Book Review: Rediscovery: Science Fiction by Women Volume 2 (1953-1957)

Book Review: Rediscovery: Science Fiction by Women Volume 2 (1953-1957) edited by Gideon Marcus

As the introduction by Janice L. Newman points out, women have written science fiction all along. The percentage of them getting published at any given time in the magazines and books waxed and waned, but they were always there. In the period of the 1950s covered in this volume, they averaged about 1…

NOVEMBER 26 - SARAH JOSEPHA HALE

If you’re off from work for Thanksgiving today, then you might want to express your gratitude for Sarah Josepha Hale. Beginning as far back as 1827, the writer and women’s magazine editor tirelessly campaigned to make Thanksgiving a national holiday in the United States.

“The last Thursday in November – shall it be THE DAY?”shewrote in a 1853 editorial. “If the State Governors will this year unite on this day, there is little doubt but a precedent will be established, and become a fixed custom forevermore.”

Hale’s efforts were dismissed by four US presidents in a row. It wasn’t until 1863 that Abraham Lincoln supported legislation for the cause, thereby putting an end to over three decades of advocating for the change. Thanksgiving joined Washington’s Birthday and Independence Day as the third national holiday in US history.

Beyond this initiative, Hale is also known as the author of the popular children’s nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb”, and her fundraising efforts were essential for the completion of the long-delayed Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown, Massachusetts. Through asking her readers to donate and organizing a week-long craft fair at the Quincy Market, she raised a total of $30,000 to help finish the project.

Hale’s politics were, at times, quite shaky by modern standards. She pushed for women’s education and the entrance of women into the workforce, yet she opposed women’s suffrage in favor of the “secret, silent influence” women could have on male voters. She was an adamant opponent of slavery, yet one of her novels suggested that all freed slaves should be relocated to Liberia.

Alas, in her time, Hale’s views were seen as progressive. While her track record isn’t perfect - and some might say she reinforced certain stereotypical gender roles regarding domesticity - she was a pioneer for women in the literary world and helped push forward the careers of other female writers.

And while Thanksgiving itself may not be a perfect holiday - with roots that link back to the massacre of Native Americans - there are, indeed, some positive traditions that have endured beyond the holiday’s problematic history. Regardless of her original intentions, Hale has given us a day to focus on the importance of family, charity and personal reflection.

DECEMBER 30 - IDA B. WELLS

The oldest of eight children, Ida B. Wells was born in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Her parents, who were very active in the Republican Party during Reconstruction, died in a yellow fever epidemic in the late 1870s. Wells attended Rust College and then became a teacher in Memphis, Tennessee.

Shortly after she arrived, Wells was involved in an altercation with a white conductor while riding the railroad. She had purchased a first-class ticket, and was seated in the ladies car when the conductor ordered her to sit in the Jim Crow (i.e. black) section, which did not offer first-class accommodations. She refused and when the conductor tried to remove her, she “fastened her teeth on the back of his hand.” Wells was ejected from the train, and she sued. She won her case in a lower court, but the decision was reversed in an appeals court.

While living in Memphis, Wells became a co-owner and editor of a local black newspaper called The Free Speech and Headlight. Writing her editorials under the pseudonym “Iola,” she condemned violence against blacks, disfranchisement, poor schools, and the failure of black people to fight for their rights. She was fired from her teaching job and became a full-time journalist.

In 1892, Tom Moss, a respected black store owner and friend of Barnett, was lynched, along with two of his friends, after defending his store against an attack by whites. Wells, outraged, attacked the evils of lynching in her newspaper; she also encouraged the black residents of Memphis to leave town. When Wells was out of town, her newspaper was destroyed by a mob and she was warned not to return to Memphis because her life was in danger. Wells took her anti-lynching campaign to England and was well received.

Wells wrote many pamphlets exposing white violence and lynching and defending black victims.  In 1895 she married Ferdinand Barnett, a prominent Chicago attorney. The following year she helped organize the National Association of Colored Women. She was opposed to the policy of accommodation advocated by Booker T. Washington and had personal, if not ideological, difficulties with W.E.B. Du Bois.  In 1909, she helped found the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Wells-Barnett continued her fight for black civil and political rights and an end to lynching until shortly before she died.

WOMEN IN PRODUCTION | Editor | Thelma Schoonmaker

In all of the production team, editors are the ones that truly mold the film into its final form. They set the pacing, the musicality, and choose the best performances among countless other duties. One of the most prolific film editors in the business is Thelma Schoonmaker, who has famously worked with Martin Scorcese for over two decades and has won two Academy Awards for The Aviator and Raging Bull. From their interviews and collaboration, it is clear that there is a great deal of trust between the two and that Schoonmaker is a force to be reckoned with in the editing room.

The Architect, Taylor Swift - album concept

The Architect is Taylor Swift’s 10th studio album. After the two sister albums she released in 2020, folklore and evermore, Swift decides to go back to pop music, with a 70s and a bit rock sound. It sounds like a mixture of Red and Lover.  It features a collaboration with her long time friend Selena Gomez.
