READING LIST: Female Friendships
In honour of Galentine’s Day (what’s Galentine’s Day? Oh, it’s only the best day of the year!), I decided to focus on a topic that is overlooked far too often in fiction: friendship between women. We all know about the Bechdel test, but try putting together a list of books where female friendship is the focus of the story, I dare you. Bonus points if the women in question are not related. It is practically impossible! That said, here are some of my favourite fictional examples of female friendship – the good and the bad. Some of these duos are attached at the hip for life, whereas other relationships go sour in the worst possible way.

Single on Valentines Day Aesthetic for the signs
Sagittariustake a step back from all the emotions you’ve been having, and take a closer look inward. What do you want, what do you need today? You could spend the morning reading in the paper or doing a crosswords puzzle, or just making yourself an exceptionally good breakfast with eggs and fresh orange juice. Notice the world around you, the marks that a bird’s feet left in the snow, the sound that the cars make driving by your window. All the beauty of the people surrounds you, and you are part of it.
CapricornWatching a movie that satisfies your hopeless-romantic heart and then writing a platonic love letter to your best friend. Choosing some quotes that speak to you, scribbling some fast sketches of flowers, and telling them why you value their friendship so much. Shopping on ebay for a special thing that no one else would have in their home. Putting on some lipstick even tough it feels weird in the house, listening to your favorite music, and dancing with yourself. You are exactly where you belong. This is right.
Aquariusbaking a cake and being really proud of yourself for it. Sending pics of a new outfit to your friends and letting them hype you up about it. Taking a walk down some streets with few people on them, listening to a song that makes you feel like summer, spinning around and letting yourself be free. Imagining your perfect botanical garden and making some plans to get new plants. Feeling sure that people appreciate you. And if you’re not there yet, you will get there, cause people do.
Pisceswriting down your thoughts on a matter that is important to you and then texting them to the person you wanna talk to. Speaking your mind. Then not thinking about that anymore, but finding a fun thing to do for yourself for the day, like rearranging your books on the shelves, or taking a walk to that coffee shop that still sells to-go-coffee and getting a large cinnamon latte just to treat yourself. Taking the evening to just enjoy yourself and being lazy and doing whatever you sponteously feel like. This is your life. Appreciate the power that gives you.
Single on Valentines Day Aesthetic for the signs
LeoGetting down with a really, really good book and taking some time to get into this other world. Baking some bread and eating it with too much butter. Getting a flower from a shop or from the vase in your house and wearing it behind your ear, just to feel cute.Showing yourself some kindness and treating yourself to a massage that you give your own hands, to remove the tension and relax every muscle in your fingers. Feeling like you owe the world nothing, but you owe yourself the world.
Virgomaking some Art today, doesn’t matter if it’s good or not, just some painting, or some music, or crocheting or finishing a home project. Making something. Then having a calm moment, taking a walk and smiling at all the dogs that cross your way, and the owners too, if they seem friendly. When at home, using some of that good skincare product that you don’t want to use everyday because it was expensive. Indulging in the knowledge that you have to be nowhere today, you have no social obligations, you can just do what you want.
Librathe day could feel heavy, but heavy in a good way, in the soft, velvety way of knowing exactly what you want and the delicious hope that you’re gonna get it eventually. Making some good tea, putting on a coat and boots and drinking it out on the balcony in the freezing cold. You drink the hot tea and the air is so clear and good for you. Today, your realize the depths of one of your friendships and the true meaning of soulmates.
ScorpioUsing the day to do something you’ve been wanting to do for a while, like finishing a sewing project or even just calling a friend you haven’t talked to in a while. Showing your plants some love and watering them, spraying them with water, maybe taking some cuttings. Doing your eyeliner just so, and feeling really confident in your body because you should be, and you’re absolutely stunning. Laying naked on your bed without any reason and maybe painting on yourself with watercolor, just for the joy of the colors.

Arieswalking around in your light pink nightgown all afternoon, your hair freshly washed, you smell of that favorite, expensive perfume, just for yourself. Rearranging some flowers, tidying up and enjoying your clean apartment in that light-hearted mood that usually only comes up on a free vacation day. Getting some macarons or eclairs or other impertinently expensive sweets for yourself and enjoying them, one by one. Savoring each moment of your skincare routine, enjoying putting on your clothes, doing your hair, putting on your gloves. It’s a day full of mindfulness.
TaurusSparkling eyes and warm glowing heart. Today, you make yourself a good meal and enjoy every second of cooking it. Putting on a piano playlist and letting loose in daydreams. Drinking some sparkling wine and looking out of your window, to put some moviestar drama behind the delicious melancholy you wanna feel. Ordering yourself something online, something you have not entirely thought through, but you want it, and today you just let yourself get it.
GeminiSleeping in and letting that morning go over. Feeling silky soft in the sheets. Eating breakfast in bed, watching a really good movie instead of a TV series because it gives you so much satisfaction once it’s over. Opening your jewelry box, picking out some beautiful pieces for today. Taking some pretty pictures in lingerie just for yourself, or maybe to send them someone someday in the future, but not today.
Cancerletting in a warm bath, lighting some candles and enjoying some time by yourself, watching a good Netflix show. Doing a face mask, maybe calling your mom and talking to her about that book you both read and about the worries she will take away from you. Doing your nails and eating some of the good cookies cause damn you deserve them. Feeling sparkly and special.

You can also buy a ticket in person at the registers, or at the event.Join us for a night of art creating, connection making, cookie eating, music listening, and wine tasting in the Strand’s beautiful Rare Book Room! Enjoy a guided tour of several delicious varieties of wine among the beautiful spines of books dating back centuries, and meet some fellow literary oenophiles. Partake in some delicious treats while listening to the sounds of a duo of basses! If you’re feeling inspired, bring your art materials and a crafty spirit! Strand will provide a coloring station, a bookmark-making station, and some art supplies for you to use (while supplies last; we encourage you to bring your own!)
