Iwaizumi looked at Oikawa’s message without answering him. He hated that he understood more than he did. He didn’t want to hear him brag about how great of a friend he was, even if it was true.
By placing his phone in his jacket pocket, he sank into the sofa in the small dressing room of Y/n. As soon as he closed his eyes all the moments spent with her, all the laughs and teasing came in his mind and feeling the butterflies in his stomach couldn’t stop a smile.
“are you okay ‘zumi?”
So lost in his thoughts, he didn’t realize the girl was coming. And at that moment, seeing her so different from her usual self, he realized how much he liked her every facet and would not have heard the end of his best friend’s boosting.
“Oh yeah, I’m okay” he suddenly answered, “you look great” he added, trying to calm her down.
“thank you… I feel so weird” laughed Y/n looking in the mirror in the room.
“you’ll get used to it, you’ll see.” he gave her a smile, believing in what he said.
The girl turned smiling at him “let’s cross our fingers then.”
Iwaizumi approached her and took her hand, starting to caress her with his tumb “I know it’ll be fine.”
Y/n crossed his green eyes through the mirror, a sweet smile appeared on their faces accompanied by a slight redness on their cheeks.
Of all the moments they spent together, that proximity was definitely their favourite.
The atmosphere was light and cheerful around the two as they ate what they had ordered.
There was a light in the bar that made the girl in front of him look even more beautiful and unreal.
“Are you excited about the qualifiers?”
The girl’s voice brought him back to reality. She sipped her cappuccino while waiting for his answer.
“Of course, we won’t lose. We’ll go to nationals.”
Iwaizumi’s answer made her look up to meet his beautiful green eyes. It was the same answer Hinata would give, or Kageyama, that’s when she realized her heart would break anyway. Because both her friends and the boy in front of her could have lost.
A sweet smile illuminated her face “let’s give our best then”
Iwaizumi smiled in turn, promising that regardless of the outcome of the matches, he would not drive that girl away.
And without realizing it, he shook hands and they just stood there, chatting and laughing until the last sip of coffee.

Y/n knew perfectly that she could not keep her promise. That’s what she said every time Kuroo and Kenma went to visit her and she would punctually end up weeping.
Even if it was only three hours of travel, that distance was atrocious for her. She wanted to spend the days with her friends, but obviously things don’t always go the way you want.
She took her bag and came out of the room ready to greet those boys she had grown fond of in no time.
“Y/NNNN” Bokuto’s voice came loud and clear, rumbling in the school halls and in the girl’s ears. The captain of the Fukurodani was already in tears as he ran against his new friend.
To everyone’s huge surprise, Bokuto and Y/n had managed to make a strange friendship that made them look like friends for years and not a few months.
“Bokutoo don’t make it so hard for me!” The girl’s scolding seemed more like a plea. Her shiny eyes ready to weeping sweet tears of farewell.
Bokuto smiled and took the bag from her shoulder and then began to accompany her out where the others were waiting for her.
“Akaashi and Kuroo said we’ll come see you as soon as we can.”
Y/n looked at him smiling. She was touched by all the affection and care that Bokuto had towards her despite knowing each other recently.
She smiled and nodded “I’m counting on it.”
As soon as they left school they found themselves with the others, ready to say goodbye.
“My team is looking forward to playing against you again,” she added.
Y/n walked away from Bokuto and then approached his Nekoma friends. Huge mistake.
“Are you made of Copper and Tellurium?” Obviously Kuroo’s jokes could not be missing. Waiting for an answer to his, obvious, rhetorical question Y/n raised eyebrows urging him to speak.
“Because you’re CuTe”
The funniest thing? The eyebrow movement. His boldness made them even more fun, but he’ll never know.
“If only I could say goodbye to everyone but you,” she smiled as she embraced that giant nerd.
“Yes, of course. You could never.”
Kuroo gave her a wink and then left her to Kenma, who immediately hugged her.
“I’ll never get used to it, you know?” the girl asked referring to all this closeness from the boy, not that she was complaining.
“Neither did I.” Kenma smiled and went away to say goodbye to Shoyo who was as perky as usual.
“MY LITTLE LEV LOVE COME AND SEE ME SOMETIMES” cried the girl when the youngest lifted her up in the air, holding her in a hug and smashing her ribs.
