You were absolutely no where to be found. The pack had searched every hiding spot they could possibly find and nothing. Where could you have gone?

Your father - Sam Uley - paced around the kitchen anxiously. Your mom - Emily - watched him from her spot from the door. She was biting her nails, equally as nervous as your dad.

Embry sat at the table with the rest of the boys. His teeth were digging into his knuckle as his leg bounced up and down underneath the table. His eyes darted from Sam to Emily.

You were Embry’s imprint. The two of you hadn’t planned on telling your parents right away but that changed when you disappeared. Embry had accidentally let it slip.

Sam was not happy, to say the least. But now was not the time to scold Embry - it was time to find his daughter.

Honestly where could you have gone? You were sixteen years old and didn’t have your license yet. It wasn’t like you could go far.

Embry could feel his patience thinning. You always told him where you went. Just as he was about to explode, the front door swung open.

You walked in with bags in your hands and sunglasses covering your eyes. You stopped short at all the eyes on you and lowered your sunglasses. A nervous laugh escaped your mouth and you waved, “hi guys?”

“Where have you been?” Your father asked immediately.

You frowned at him, “I went to the mall with f/n.”

“And you didn’t bother telling anyone?”

“I did?” You answered. When he raised an eyebrow, you pushed past him and walked to the fridge. You pointed at the slip of paper in the middle of the door, “I wrote a note?”

No one said anything. Your father uncrossed his arms and opened his mouth before closing it again. He gave a short nod and then turned to the pack, “everyone out.”

Embry slowly stood from his seat, attempting to escape the house, “not you, Embry.”

You pursed your lips, assuming that your dad had finally found out. You moved over to Embry’s side, avoiding his eyes. Your dad stared at you intensely, but you didn’t look away.

“When were you going to tell me that you imprinted on my daughter?” Sam finally broke eye contact to glare down at Embry. The boy seemed to shrink under his sight.

“We wanted to wait a little longer,” you answered for your boyfriend, “but I don’t think it was the best idea now.”

“It wasn’t,” your dad spoke. He shook his head, “you should’ve told me right away.”

“Sorry,” both you and Embry answered together.

Your father eyed both of you before sighing and walking out of the room. Your mom sent you an apologetic look before heading after Sam.

You sighed and turned to Embry, who immediately wrapped you in a hug, “you had me so worried. Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I technically did,” you laughed, hugging him tighter, “you guys just didn’t read the note.”

He chuckled against your neck, “I guess not. I’m just glad you’re okay.”

(Y/N)’s POV

Life could be boring if you have nothing in particular to do. It may have been about a month and a half since I left Forks, but I had already seen and done so many things around Greece, and I was just bored at that point. I was bored out of my mind. I was used to the illusions I created to hide my identity, but, apart from that, nothing else really happened.

I estimated that there were still about two weeks left until Bella and Edward’s wedding, but I still didn’t feel comfortable or stable enough to go back. I missed the Cullens - they were the only family I was left with, but I didn’t want to step foot in the Forks area yet. I didn’t know how comfortable Embry or the pack would be with my presence in the area, so I didn’t want to risk it.

Yet, I still longed and yearned to have someone by my side; someone to call family. I didn’t mean someone to ‘replace’ Embry; I just wanted someone to actually treat me like a family. I had been living alone for too long, and, once I decided to stay with the Cullens, and then when I found Embry and the pack, I became so used and accustomed to the others’ presence around me, that I still craved for such a connection.

I started searching through endless numbers of files, archives, and whatnot, in an effort to find if I had any family left - hopefully, one of my brothers’ grandchild or great-grandchild. I even went to private investigators, hoping they will take some slack off my hands, and hopefully find the answers I was looking for.

Thinking about it, bringing a few bars of gold, in a small bag, with me was a clever idea - though I didn’t feel like connecting directly with humans, I still needed to interact with the human world, and monetary transactions were also included. I paid the investigators good money, hoping to find something.

Within a week, I had my answers. Most of my brothers’ descendants either died through the wars or moved away, out of the country. However, there was still one of them who was still living here and was closer to my physical age than the others.

Kyveli was born in 1980, in Thessaloniki, making her 31 years old now. Her full name was Kyveli Nikolaidou, which was different from our original family name. She had studied medicine at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, though she had many opportunities and offers to study outside of Greece, due to her high academic records and extracurricular activities.

I was proud that there was at least someone from our family who had a successful life back home. I heard the country was going through some difficult times, but, at least, Kyveli was following her dreams and trying to make something good of herself. She was probably living a happy human life, in contrast to my own miserable vampire one.

Finding her was a bit difficult. There was no steady home address, as she seemed to have been traveling a lot after her specialization, not staying in one particular city for more than 4 or 5 months. That was a bit suspicious to me, but I didn’t really question it - I was one to travel a lot after my transformation. I could only assume that humans were just as curious about the world around them, if not more.

It took me about a week or so to finally locate her. She was living on her own, in a small beach house, in Sithonia, Chalkidiki. The area was not as crowded as Kassandra was, but there were still many tourists and people living around. It was, overall, a pretty nice place - kind of sunny, secluded but also busy.

I was curious to see my great-great-great-grandniece and see how she turned out. I wouldn’t tell her the truth about me, of course - I couldn’t. No human could know about our existence, even if they were family. It was in their best interest to not know because knowing could put someone in terrible danger. I thought I’d tell her that I was a descendant of her long-lost aunt, not that I was actually her. Yeah, that was it. That was the only thing I would tell her.

I hadn’t been this nervous since the last time I met up with Embry, and that didn’t go well, so I was worried about how that would go. I rented a small car from Thessaloniki, deciding to drive through the idyllic scenery, trying to decide what I would tell Kyveli when I saw her.

