To include genitals or not to include genitals…. that is the question.

I think I was talked out of it by my team so we could have greater reach in conservative US schools. I think that normalizing differently shaped genitals is a really important message, and I suppose I don’t mind having that on the website instead.

[Hi, Boston! I’m Dr. Williams. You are probably familiar with the stereotypical male and female sexes for humans (these are called dyadic), but scientists have known for a long time that there’s way more options than that. We call these intersex, and it’s more common than you may think! These are normal and natural conditions and part of the beautiful diversity of human bodies. Just like we have lots of variation in hair color, nose shape, or height, we have many shades of gendered biology, too.

When it comes to our bodies, no two are exactly alike! Genitals are a great example of this. They come in all shapes and sizes and colors. Sometimes there’s a medical need for the body’s plumbing to be modified surgically at birth. However, doctors will often operate on infants with functioning genitals for no good medical reason - just to make their bodies look “normal.” This is terrible because it hurts children, makes lasting changes without consent, and sends a message that their bodies are not okay.

The truth is that all bodies are beautiful. But, your body doesn’t define you: you can have any gender identity or sexual orientation with any body type. Our bodies change as we grow. Sometimes our relationship with our bodies is part of how we understand our gender. The important thing is try to be a friend to your body and use words that feel good to you to describe it.

FYI box:The United Nations released a statement in 2013 condemning forced genital-normalizing surgery, but unfortunately, it still happens.11 Groups like InterACT are working to help advocate for the human rights of all children.]

This is a very rough draft from the upcoming version of the GENDER book I’m working on, posting here for community feedback. Please let me know what you think, where I am being problematic and how it could be better! If you prefer to respond anonymously or join the team to be a more active collaborator, you can write me at [email protected]

Feel free to use it as-is if you’d like to, though. It’s creative commons licensed so the only limitations are to share your source and don’t sell it.

Everyone’s genitals are a little different — yours are unique to you. Penises can be big or small, thick or thin, long or short, straight or with a little curve. Vulvas and labias can be big or small. Some people have wide vaginal openings, others have smaller ones. Genitals come in many different skin colors and tones, from dark brown to purple to tan to light pink, with many different textures, as well as types and amounts of pubic hair.

It may take time to feel confident about your genitals, but remembering that you’re “normal” and unique is the best way to feel comfortable in your own skin. Try talking with a parent or another adult you trust about your feelings: it might be awkward or scary at first to bring it up, but they can give you support and love as you get to know your body.

You are scum. thanks

This is a troll right?

Yeah fuck having a sexual preference! I’m scum if I don’t find that obese old man to be a possible sexual partner! Fuck me for being straight and not having sex with both genders! Damn me to hell! I am awful!

Fuck you, get a grip on life.

OMG I can’t even.  This is so fucking transphobic.  Gender has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH GENITALS.  It’s fine if you are straight (although I suspect you have inherited the heterosexual victim complex) but if you’re straight and you’re a man that means you should and WILL be open to women of ALL SORTS including gendersissy women, trans women, gendersparkle women etc.  Believe me there are tons of women out there who dont have penises, vaginas or ANYTHING they want to label.  Not everything you think is a “vagina” actually is.  Not everything you think is a “penis” actually is.  THESE LABELS ARE ARBITRARY.  If you believe that being straight is inherently anti-dick then you are scum.

Last week I had a very interesting conversation with a few colleagues about body positivity. At some point one of my colleagues said it was very brave of some people to expose themselfs (anonymously) on (sex) blogs. And while there are lots of people exposing themselfs, there are also lots of people who struggle with their appearance and are afraid to show themselfs to others!

So today i was thinking: why not show some appreciation to those (especially women) who are insecure how they vagina/vulva look!

First of all, everyone’s genitals are different, and that’s a really great thing. Variations in size, shape, structure, color, and sensitivity abound. It wouldn’t be normal if we all had the same looks right?

About the labia minora: Well some lips might be small and short, and others might be larger and be visible past the outer lips. Some will be bumpy-textured (they are made of the same type of tissue as the scrotum) and be wrinkled, some will be smooth. Some will plump up noticeably and change color as blood flows into the tissues when arousal happens.  I have seen a few and I must tell you that the uniqueness of a vagina (size, shape, etc.) makes it appealing. Often, one side of the lips will hang lower than the other, just like one of the testicles of men hangs lower than the other! That’s totally normal. Some lips will be pale pink, others dark pink, red, dark red, purplish, light brown, or dark brown.

About the Labia Majora: Some lips will appear more closed, hiding the labia minora, some won’t. Some will have more pubic hair on them than others.

At the end of the day it’s still a vagina, and the appearence of your private parts makes each and every one of you unique! Don’t let anybody else say different! Ladies learn about yourself, use a mirror, explore every inch of your body (alone or with your partner). Our body makes us who we are!
