Ella the Gorilla is Out on Amazon (and Kindle)

When Rama Alshareef and Mawya Alfadda contacted me to illustrate a children’s book on science, I was not super fascinated. I didn’t think the story, any science-oriented story, would be fun. Also, with a gorilla and a bee as protagonists, I did not want to tackle the scale problem. The young writers had a dream, but they didn’t have the vision. They were not ready at the time. So I asked them to work on a detailed briefing which they shared a month later. When I read it, I jumped in without a second thought.

Why? I’ll tell you in future blog posts . I’ll write about the creative process, character design, thumbnail sketches, color design, the actual painting process and the different methods I followed, and I’ll tell you also about the visual storytelling approaches I adapted working on the scenes: how I thought about composition, perspective, visual effects, the use of blur, hiding in the story, appeal, relatability, the passage of time, mood, and other concepts that I really enjoyed playing with consciously as I worked on the book.

An illustration for Ella the Gorilla, a children's book about science. We see Ella in her pink-ish room with her friends, Chuck the duck and Lee the bee. They are at the rainbow outside.

Another artwork for Ella the Gorilla, a children’s book I’ve illustrated recently.

The room was built around the character of the protagonist, a she gorilla who loves science.

The details on this page include, amongst what the include, my car plate’s number!

I painted this personalized digital cartoon portrait for a client from the United States.

During the process I got to know each member of the family better (their expressions, gestures, hobbies, likes and dislikes, eye color, …), one stroke at a time.

This is a large-canvas, high-DPI painting which my patron printed on a 60x60 cm canvas (Giclee print) and is now, as I’m writing these lines, looking for a place to hang it!

This digital painting is inspired, sadly, by the explosion which hit Beirut on 4 August and, proudly, by the Beirutis and their resilience.

The Terminal | Narrative Digital Painting | by Alhyari

When his pouch was run through the X-ray scanner, a bottle of frozen liquid was shouting for attention. Since the flight was not due before 2 hours, he was calm when he untied the knot for the alert officials in black uniforms. They inspected the olive oil bottle carefully, knocked on the eggs he separated in socks one by one and argued if the sound was natural, and they seized one Kilogram of grape leaves stuffed with rice, that was all his supply.

On the look for a quiet corner to wait until his flight was called, he was reflecting about life. Two things crossed his mind, but I’m not entitled to share them. The place, though bursting with infinite vistas of exploration, was narrow and dark. He just wanted to leave it behind, to get as far away from it as he could.

The first black girl to ever attend an all-white school in the United States was Dorothy Count. This sketch was inspired by a famous photo of her being mocked and taunted by her peers at Charlotte’s Harry Harding’s School in 1957.