She would probably ask me where my family and I had been all these years; why nobody tried to search for their relatives; what we did for a living, and such. I was worried about blowing up my cover; I hadn’t interacted with humans - who didn’t know about the supernatural - for so long. What if I messed everything up? I didn’t want to put Kyveli in danger; I didn’t want the Volturi to find out that she somehow knew; I didn’t want them to find me.

Driving through the curvy roads was easy. Meeting Kyveli seemed impossible. Yet, when I arrived at her house, I gathered up all the courage that was left in me, in a final attempt to reconnect with my family. Her house was beautifully painted in white paint, with orange-brown roof tiles. It was standing in front of a huge backyard and overlooked the peaceful turquoise waters. It was definitely the perfect place for anyone who wanted to find peace and quiet, and I could easily stay in a place like this.

I took a deep breath as I walked out of the car, hidden behind the illusion of a regular human. I took the few steps that separated me and Kyveli’s house, with uncertainty and slight fear of the unknown. As I walked up the stairs to her front door, I was hit by a really distinct smell that certainly did not belong to a human, and I was immediately put into thought.

Before I even got the chance to knock on the door, it opened wide, and a young woman was now staring at me with bright red eyes, smiling widely.

“Hello, I’m Kyveli. How may I assist you?”

Embry’s POV

I didn’t want to be here. If it was up to me, I wouldn’t be here. But I had promised Jacob that I’d be present at Bella and Edward’s wedding, as he had promised he would be their best man. Thankfully, Quil tagged along, but he refused to bring Claire with him - he was worried about the vampires around, and he didn’t want to risk it with his imprint’s life. Along with us came Seth, who, from all the wolves in the pack, had the best relationship with the Cullens, as well as Billy and Sue, who both accompanied Charlie, Jacob, and Seth.

As we all waited for Charlie to walk Bella down the aisle, I couldn’t help myself from taking a look around the fully-decorated Cullen backyard. Drenched in white flower garlands and assortments, it seemed too much for my own tastes - certainly Alice’s masterpiece. (Y/N) had mentioned plenty of times how obsessed with fashion, beauty, and everything glittery and magical the brunette Cullen girl was, and how she always loved that about Alice.

Unconsciously, I thought about the papers I found in (Y/N)’s study room - the ones that said we were married. I, personally, always thought of a beach wedding at La Push, when I was meant to find my imprint, surrounded by family and friends, though I didn’t think it would be possible now. Nevertheless, I continued watching around the small cliques of people chatting about everything and anything.

I caught a group of four people, who I recognized as Bella and Edward’s old Forks High School classmates, looking around and gossiping. The girl with the caramel brunette hair thought that the reason Bella and Edward were getting married was that she was pregnant. I chuckled at that; a human getting pregnant by a vampire’s baby would be impossible. The darker-haired girl agreed that she wasn’t, but the other girl was not convinced at all.

Finally, we were asked to take our seats, and as light music started playing, we started seeing Bella walking slowly and nervously towards the aisle. I could hear her heart pounding in her chest, the shallow breaths she took, her uncertain steps, and her fingers grabbing onto Charlie’s suit, afraid of what may happen if she let go.

However, the moment she raised her eyes and looked at Edward, who stood at the end of the aisle, every fear, stress, and doubt she may have had, seemed to wash off instantly, and she continued walking down the aisle with new-found confidence.

I couldn’t help but think about (Y/N) being in Bella’s position, and me being in Edward’s, about to get married. She would look so beautiful, whatever she chose to wear. Just looking at her beautiful, gold eyes and her glowing-from-happiness face as she would walk down the aisle to meet me at the other end. Just holding each others’ hands as we recited our vows and declared our eternal love for each other. Just kissing each other on the lips, sealing our promise for the endless life we had ahead of us, in front of our friends.

I felt a pinch in my heart, realizing that none of this would happen. Without clearly stating it, we both chose to stay away from each other, and I didn’t know if I would ever have the chance to actually see her again, let alone get married. The clapping and cheering around me brought me back to reality, and I clapped unwillingly, along with the rest.

Thankfully, the ceremony ended quickly, and we were once again starting to scatter around the floor. Light music played around to entertain guests before the couple’s dance, and Seth dragged Quil and me along with him and Billy, to wish Bella and Edward who were now chatting with Jacob. Jacob seemed happy for these two, and, though I didn’t know if he was genuine, I wondered how long it would take me to get used to the idea of (Y/N) living away from me, or her being with someone else.

“Hey, man. Nice to see you. I’m happy for you.” Seth smiled widely, shaking Edward’s hand.

“Thank you.” The vampire smiled back at him.

“I hope you’ll be happy, Bella. Congratulations, both of you.” Billy smiled warmly.

“Thank you, Billy.” Bella was glowing, happy by her groom’s side.

“Congrats. We’re happy for you.” Quil wished the couple.

“Thank you, Quil. We’re happy to see you here.” Edward replied.

“Hey, congrats. I’m happy for the two of you, honestly.”

“Thank you, Embry. And I’m sorry for everything that happened between us these past couple of months.” Edward looked at me apologetically, reminiscing about the anger we had at each other.

“I’m sorry, too. I didn’t mean for any of this to happen. Have you, by any chance, talked to her?” I had trouble talking when it came to my imprint.

“I’m sorry, man. We know as much as you do.” He looked saddened. I knew I wasn’t the only one affected by (Y/N)’s absence, though I was the only one who felt physical pain due to it.

“It’s okay, man. There’s nothing you could have done, anyway.” I tried smiling just a bit but failed.