“COUNT ON IT Y/N-CHAN!” He smiled and put her on the ground.
At first Y/n wanted to kick Lev for underestimating Hinata, but she immediately changed her mind when she saw him play and spoke to him for the first time. It’s a half-Russian, taller version of Hinata, two babies.
Akaashi timidly approached her and twisted her hair. A gesture he had learned to be Y/n’s favorite, if done with affection and delicacy.
The girl smiled and with the index finger of her left hand pricked a cheek making him blush.
“If Bokuto tries to hug me I swear I’ll come after you” provoked her with a little smile.
Y/n teased him at her turn, rolling her eyes and said, “So dramatic.”
“No one ever died for a hug.”
“You got close, though” Akaashi thought back to the first hug Bokuto gave Y/n as soon as she got to camp. The girl turned her nose.
“Damn, you’re right.”
With a little laugh, Akaashi once more twisted the girl’s hair before leaving her in Bokuto’s clutches.
Bokuto was waiting for her with his hands on his hips and a smirk on his face. Y/n had to admit that even just standing still, Bokuto emanated a really comfortable aura… and even a slight comic aura, but maybe it was better to keep it to herself.
“Y/N-CHAAAN! I hope you enjoyed this week!" The captain of the Furukodani shouted, stunning the girl who was stuck in a lethal embrace.
The youngest laughed and then nodded and gave a big smile, one of those she always gave to her friends when she was happy.
"I hope to be able to spend more moments like this! Thanks for everything Bokuto-chan!” she said trying to free herself from the strange embrace of the boy.
It was a rather hilarious scene seen from the outside. Bokuto squeezing to death a poor girl who couldn’t stop laughing at the situation, while Kuroo and Daichi tried to free her to get her on the bus.
Once on the bus, Y/n lowered the window to say goodbye one last time to her friends.

As soon as she read the message, without waiting for an answer from her friends, she rushed to the door. She couldn’t believe they traveled two hours just to get to Miyagi.
“HEY HEY HEYY!!”
As soon as she opened the door, she was literally lifted into the air by Bokuto.
“Bokutowsj” was the smallest among the laughs as she was suffocated by the ACE.
“Akaashii!” I squeaked Y/N as soon as the lift appeared in his view.
“Y/nie” he smiled at her in turn, embracing her. “How are you?”
“It couldn’t get any better,” the girl exclaimed to say goodbye to Kenma, who in response had almost brought down his console.
“It’s good to see you too, Y/n,” he muttered, trying to finish the level.
“The best for last after all” smiled the captain of the Nekoma when the girl approached him.
“Of course not,” the girl rolled her eyes.
Kuroo laughed and then held on to the girl.
“So? did you like the surprise?” rhetorically the raven asked.
“A lot” laughed the girl lifting her face from the chest of the oldest, giving him a big smile.
- during the night out, Tanaka saw the lovestruck gaze Iwaizumi had every time he looked at Y/n. It was the same gaze he had when he sees Kiyoko. (so Iwa is Tanaka and Noya approved)
“I had fun today!” cried the girl swinging their hands.
The smile on her face was so beautiful and contagious that Iwaizumi couldn’t the light heat on his cheeks. At this point he was sure. He wanted her to be his girlfriend and couldn’t wait anymore.
“Me too” he answered with a little chuckle as he drew the girl close to him.
“We should do it again”
“definitely”
And in that moment Iwaizumi took all the courage he had in his body and made a move. “Next time will be different” he started making Y/n confused in the meanwhile.
“Different? why?”
“Cause I’ll hope that you will consider the next time like a couple’s date…” He swear at himself for letting the sentence end so poorly and insecure.
Y/n smiled after a moment of <y/n.exe has stopped working>
“You’ve just asked me to be your girlfriend?”
he laughed at the confused and surprised expression on the girl face “I definitely did, yeah”.
he started caressing y/n’s hand with his thumb while his mesmerizing green eyes looked at her with so much adoration, “so? what did you say?”
For a moment the girl stopped breathing. He was so sweet and handsome, too perfect to be real. And there he was, asking her to be his girlfriend.
“I will gladly be you girlfriend, Hajime Iwaizumi” she smiled rising on her tips to let a little kiss on his nose.
