Shockingly, I forgot that I am under ethical and moral responsibility to analyze the anatomical accuracy of this mug. Let us do so now.
We must first determine the species on which this design is based. I think we can safely assume the crab to be based off of a blue crab (callinectes sapidus), as the shape generally follows that of a blue crab and the color is accurate to a blue crab once it has been steamed, in addition to the commonality of said species and the inclination of the public to think of blue crabs when picturing the popular idea of a “crab”. Based of off this assumption, we can judge the accuracy of the design.
The pereopods are more or less accurate, though obviously simplified for design purposes. Each has the correct number of podomeres, with the basi-ischium and coxa hidden under the carapace. The carapace itself, though, has a significant number of inaccuracies. The lateral spines, if this is a blue crab, should not be curved downwards and should instead extrude directly outward from the carapace. The anterolateral teeth are similarly inaccurate, being incorrect in both number and shape. The crab, which should have 8 such teeth on either side of the carapace, instead has only 5. The rostrum and antennae are not pictured; instead the front of the carapace extends far over the eyestalks, with little definition given to the orbits of the eyes.
Despite these flaws, I consider this crab quite accurate, especially for a design of this style. None of the details of the crab that have been excluded take away from its recognizability as Crab, and the attention paid to the accuracy of the pereopods in particular is commendable. Not only was it my first experience with positive LGBT representation, it was the show I clung to when everything else went to shit. Whatever was going on in my life, I knew I had this show in my corner, making me laugh, making me cry, making me feel okay about my place in the universe.