“I just hope she comes back soon.” Edward tried to give me hope, touching my shoulder compassionately. I didn’t want to ruin his happiness.

“I do, too. We’ll just go now. Let you enjoy the rest of the night.” I smiled one last time before I left to get something to eat and drink.

Seth, Quil, Billy, and Jacob started talking about their own things, but I didn’t pay too much attention to what they were saying. Everyone and everything here celebrated love, but I wasn’t feeling the vibe. Nothing could take my mind off of (Y/N), not even my friends.

Suddenly, I noticed Seth, Quil, Jacob, and Billy had turned their heads around, looking toward Bella, Edward, and the Denali leeches. We were met with a pair of angry gold eyes, belonging to one of the Cullens’ blonde cousins. What was her issue? What was she staring at?

‘Irina. Come meet Bella.’ The brunette woman called the angry leech.

‘I can’t do this.’ She replied instead.

‘You promised.’ Another blonde told the angry one. She sounded like they had this conversation before.

‘They invited four of them. Two of them killed Laurent. I can smell them. Their stink, on his dead body.’ We now knew who she had a problem with.

‘Irina, they’re our friends. Jacob is Bella’s best friend and our best man. Embry is (Y/N)’s mate.’ Edward tried to reason with her.

‘Edward, they killed Laurent, my mate.’

‘He tried to kill Bella.’

‘I don’t believe that. He wanted to be like us. To live in peace with humans. With me.’ The blonde leech believed in the lies of her ‘mate’, though we knew better. When we got to him, he reeked of human blood. That was far from ‘living in peace with humans’.

‘I’m sorry.’ It was the only thing Edward managed to say, before the leech walked away angrily, her family calling after her, as they left Edward and Bella’s side.

I was tired of this family drama and vendettas. It seemed as if there was constantly some sort of drama surrounding the Cullen family.

‘Well, what’s a wedding without some family drama?’ I didn’t know if he was talking to Bella, me, or both of us.

After that small ‘fiasco’, it was time for the speeches and proposals. Some of them, like Emmett’s and Charlie’s, made me laugh; others, like Renee’s and Jessica’s, made me uncomfortable. But Edward’s speech somehow managed to stick with me.

‘It’s an extraordinary thing to meet someone who you can bare your soul to. And who will accept you for who you are. I’ve been waiting, what seems like a very long time to get beyond what I am. And with Bella, I feel like I can finally begin. So I’d like to propose a toast to my beautiful bride. No measure of time with you will be long enough. But let’s start with forever.’

I didn’t know why it stuck with me. Probably because I imagined (Y/N) in Edward’s place, waiting so long to find a mate in her life, and when we found each other, we began to open up more, and be open and honest about our natures, and we felt like we could have a long future with each other - at least, that’s what I thought until I blew everything up with her.

After the speeches, everyone stood up to either dance or continue chatting with each other. I was once again in my own world, watching happy couples - mostly vampires - dancing around with their partners, making me jealous and longing for (Y/N)’s touch.

“Hey, man. Are you okay? Do you want to go home?” Quil touched my shoulder, looking concerned for me.

“I don’t know, Quil. I don’t want to ruin it for the others.” I was looking around while everyone was having fun, and I still felt like a fish out of water.

“You won’t. You don’t have to be happy, just because everyone else seems to be. You have the right to feel whatever you want. Come on, let’s go. I’ll drive you home.”

We didn’t have to exchange a word with Quil. I just nodded, and he knew I was grateful to have him as a friend, supporting me even through my worst moments. Without saying anything, I got into the passenger seat, in the car (Y/N) bought me, and we drove back to the reservation, away from everyone’s judgemental looks.

———————————————————-

It was a few days after the wedding that we found ourselves at the First Beach, having a picnic with the imprints, and playing soccer. Jacob, Seth, and I were sitting on a log, away from the others, not feeling like participating in their activities, while Evanthe, Kim, Claire, Rachel, and Emily were sitting on a blanket that was spread on the sand. Sam, Jared, Paul, Quil, and Leah were running between playing soccer or sitting with their imprints.

Jacob kept telling himself and everyone around him that he was okay with Edward and Bella’s wedding. But we knew better. Though he had accepted the wedding, Jacob still couldn’t get over the fact that his best friend wanted to be a leech so badly. He didn’t see the appeal - none of us did, honestly, but he was also worried about how Bella being a vampire would affect their friendship in the future. He knew, at least, that after her transformation, she would have to be declared ‘dead’, which would also be fitting in the vampires’ situation.

“Maybe they’ll say she was in a crash crash. Or tripped and fell off a cliff. Well, judging by how clumsy she had always been, it is way more believable than the car crash.” Jacob chuckled, but his laugh hid the pain he felt. “At least, I’ll get one thing out of it”. He started thinking about all the ways he could get rid of Edward, tearing his head, arms, and legs apart, before he was stopped by Sam who, like the others around the pack, saw the images in their heads, through the mind link.

“No, you won’t. Cullens are not a danger to the town or the tribe.” Sam must have finally realized that no matter what happened with the vampires intruding on the land, the Cullens - and (Y/N) - were not like them; they would never want to cause harm to the humans of the town or the reservation.

“Well, if what she said about their honeymoon is true, he’s either going to kill her or change her. And the treaty says…”

“I say, Jacob. I say.” Sam used his Alpha voice to impose his words through Jacob’s narrow mind, probably hoping that he will think about it twice.

“He’s right, you know. Bella made her decision, whether you like it or not. It was her choice to turn into a vampire, not Edward’s, or the Cullens’. She chose that for herself, and you should accept it and move on.” I mumbled, feeling anger rising slowly within me.