“I couldn’t be happier Y/n Y/l/n”
and like that he gave her a kiss on her forehead while with his free hand stroked her cheek.
y/n, across the room, saw Iwaizumi leaning against the wall trying not to get too noticed.
She smiled to herself before warning Yachi that she had to go and say hello to someone and that she would come back soon.
Her heart went so strong that she feared it would explode as soon as she arrived in front of Iwaizumi. But her heart stopped when their eyes crossed and he came up to her with that beautiful smile of his.
“Hey” whispered the ace leaving a small kiss on Y/n’s forehead, who responded in turn with a small smile and a feeble “hello” too busy enjoying the moment and the comforting scents of the boy.
“How are you?” they asked at the same time, laughing as soon as they looked each other in the eye.
“You go first” told him the girl while she was still holding on his jacket and he was caressing her cheekbone.
Iwaizumi chuckled before speaking, a little frown on his face “I’m sorry if I didn’t called you yesterday… I wasn’t- I wasn’t really in the mood and then I- I thought that maybe you were too tired-”
He was stopped by Y/n’s hand on his jawline and he could feel his heart melt under her sweet gaze. He could almost hear Oikawa call him a simp for her, and he was 100% on for it.
The girl smiled at him, trying to calm him down succeeding “hey it’s okay. You don’t- you don’t have to explain to me. I don’t want to force you to talk to me when you’re not in the mood. I’m just happy knowing that you’re better now… or at least it look like- it look like you’re better, I don’t know are-are you okay now?”
She was so nervous, so afraid to say the wrong thing and make him suffer again. When she was nervous, her brain struggled to formulate cohesive thoughts and he seems to have noticed the care in her words.
He ruffled her hair with so much adoration before smiling “I am okay now, not entirely, but it’s just matter of time.”
“OH MY GOD! please tell me I didn’t miss the first kiss!”
y/n walked away from the boy who in turn raised his head swearing slightly. Iwaizumi was planning Oikawa’s death in a meticulous way in that moment.
“Hi Oikawa-san!”
y/n greeted AobaJohsai’s captain with a small smile, a little courtesy and a little embarrassed.
Oikawa on the other hand felt guilty for ruining their moment, but could not resist the temptation to poking at his best friend.
“I think I should go,” the manager announced slightly embarrassedly.
she turned slightly crossing Iwaizumi’s eyes, she did not want to leave but had to be present for her friends. She wouldn’t have missed this game for anything in the world.
“see you Hajime-kun” smiled and then winked and headed for the door, greeting Oikawa with a wave of the hand and a polite smile.
She was so embarrassed, and as soon as the game was over she had to tell Noya and Tanaka.
Iwaizumi was still standing there trying to put his mind in order. Too bad that the presence of Oikawa and his mockery did not help at all.
“I have to admit, you two are really cute together.” Oikawa decided to break the silence between the two, while watching the game closely.
As soon as they got to the gym where Seijoh was still facing Date Tech, Y/n started to have a lot of thoughts. They were two very strong teams and whoever won would have given Karasuno a run for their money.
Y/n watched the two teams attack and defend themselves while her right leg plotted quickly from nervousness. Sugawara, noticing the girl’s nervousness, took her hand and sqeezed slightly.
“exited to see your boyfriend play?” he winked at her, trying to cheer her up, in his own way of course.
Y/n took a short look at him and then returned to watch the game. “I’ll kill you.” she said dry, trying to hide a little smile and the slight redness on her cheeks.
She watched the field carefully and, without realizing it, her gaze fell on Seijoh’s ace who, as every time, was giving his all. Y/n couldn’t hide the adoration she felt for that boy, he was an exceptional ace whi was going to give everyone in the field a run for their money.
“come on boys” she muttered unconsciously, chewing on the inside of her cheek.
Although those three words were murmured, they came to Suga’s ears who smiled at himself. That girl was really in love but too naive to know.
Ready to hit, Iwaizumi lifted his eyes for a few seconds, before seeing a highly familiar head of hair. A small smile appeared on his face and when their looks crossed, he nodded a little before beating and making a direct ACE.
Y/n smiled unconsciously holding Suga’s hand.
“Y/nie, he dedicated it to you!” exclamed Nishinoya leaning on the shoulder of his friend attracting the attention of a couple of people, including Karasuno players.
