, that she would become famous decades later for discovering the then unknown milliner Philip Treacy. She wore his hats in most public appearances throughout the rest of her life. Blow went on to discover and promote models Sophie Dahl and Stella Tennant and, most famously, the late designer Alexander McQueen, whose entire graduation collection she purchased for about $8,000. Beyond serving as a mentor and muse for young talent, Blow worked as an editor at publications including Tatler, the Sunday Times and U.S. Vogue, where she briefly assisted Anna Wintour. But for all of her professional success, she battled depression throughout her life and committed suicide in 2007 while battling ovarian cancer. She was buried in a McQueen outfit, while Treacy designed a hat that rested on her coffin.

In 1999, TIME named Anne Frank one of the most important people of the 20th century. Little did this Jewish teen who dreamed of becoming a writer know that her private diary would touch the lives of millions all over the world. This push girl lived in extraordinary times but still managed to retain her belief that people had the capacity to do good, noting: “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”

Tell your friend she’s got a little Anne Frank in her. Reblog now to give her a little push.