“Jake, you really think you could kill Bella if she comes back a vampire?” Seth asked innocently, but also slightly terrified at the prospect of Jacob killing Bella.

“I.. I don’t know, I really don’t. The Cullens may not be a ‘danger’ according to Sam, but they’re still vampires, still dangerous.”

“Why are you so obsessed with her, though? It’s not like you imprinted on her. You don’t have any emotional connection to her other than being childhood friends.”

“I don’t know, Embry. I really liked her ever since she moved back to Forks, but ever since she got together with Cullen, I can feel this deep jealousy inside me, and I cannot get my mind off of her.”

“Man, you really need to find someone to imprint on.” Seth chuckled.

“Why? Why does it matter if I imprint? What will change?”

“It will take your mind off of Bella, Jake. Look at the others. They are happy with their imprints.” Seth pointed at the pack and the imprints, enjoying their time together.

I sighed, and Seth’s smile instantly dropped. “I’m really sorry, man. I shouldn’t have brought that up.”

“No, Seth, it’s okay, really.”

“See, Seth? Not everyone who finds their imprint becomes instantly happy. None of them belong to themselves anymore. And the sickest part is their genes tell them they’re happy about it. It’s either that, or they end up like Embry, miserable and sad when their imprint abandons them.”

Anger took over me the second Jacob mouthed his words. He may have been angry, but I was angrier. He had no right to bring (Y/N) up as the reason why I was miserable. It was me, myself, and I the ones to blame for my misery, not her.

Without giving it a second thought, I stood up from the log, turned around, and angrily stomped away from the beach towards the woods, as others started yelling at me to come back. I was too angry to be around others right now, and I was hoping I could let some steam off running. The last thing I remember before running away was the memory of (Y/N) smiling.

(Y/N)’s POV

Kyveli had been flipping through several travel magazines for quite some time now. I wasn’t sure what exactly she was looking for, but, from what she told me, once she got to meet me, I knew she wanted to get away from here - meet new places, new people, and probably new vampires. She suddenly stopped, looking at the page in front of her excitedly.

“(Y/N)! (Y/N)! I think I just found where I want us to go!” She turned the magazine around, almost shoving it into my face.

The two pages in front of me featured a lengthy article on Tuscany and the Italian countryside. Though Tuscany was beautiful, especially this time of the year, I could only think of one thing every time I saw the word “Tuscany” anywhere: the Volturi. After I managed to escape Volterra without getting caught or noticed, I was doing everything in my own capacity to not cross my path with them ever again. It would not be just risky if I moved there with Kyveli; it would be pure stupidity.

“I’m sorry, Kyveli, I’m not really sure about Tuscany. The territory has been claimed for thousands of years now. We cannot just go there.” I didn’t want to tell her directly that I was worried about the Volturi - she didn’t need to know that.

“Come on, auntie. It would be fun, I promise.” Kyveli was looking at me with pleading eyes. She was actually really good at looking innocent and pure, given that, under the cute brown eyes she wore, there were actually two red eyes that thirsted for human blood.

“I’m not really sure, sweety. I really don’t want to go there. I’m sorry. You would have to search for another place that we can go, okay?” I didn’t want to crush her dreams but I knew better than to step into Volturi territory, and the less Kyveli knew about them, the better. Though she was, theoretically, an older human than I was, technically she was a much younger vampire, and we treated each other like aunt and niece, though the dynamic was more like two friends.

The young vampire sighed deeply, clearly disappointed, but continued flipping through the pages, hoping to find something to interest her. I went back to my usual daydreaming, trying to think of a universe where Embry and I were still together and happy. Everything would be so much easier if I had Embry by my side now. He would know what to do, and how to wash my fears away.

I wasn’t saying that I wasn’t happy to have found Kyveli - she was family. But I wished I could be back with Embry, who was the family I always wished I had after I lost mine. Kyveli did not fill in the void in my heart; I was happy that I had found a part of my old family in her, but no one could ever make me as happy as Embry had made me in the short time we knew each other.

“Hey, (Y/N), it’s getting late.” She barely spoke, looking in front of her at the sun that had just recently set, and the sky that was painted with orange, pink, and purple hues.

“Yes, it’s the Twilight hour, the most beautiful time during the day.” I looked in front of me, as the quiet sea was painted dark blue, almost black.

Twilight was my favorite time of the day; probably other vampires’ favorite, as well. It was the time we could go hunt undisturbed, not having to worry about the sun shining on our cold, thick marble skin. As if on cue, Kyveli turned back to me.

“I will go hunting. Do you want to come with me?”

I had to think about it. Did I want to go hunt? Not really. Did I need to go hunt? Again, not really. Maintaining an animal blood diet, I didn’t need to hunt as much as Kyveli did. And though I disagreed with her diet choice, I wouldn’t voice it. She had to live alone for such a long time. I had to live alone too, and I also went through the human blood diet stage, so maybe she would rethink it in the future, and see what fits her better.

“Ehm, no, it’s okay. I’m not that hungry, anyway. You can go. Just be careful.”

“(Y/N), I’m always careful. I survived alone for quite some time now, so I think I’m good, right?”

I smiled at her. “Yes, yes, you are. You know, I’m proud of you, no matter what you chose in your life. You managed to survive on your own, and I couldn’t be more proud of the woman you’ve become.”

She smiled sweetly at me, wrapping her arms around me. “I’m proud of you, too. I’m so sorry for everything you went through.”

“It doesn’t matter now, really. Now, go. You must be starving.”