“Noya I’ll kill you, STOP IT!” cried the girl embarrassed and frustrated pulling an Libero’s ear making him laugh.
“NISHINOYA STOP BOTHERING Y/N!”
On hearing Daichi’s voice, the girl breathed a sigh of relief, byt when she turned to thank him she blushed to the capitan’s smug grin.
“Stop it, her boyfriend might get jealous.” He then added Tanaka with a sneer as he watched his best friend slowly sink into the chair.
as soon as Aoba Joshai made the final point of the game against Date Tech, Y/n released Suga’s hand, which she had held throughout the game, and released a sigh of relief. To say that she was happy with Seijoh’s victory was to say little, but at the same time she was also worried.
During the minutes of rest they had allowed Aoba Joshai to rest before the game against Karasuno, Y/n decided to go to the bathroom to rinse her face a bit and calm her nerves.
She was so mind-boggling, she didn’t realize the person who turned the corner and slammed into her.
“Oh sorry I didn’t mean… Iwaizumi?”
the girl’s voice was reduced to a whisper when she pronounced the name of the dark-haired man who looked at her equally surprised but with a small smile on his face.
“Apparently we always have to face each other like thus during matches” he joked trying to break the awkward moment, succeeding.
“Will you tell me again that I am too loud and a crybaby?” joked the girl crossing her arms to her chest with a little laugh that made him smile even more.
Iwaizumi responded in a way that caught the smallest girl unawares.
“Actually, I thought I’d invite you on a date at the end of qualifying.”
Y/n stood still before him with her eyes wide open and a slight redness on her cheeks as she tried to assimilate the words of the ace and to formulate a sentence of complete meaning, failing.
Iwaizumi, having to return to the gym for the warm-up, was the first ti break the silence.
“then I’ll see you after qualifying.”
and with some determined but slow movements, almost as if he was afraid to break her, Iwaizumi approached her leaving a kiss on the cheek and then he walked away towards the gym while Y/n was there, still and with a smile on her face and her heart racing.
The world seemed to stop as soon as the ball hit the ground, in the field of Aoba Joshai, giving the last point to the Karasuno who incredulous were shaken by the whistle of the referee before cheering as loud as they could.
On the other hand, in the fans of Karasuno, while big sister Saeko embraced bit Yachi and Y/n, sweet tears filled the eyes of the latter, happiness mixed with sadness and other thousand emotions all together.
She was so proud of her boys and the fact that they finally has their revenge, but at the same time her heart was broken when she saw Iwaizumi, on the other side of the field, with his head down.
Her body reacted before she could even assess the options or reactions of the people around her.
She ran down the stairs, as if her life depended on that race, she did not think abkut what she would do when she arrived in the field, Y/n had no idea what she was doing or at least until her (color eyes) eyes crossed the green ones of the boy.
In two seconds she found herself in his arms, her face in the hollow of his neck and hus forhead against her shoulder. She knew hiw difficult it was, he remembers Asahi’s empty gaze and his trembling voice when she called him that night.
“You must not doubt even a second of your abilities, you’re an exceptional ace and your teammates know it. So don’t dwell on it too much, okay?”
Iwaizumi shook his head and tightened the girl’s T-shirt, bringing her even more close to him if possible.
“I want to stay like this forever” whispered the boy, his voice muffled by Y/n’s hair but clear enough to make her blush and hide her face even more in his chest. So focused on calming her heartbeat that she didn’t realize the little kiss that Iwaizumi left on her temple.
They loosened the hug slowly, and upon seeing hus red eyes, Y/n couldn’t help but caress his cheek to remove one last tear and smile at him.
“Thank you so much… for everything” thanked the ace repeating the same action of the girl just before, picking up a small tear and making her blush slightly.
“I think it’s time to go… your team will be waiting for you” whispered the girl slightly away to give him space.
“Yeah, even your team will be waiting for you to celebrate. Don’t keep them waiting.” He responded smiling and striking her hand with his thumb.
Y/n smiled, nodding “making them wait was worth it, there was someone who needed a hug more” replied, swinging their still-woven hands.
“I’ll contact you as soon as I get home” Iwaizumi greeted her by holding her hand tightly and smiling at her, then moving away towards the exit.
