Hey do you want to start making your books into real life books that look really nice? And getting smarter about comics? If you have a bunch of free time this summer and you’re going to be in NYC, then PEOW (more specifically Peow boss Patrick) and some secret guests will be teaching a class on comic production, at SVA’s risoLab. We are still really excited to be teaching this class, because, coming all the way from Sweden to share all the stuff we learned at Peow is a magic thing! The pics above are work that last seasons students made (last season, we had the pleasure of co-teaching with @krismukai, who also has made a lot of nice course material for the class)! So cool!

It’s a 10 week class and you can make as many comics and prints as you have time to make (you’ll also have access to the risographs on your free time) and level up so many levels in printing and book design, and its like 645 dollars. Look look here!!

Just came back home from a two weeks staying at Le Dernier Cri in Marseille! It has been an immense pleasure and honour to work with the same people who influenced so deeply my art style, and I was not disappointed in finding in reality the same passion and sincere attitude that has informed their publications for such a long time… coupled of course with master skills in silkscreen printing process! As a result we produced a small but substantial collection of my past works, both comics and illustration, as a 32 pages limited edition silkscreen book simply called “SAFE SPACE” (or SAFE SPACE # 0 for long-term fan) which will be soon available for purchase both from me and Le Dernier Cri web shop. Stay tuned!

Words have power.

I come from a background where so many people have wandered in and out of my life, speaking to, at, over, and into me and my journey. Some negative and some positive. Some curses and some blessings. Some false and some true. I really struggled with comprehension and gaining a proper understanding of their impact. It wasn’t until I listened to the small whisper and discovered my own narrative, that I was able to “chew the meat and spit out the bones” of what occurred in the past and come out of it a better person.

So, cheers to the struggle, the discoveries, and the journeys this life has brought me. I am proud of myself because I did everything everyone said I never could. I became everything I’m not to truly become everything I am and will become…Now, I can add self taught “Writer, Poet, & Author” to my resume. Except, this isn’t just what I do but, a part of who I am. This dream is now a reality. I have seen something spiritual become physical and manifest it’s blessings to those around me.

My first poetry collection - ETHEREAL LOVE by Kid Gills - coming really soon.

Self-Publishing Thoughts #4: ISBNs

Hey folks- this one is going to be pretty geared towards US authors. Apologies.

Today we’re going to talk about ISBNs!

What are ISBNs?

It is a unique, 13-digit numerical identifier for your book. When publishing, you’re going to need a unique ISBN for each version of your book (ex.- e-book vs paperback vs hardback vs audiobook). Translated versions and new editions also require new ISBNs.

For an example of what an ISBN looks like, check the copyright page of a book. They’ll usually be listed there.

Why do I need an ISBN?

In summary, if you want people to buy it, you’ll need it. Publishers, booksellers, libraries, internet retailers and other supply chain participants use it for ordering, listing, sales records, etc. For more info, visit here.

But I’ve heard e-books don’t require ISBNs?

Technically, you don’t need an ISBN to sell an e-book, particularly if you’re only selling through Kindle. But if you want to distribute wide (aka more than one retailer), you should assign a ISBN to your e-book as well. Here’s a more detailed breakdown of why.

But Amazon/Ingram Spark/B&N said they’d provide me an ISBN! Do I really need to buy one?

You could use their ISBN, sure. But they control that number, not you- and at the end of the day, the more you control about your publishing process, the better. In short, it’s recommended you use your own ISBN.

Where do I get an ISBN?

In short: Bowker. That’s the only place to buy ISBNs in the US. I recommend buying a bundle, even though it’s pricey.

⭐ Note: do not buy barcodes from Bowker. You can generate those for free elsewhere. My cover designer actually generated one for me. You do not need to have your price on your barcode if you anticipate changing your price for events and such.

What do I do with my ISBN?

A few things!

Before you publish, you’ll need to assign an ISBN to your book. Here’s a handy guide on how to fill out the info for an e-book and a paperback.

⭐ Note: You’ll need to have the final title of your book before assigning your ISBN.

Once you’ve assigned the info and your ISBN has been approved, you should add it to your copyright page. You can list all of your ISBNs on the page (you don’t have to maintain a separate copyright page for each version of your book).

For someone who has typed upwards of 200,000 words for their novel, taken advanced English all their life, has a family of multigenerational English teachers, and has a formidable library in their room, I sure can’t spell worth a damn.

I spent a length of time I will not disclose cursing spell-check, more confident than I had any right to be that “paid” was actually spelled “payed.”

Tax Tips for Freelance Writers and Self-Published Authors

If you earn money selling your words to websites and other publishers, the Internal Revenue Service will likely say you’re a small business owner. Freelance income is self-employment income, and so are any royalties you receive for that book you published or self-published. That can be a good thing, because the self-employed are privy to some tax perks that employees don’t usually receive. To learn more, see the full TurboTax article.

To be honest, I don’t think anyone will ever need or use the table of contents I add into my Heralds of Rhimn books, but I put them in anyway to flex angrily on the way that tables of contents have started to disappear from even books that could benefit from them. It’s just good design practice.

Same goes for the glossary and translations, except that my readers might actually find those useful. Or at least interesting!