Kyveli smiled at me one last time before she walked away, trying to not attract unnecessary attention by the few people still sitting on chairs around us, looking at the now darker sky. After she left, I turned back to my misery. Ideally, I would go back to Forks in a heartbeat - if I had one.

But I had neither a heartbeat nor a reason that would make me go back. I really wished I could tell Kyveli everythingI had been through, but I decided that, though she was family, I couldn’t fully trust her yet. Something inside me told me that I couldn’t trust her with such information - I just didn’t know what it was.

So, I just sat back, and took the now dark sky in, enjoying the nothingness that we were. Vampires, humans, werewolves, or whatever magical creature you could think of - we were nothing compared to the endless universe. And yet, everything felt too much, too intense, and too complicated to handle.

Despite the terrible headache that plunged into my mind; despite the pain I felt all over my body due to Embry’s absence; despite everything I’d been through, I was also grateful that I made it thus far, through the ups and downs. I had the privilege of living through three different centuries that were filled with changes, pain, fear for the unknown, but, most importantly, new opportunities.

And I was in the privileged position - as a vampire - to be able to move around, and meet all these different aspects of life. I lived long enough to grow mentally, get to know the world, and mature significantly enough to take important decisions for myself.

I was indeed proud of who I had become, ‘cause, even though I had seen many bad things happening around me, I did not turn evil or bitter towards others. I could have, but I preferred to keep my integrity and ethics, and not stir away from my beliefs because of someone else.

I was so absorbed in my thoughts that I didn’t notice Kyveli had already come back from her hunt and sat down on the chair next to me.

“You’re back early. What? Didn’t you feed enough?” I chuckled, still not looking away from the sky in front of me.

“No, I wouldn’t say I really did, (Y/N).” A deep voice replied instead of Kyveli’s sweet, honey-like one.

I turned back to look at my interlocutor, terrified as I had recognized the voice in a split second. “Fe-Felix?”

Embry’s POV

We were patrolling with Quil, as we did lately. Nothing really changed apart from the fact that Quil had an imprint now and I didn’t. Yet, Quil was respectful enough to not think about him and Claire for as long as we had to patrol, and I appreciated his efforts. I couldn’t say the same from the other members of the pack; with the exception of Sam, who always kept a clear mind during patrols, everyone else but Brady and Colin, were thinking about their imprints andthe patrol.

‘You’re okay, man?’ Quil’s voice echoed in my mind.

‘Yeah, just thinking. I would really like to get away from here. There does not seem to be a danger around, and I would really like to get away from here. You know, go away for some time, I don’t know how long.’

‘No, you won’t, Embry.’ Sam growled. ‘The pack still needs you. There are still vampires in the area, and we don’t know how many others will be tempted to come here. You will stay with the pack, and that’s final.’

I sighed. I was given no choice, no options, and I was pressured into staying somewhere I didn’t want to. I felt trapped under someone else’s orders. I was angry at Sam for not letting me get the hell out of here. He couldn’t make such choices for me.

‘I’m your Alpha, Embry. Whatever I say, goes. Now, continue patrolling, and I want no more complaining and whining by any of you. Focus on your duties.’

Without another word, we continued patrolling around our territory. I kept my thoughts to a minimum, ‘cause I knew that whatever I thought of, Sam or any of the others would pick on it, and start pressuring me once again. It was actually nice when no one was thinking about anything at all. Involuntarily or purposefully, we were all usually thinking about, at least, one thing, so not hearing anything at all, brought me some peace.

However, our peace was short-lived the moment we started hearing Jacob’s thoughts. He was informed Bella was back, and he went to see her. Only Bella was changed, but she was not a vampire. Bella was pregnant! How was that possible? Jacob kept playing their argument in his mind. He tried to convince her to stay human, and get rid of whatever she had inside of her, but she wouldn’t listen.

Jacob was running angrily through the woods, howling for us to meet him at the usually unoccupied lumber mill that was just a few miles south of La Push. We all howled back, promising to meet him there. Everyone was calling for Jacob through the mind link, not knowing or not believing if what he involuntarily showed us was true or not.

Words were thrown around. ‘Dangerous.’ ‘Monstrosity.’ ‘An abomination.’ And then, everyone - including me - were shouting ‘We can’t allow it. We can’t allow it.’ over and over, circling Jacob, like he was the perpetrator and accused.

‘We have to protect the tribe. What they’ve bred won’t be able to control its thirst. Every human will be in danger.’ Sam growled, using his Alpha voice. ‘We must destroy it before it’s born.’

‘You mean, kill Bella?’ Seth sounded terrified, not believing what Sam was proposing.

‘Bella’s human. Our protection applies to her.’ Jacob tried to reason with Sam.

‘Bella made her choice a long time ago, Jacob. Get ready. We have real enemies to fight tonight.’

‘Tonight?’ Jacob and I said at the same time.

Sam moved towards Jacob menacingly. ‘You will fight with us, Jacob.’

Sam was pushing Jacob to bow down and follow his orders until Jacob snapped. ‘I will not! I am the grandson of Ephraim Black. I am the grandson of a chief! I wasn’t born to follow you, or anyone else.’ Jacob growled before he ran away, cutting the mind link between him and us.

Seth was whining, sad to see Jacob go. Seth, like some of us, knew that killing Bella was not right, even if she was pregnant with the vampire’s baby; killing her would only cause more harm and hatred between us and the Cullens. If (Y/N) found out that we killed Bella and attacked the Cullens, she would never forgive me. The Cullens were there for her when I wasn’t.

‘Will you stop with (Y/N) already? I get it, you miss her, we all do. But if she were to side with the Cullens on that, you should not have hesitated to fight her, as the rest of us would.’ Jared growled at me.