Y/n reviewed all the choices made in her life as soon as she turned around and saw the looks her friends were gaving her.
“shut up and let me hug you idiots” she muttered red in the face as she approached them for a huge group hug.

Kuroo’s finger hovered over the call button. He hadn’t really thought about what he would actually say to you. He wasn’t even sure he would be able to handle looking at you without breaking down. He knew that he had messed up. He had let his own insecurities lead him down a dark road of overthinking, and when the path had completely enveloped him in darkness he had rejected the light you offered in favor of finding his own way out.
He didn’t want to lose you even though he was the one who had been pushing you away for weeks. He knew that he didn’t deserve you, but he wanted to try to make things right.
Taking a deep breath he let his finger fall, pressing the call button. Your image flickered into view on the screen. Your eyes were red and puffy, your hair disheveled. You looked like you hadn’t slept in days. His words caught in his throat as he looked at you. You had your eyes averted, looking out away from the camera, away from him.
“I’m an idiot YN” he breathes, trying to hold back the tears he could feel prickling at the corners of his eyes. You were a mess and it was his fault, and it broke his heart to see you like this. You scoffed, agreeing with his obvious statement but remaining quiet. “I failed at the easiest and most important part of relationship- communication. I let myself get overwhelmed and instead of relying on you to help me through it I pushed you away.”
He paused, settling back on his bed as he decided what he wanted to say next. “School was always easy for me. As long as I put in a little effort I could accomplish anything with ease. Realizing that college wasn’t like that was unsettling. I had to work harder this past semester than I did in all three years of high school. I struggled to balance my course load. I struggled to find time for my family, my friends, for you. I was overwhelmed by the small amount of time I could find to spend with you. Watching you only made me feel worse.”
He watched as your eyebrows scrunched together at his words, an uneasy frown forming on your face. “Everything you do looks effortless. The way you appear to perfectly balance school work, family, friends, me. Watching you work your way through the semester seemingly worry free heightened my own insecurities. I felt like I was falling behind, and that feeling naturally escalated into worrying that I was also holding you back. So I pushed you away, not wanting to be the reason why you didn’t reach as far as you could go.”
He took a deep shaky breath, feeling his emotions surging up within him. “I am sorry that I failed you YN. I’m sorry that I pushed you away instead of letting you support me. I’m sorry that I didn’t just talk to you when I started to feel this way.”
There was wetness on his cheeks, he reached up feeling the tears fall from his eyes. He had his gaze averted, staring at this ceiling instead of at you. He wiped at his eyes, frustrated that he was breaking down in the middle of his apology. Finally, he turned his gaze back to you, watching the tears roll from your (e/c) eyes. “Most importantly I am sorry that I hurt you.”
Kuroo listened as you choked out a sob, burying your face in your arm as you pulled your knees to your chest. You had dropped your phone, so he could only listen to you cry as he stared at his ceiling. He sat with tears rolling freely from his own eyes. How he wished you were here. He would have pulled you into his arms to comfort you. Instead, you were a world away, alone in your friends apartment.
He felt like the shittiest person to walk this earth.
When you stopped crying he quickly wiped his face, removing his own tears before you picked up your phone. “What do you want from me Tetsu?”
“I want you to be with me” he answered instinctively. He huffed out a breath, running his fingers through his hair. “Let me rephrase that. I know I don’t deserve it, but would you consider giving me time to fix things between us?”
He watched as your eyes searched his face before you laid your head sideways across your knees looking out into the room. “I’m staying in Argentina for a while, I’m not sure when I’ll be back.” Your eyes focused on him again. “But, if you want, you can pick me up from the airport. We still have a lot to talk about, and I’m not promising you anything, but I still feel the same about you today as I did a week ago. I am absolutely hurting, but I still want you Tetsu. I want to make this work.”
He let out the breath he had been holding, relief flooding through his veins. Things may not be perfect but you weren’t going to give up on him and that was all that mattered to him. “Just let me know what time your plane will arrive and I will be there.”
He watched as you stood, stretching out in that familiar lazy way. “I’m going to hang up the call now Tetsu. We will talk again when I get back.” He nodded, eyes never leaving yours as your image flickered off the screen. One week, Kuroo thought, one week to get my shit together so that I don’t lose you.