I growled back at him, furious that he even dared to say that I would attack my imprint, even if she went against the pack’s beliefs and actions. I couldn’t stand this attitude coming from them. My imprint was above every single one of them, even my own mother. I would never do anything to hurt her, not anymore. So, I ran away, following Jacob’s actions, as I heard Seth and Quil calling my name.

I continued running through the woods, unsure of where I was going. My mind was no longer driving me; it was my feet that drove me towards the Cullens’ house - the only place I knew Jacob would go right now. Looking and smelling around, I tried to catch Jacob’s smell, as I couldn’t hear his thoughts anymore. I found him a couple of hundred feet away from the house, so I quickly ran back to a tree where I had hidden some clothes, changed, and ran back to Jacob’s side.

“What are you doing here?” Jacob asked me annoyed, without turning around.

“I left Sam’s pack. I couldn’t stand behind what he wanted to do. Bella is still human. And I know (Y/N) wouldn’t support getting rid of her or the baby. Whatever that baby is, it’s not right. If Bella wants the baby, nobody can take that away from her. Not Edward. Not the Cullens. Not you, or me, or the pack.”

Jacob didn’t say a thing back, rather just turned to look at the house. “I’m gonna go give the Cullens a heads-up. You can stay here, or follow me.”

Without saying a word, I followed behind Jacob, walking closer towards the house, where we saw Edward standing on the balcony. “Get ready. They’re coming for Bella.”

“They’re not gonna touch her.” The vampire replied.

“Agreed.” Both Jacob and Edward nodded at each other before the vampire nodded towards me, then went back into the house.

We heard a few branches breaking, and we turned around to see Quil, Seth, and Leah. “What are you three doing here now?” Jacob shouted annoyed.

“We’re not gonna let you two get yourselves killed. We left Sam’s pack. We wouldn’t agree with his plans. We’re not gonna kill a human, whether she’s carrying a demon baby or not. Your stand on the issue made us look at things from a different perspective. Sam’s on his own now. Jared, Paul, Brady, and Collin won’t be enough for him to stand against us. He will eventually have to back down.” Quil announced.

“Did he send you? Does he know you’re here?” I asked all three of them.

“He doesn’t, but he will figure it out soon. Thankfully, we left after he told us what his plan is.” Leah replied.

“What’s his plan? Are you sure he’s not going to change it after you three left?” Jacob wanted to know, to make sure that Sam wouldn’t change his plans.

“We don’t know if he will, but his original plan was to get the place surrounded, leaving no margin for any of the Cullens to get out. He wants them weak, unable to feed, thus unable to resist an attack. He’ll be waiting for his opportunity, and when he finds it, he will strike.” Quil narrated Sam’s whole plan, and we knew we could trust them. Quil and Seth were our friends after all, and Leah was (Y/N)’s.

“Alright, I’m gonna let the Cullens know, and I’ll check up on Bella. You can wait here, or you can come with me if you can keep the formalities.” Jacob informed us, before walking away.

We stood back, looking around the “enemies’” territory, waiting for something to happen. There was tension in the air; we expected Sam’s next move, but also didn’t know when that would be. We were filled with anticipation and nerves, as we had nothing to do in particular.

We hadn’t realized that the buff vampire came out of the house until we smelled him. All four of us turned around to look at him, as he waved at us to follow him. Though Leah protested at first, she came with us, as we followed Emmett into the house.

It was a big house, surprisingly warm and bright. We could smell Bella in the living room, on the upper floor, as we followed Emmett up the stairs. He led us to the kitchen where Esme had prepared food for us.

“I thought you might be hungry, so I prepared something quick. I hadn’t done that in a while. Bella cannot keep food down, so it’s of no use to try and force her to eat anything.”

We silently thanked her and dug into the food. Even Leah seemed a bit more trusting of the vampire mom. (Y/N) had mentioned two or three times that Esme was like a mother to her, making sure she was okay, even if they were far away from each other. So, I supposed Leah was more open to trusting Esme, just like (Y/N) always did.

“So,”, Quil broke the silence, “did you have any news from (Y/N)?”

“Unfortunately, Quil, we know as much as you do. She hasn’t contacted us yet, and we’re getting worried. We hoped she did, but it’s been too long and she hasn’t. We don’t know what to think of it.” Esme replied sadly, looking down at the floor. The doctor came by her side, hugging her around the waist, as she leaned on his shoulder for comfort.

“I’m sure she will call us soon. She just needs a little time to think. She was probably hurt by your argument, but I think she’ll come around. You’re too precious for her, Embry. And the pack is her new family, so I’m sure she’ll come around.” The doctor tried to comfort me and my packmates, though there was still uncertainty lingering in his words.

“I really hope you are right. I.. I just miss her so much. Every day I miss her more than the previous. She’s also the reason why I couldn’t follow Sam and his plans. I knew that (Y/N) would never forgive me if any of you got hurt by one of our own. You’re her family too, and she asked me to get along with you. I’m gonna keep that promise for her sake, even if she never comes back.”

“That’s really sweet of you, Embry. We want you to know that we never meant to hurt any of you. We recently found out the reason why your people transform into wolves. We never wanted to cause you the pain you had to go through during your shift. We found comfort in this place, and we wanted to come back, looking for that comfort. We are truly sorry for any bad thing we caused you.” Esme was feeling genuinely regretful for them coming back here, and causing us to shift. And I believed her that it was not their intention to cause us harm.

“We know you didn’t mean to. Well, not all of us do, but some of us are okay with it now. We learned to live with you. Besides, if it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t have met (Y/N), and Embry wouldn’t have imprinted on her. And I would have never become the first female werewolf.” Leah chuckled. I would have never thought she would ever be accepting of the Cullens’ existence in the area, but life was full of surprises.

“That’s really sweet of you, Leah. We were indeed surprised to hear about your transformation, but you’re a strong woman, so there was no doubt why you carried the wolf gene. You were meant for great things.” Esme smiled at Leah, looking like she saw a new daughter in her. Leah smiled back, looking down, blushing.

The Cullens were actually quite nice if you got to know them better, and if it weren’t for Bella’s pregnancy, we would all sit back, relax, and enjoy their company and food, instead of worrying about the baby and Sam’s upcoming attack on the Cullens.

“Don’t worry about Sam, Embry.” Edward mumbled. “He won’t get near Bella, whether you all are there or not. I won’t let them hurt my family.”

“We have no doubt about that. But Sam is unpredictable, and we don’t know how he’ll react after all 5 of us left. He’s outpowered and it would be a suicide mission, but we still don’t know what he’ll do about it; how he’ll react. We’d dread to see Brady and Collin by his side.” Quil was saddened at the possibility of Sam putting the younger ones into a fight he would most probably lose. They didn’t deserve that; they were too young and too inexperienced.

“Well, whatever he chooses to do, I think we’ll be even. We haven’t hunted for weeks. We can’t go out of the house. So, we may not be fully capable of fighting Sam.” Emmett sounded desperate; his eyes were a dark sand - almost black - color, and there was no doubt that he was hungry.

“No fights. We won’t be the ones to break the treaty.” The doctor quietly replied.

“The treaty is void, at least in Sam’s mind. From the moment Bella got pregnant and there’s the possibility of the baby killing people, Sam can only think of one thing: getting rid of the baby, even if he has to go through Bella.” Jacob’s voice broke a bit, at the thought of his best friend getting killed by his pack family.

We were soon done with our food, and left the house, preferring to go patrol the perimeter, making sure that Sam can’t get near. We were torn between shifting or staying in our human forms, especially since we got a glance of Sam, Paul, and Jared looking at us from afar. Thankfully and expectedly, they didn’t come near us, rather they stayed watching us.

Days were going by like this. We would patrol for a few hours, eat at the Cullens, then go back to patrol, as we took turns sleeping and patrolling, just to make sure there were always at least two of us each time. In contrast to the Cullens, we needed sleep, but they needed to hunt, because, after some time, it looked unbearable to them.

Jacob had a thought that the baby would most likely crave blood, and the doctor, having some spare blood available, was feeding it to Bella who seemed to be a bit healthier and more alive than before. She was finally able to slowly start eating again while drinking blood for the baby. But that meant that some of the Cullens would regularly leave the house to avoid attacking the blood bags or Bella. So, they would come with us, and we would walk around the area, not straying too far from the house, in fear of Sam attacking unexpectedly.

However, the closer Bella was to deliver, the more intense everything would become. There was the fear of her giving birth way earlier than expected - could be today or the next day, no one knew for sure. We were on the edge minute after minute, waiting for Sam to make a move. The Cullens were getting more anxious and hungry, and the prospect of Bella giving birth with hungry vampires around put a toll on everyone’s psychology.

Jacob had been thinking constantly, trying to find different ways to somehow distract Sam and his pack. We needed just enough time for them to get distracted so that the Cullens could go hunting. Jacob thought of calling Paul and Jared over to negotiate a sort of return of the rest of us to the pack - a white lie to earn us some time.

However, that turned out to be unnecessary, when, that same afternoon, Sam, Paul, and Jared, along with Collin and Brady came by the Cullen household. Sam asked for a truce, declaring that waiting for something that would inevitably happen instead of focusing on everything else was meaningless. He promised he wouldn’t hurt Bella or her baby, as long as the Cullens made sure that the baby would not cause a problem to the humans.

A new truce and some small talk later, Sam and his pack left the Cullen household. Jacob had officially established his own pack which would work alongside Sam’s for the better of the tribe and the humans around, so none of us had to go back to Sam’s pack. We were all glad that this part of our reality was arranged and done with.

We now had to look out for Bella giving birth, but, as Sam and his pack were no longer a threat to the Cullens, Carlisle proposed that we returned to the reservation. They would make sure they fed in groups, and Carlisle would make sure everything was ready for Bella, so none of us had to stick around through a what-was-expected-to-be painful birth.

Though he didn’t want to leave Bella’s side, Jacob was finally convinced to stay away from Bella and the Cullens for just enough time for her to give birth, get changed, and get used to the vampire life. Her change was always something she wanted, and now, it was the only solution if they wanted Bella to stay with them. So, we just picked up the few clothes we had left back at the Cullens, along with food Esme prepared for everyone, and returned back to the reservation.

Surprisingly, the transition from all this tension to the more calming environment of the reservation was easy and smooth. Our families were still waiting for us, and nothing seemed to have changed around. Now, we would go back to patrolling, visiting Emily and Sam’s house, and everything else we used to do before all this chaos as if nothing happened at all; as if we never argued about Sam’s decision; as if we never abandoned the pack.

I returned back to my house quietly, now that my mother had no issue with me going out at odd times, still convinced that I was working instead of what I was actually doing. The house was dark and quiet, but there was my mom’s smell still lingering in the air. I entered the kitchen, taking some leftovers from the fridge and eating them directly from the Tupperware, not interested in heating them up. I was uninterested in the food, but I knew I had to eat to remain strong and maintain a clear mind.

As I was finishing up my meal, I heard the front door open, and my mother entered the house, walking towards the kitchen. We locked eyes and she must have seen the pain and tiredness in my own, as she came closer to hug me. I didn’t expect her sudden affection - not that it was uncommon of my mother; she was a loving person. I hugged her back, missing the simpler times, where we would spend most of our day together, whenever she didn’t have too much work at the souvenir shop. The old times, when I wasn’t a wolf; when I was just a teenager, free of responsibilities.

“Embry, I’m sorry to intervene, but you’ve been looking a bit sad lately as if you are not present. I’m not gonna lie to you, I am getting worried about you. Please talk to me. You know you can talk to me about everything.”

“It’s nothing, really. I’ve just been feeling a bit under the weather lately, but I’m sure it will be over soon. Don’t worry about it.”

My mother took a few seconds to herself, not saying exactly what was on her mind. She gulped a bit before she voiced her concern. “Embry? Is it about the shifter thing?”

I froze in my place, not knowing what to say. “The whatthing?!”

Tiffany’s POV

I’d been getting more and more worried about Embry lately. He was not his usual, happy self. He hadn’t been himself for almost half a year now but at first, I attributed it to him being a teenager who just went through his rebel stage. However, the more time went by, the more worried I would be about him being out at odd hours, sneaking out of the house when he thought I didn’t hear him, and sleeping in the morning. I felt like he was wasting his life away.

That was until (Y/N) (Y/L/N) came by my house to see me. She was the niece of a local businesswoman, Esme Cullen, and she worked for her aunt’s construction company. I was suspicious at first, but the more we talked, the more she made me feel at ease. She told me that Embry was working for her aunt’s company, and that was the reason why he was out all the time - she confessed that Embry himself asked her and her aunt to not tell me anything about his whereabouts.

(Y/N) seemed like a wonderful girl, sweet, innocent, and gentle, and I wished Embry would find someone like her, or get closer to her. Mrs. Cullen was the wife of the local doctor, up in Forks, and (Y/N) herself seemed to come from a respectable family. I didn’t actually know her family, but her gentle nature and sweet personality managed to win me over and make me trust her. Though we didn’t talk for too long, I could sense her kindness and beautiful soul.

Unfortunately, I had not seen her ever since she came by. When I mentioned her visit to Embry, he was puzzled, and he slowly started getting angrier and angrier before he eventually stormed out of the house. He came back a few hours later, still angry, and he wouldn’t speak to me for a few days. After that, he would just look miserable. He would still not say a word; he would only mumble occasionally, and that was it. I was getting worried about my only son. What could have upset him so much that he was feeling so down and sad?

I was searching back and forth, looking for answers all over the reservation and the surrounding area, but nobody seemed to know a thing, and if they knew, they wouldn’t tell me. For anyone who “knew” me, I was an outsider, I wasn’t a Quileute, so I assumed that was why they couldn’t trust me with the tribe’s “secrets”. And I also assumed that Embry himself must have been feeling that sense of alienation, compared to his friends who were born of Quileute parents, and felt more connected with the reservation and the tribe.

Between working and looking for answers, I was getting too tired. I had to search for answers from the ones who were the closest and at the center of the action, and who, most likely, knew what was actually going on with my son. I went to the Elders of the Quileute tribe, the council that was responsible for all the major decisions taken within the tribe.

Currently, they consisted of Billy Black, Quil Ateara the third, and Sue Clearwater, the late wife of Harry Clearwater. Billy’s son, Jacob, and Quil’s grandson, Quil, were Embry’s best friends, so they must have known if something had happened to Embry, and what he wouldn’t tell me.

It turned out that getting close to the council was not easy; I already knew that I wouldn’t be let into the tribe’s inner circle, but I needed to know. I would try to approach them with my questions every chance I could get, and every single time, they would do anything to avoid me. I was getting tired and frustrated, so, one day, I decided that the only thing I could do would be to go by Sue’s house. She couldn’t deny me if I insisted on her giving me answers.

And so it happened. I went by Sue Clearwater’s house one day, prepared to get the answers I sought for. This time, she wouldn’t be able to dismiss me. I knocked on her door, and she opened it, not knowing who it was. The surprise on her face was evident when she saw it was me. She mumbled something about being busy, but I wouldn’t let her dismiss me this time. It was time I knew the truth.

“Please, Sue, don’t kick me out. I need to know what is going on with my son. Please, mother to mother, you must know how I feel. Please, tell me what’s going on.” I pleaded with the woman, touching her arm to stop her from leaving me out of her house. She sighed and silently invited me into her house.

“Would you like something to drink?” She pointed at the couch for me to sit, seemingly hesitant to talk to me.

“No, thank you. I just want to ask you a few things if you don’t mind.” I sat down, looking straight at her.

“Of course. What would you like to ask me?”

“I just want to know if you know what is going on with my Embry. Apparently, he’s been working at a local construction company, but lately, he seems a bit off, like he is not present, like he’s sad and depressed, and I don’t know what to believe anymore. Do you know what is going on?”

“Uhm, I’m not really supposed to talk about these things, you know. There are some things that happen within the tribe and affect everyone in a different way, but I’m not the one to talk to you about them. It’s not my secret to tell, though I’m directly and indirectly affected by them. You may need to talk with Embry about it. He should be the one to explain everything to you. We wished we could tell you, but Embry did not wish for that. And even if I am a member of the council, there’s only so much I can do. You better talk to Embry. He will or will not let you know what is going on with him.”

I let Sue’s words sink in my mind a bit. I had been thinking about it for a long time, but I was never completely sure if that was the case. However, the way Sue presented everything made me seriously think about the possibility that I was rightfully thinking what I was thinking all this time.

I lifted my eyes to look at the woman sitting across from me, with certainty in my eyes. “So, the legends are true, huh?”