Your brief vacation in Argentina paired with the long layovers between your flights back to Tokyo gave you time to think about everything that had happened between you and Kuroo.
When your flight landed you were glad to see that he was waiting for you. “Hello” you said awkwardly as you approached him. He was fidgeting, you could see him struggling with the uncertainty of how he was supposed to act. There were to many questions still lingering in the air. Too many issues that needed resolved, but you had missed him.
He may be an idiot, and he may suck at communicating with you, but he was your idiot. You stepped forwards, laying your forehead against his shoulder. He tentatively wrapped his arms around your back. The two of you stood there for a few minutes, then you stepped back. “Let’s order food and go to my apartment. I’m pretty tired.”
You walked side by side and took a cab to your apartment. You had barely sat your belongings down in your room when a loud knock came at the front door. Kuroo collected the take out from the delivery person while you grabbed a quick shower and changed into clean, comfortable clothes. The two of you sat on your couch, eating. He asked you about Argentina, listening intently as you told him the details of your stay there. An awkward silence fell over the room after you had finished eating. You were exhausted, but you knew that if you didn’t have this conversation now it would only make you both feel worse.
“I thought a lot about the things you said on the call last week Tetsu. I have a lot to say and I ask that you let me get it all out before you speak. Will you listen to what I have to say?” He nods, turning on the couch to face you so that you have his full attention. You drew in a deep breath, this was going to be a long talk.
“Growing up with my barely there mother I relied on Iwaizumi and Oikawa and their families a lot. They are more my family than my own mother is at this point. I watched the two of them push themselves fully into everything they did, especially volleyball. I mimicked that commitment and it easily became second nature for me to push myself too hard.”
“For all the times Iwaizumi and I have had to yell at Oikawa for overextending himself, they’ve probably had to do the same for me double that amount. A lot of the classes we took in school were easy for me, yes. Even now a lot of the classes I am enrolled in are not as difficult as I would like them to be. A lot of that comes naturally to me. I love to learn, it’s just part of who I am.” You paused, taking a moment to realign your thoughts.
“My biggest fault, as Oikawa says, is that I am too willing to push myself beyond my limits for the people I care about. No, this semester wasn’t as rough for me as it was for you. But I pulled an obnoxious amount of late nights, sometimes running on only three or four hours of sleep a day. I pushed myself to study hard and get all of my work done quicker so that I would have time to spend with you and everyone else.”
You ran your hands through your hair. “I am sorry, Tetsu, if I unintentionally made you feel as if you weren’t good enough for me. You are so smart, so hardworking, kind, funny, and just incredible overall. The fact that you are struggling will never change my opinion of you. I am your partner and I am here to help you when you feel as though you are sinking.”
You scoot forward, pressing your hand to his chest. “I want to be with you. I want you to rely on me and talk to me when you are stuck. I want the good and the bad, because I love you Tetsu.”
His eyes are watery with unshed tears as you reach up to cup his cheek. “I am not going anywhere, but you have to trust me. If you can’t put the same faith in me that I have in you, this will never work. Can you believe in and rely on me Tetsu?”
Tears are falling down his cheeks now. You don’t move, waiting for him to gather his thoughts and reply.”I am an idiot,” he starts, “but I want nothing more in this world than to be your idiot. I cant promise that I won’t make mistakes, but I want you there to put me in my place. I want you by my side through my struggles. Watching you believe in me pushes me to believe in myself. I need you with me.”
You pull him against you, letting him cry as you rub soothing circles across his shoulder blades. When he calms down, he pulls back, his hands coming up to grip your face.
“I will be better for you. I love you so much kitten.”
You press your lips against his, a soft kiss at first, but the longing for him quickly deepens the kiss. You kiss hungrily, all of the emotions the two of you have been holding back for the past weeks seeping into the movement of your lips. You kiss until your movements become lazy.
“Will you stay the night with me?” You breathe your question against his lips, your forehead pressed against his. You hold your breath as you wait for his response.
“I would love to stay with you YN.”
The two of you retreat into your bedroom. You lay on the bed, your chest resting above his heart, eyes drooping sleepily. “We will make it work Tetsu, we just have to work together.” He presses a kiss to the top of your head, his fingers tracing patterns against your arm and across the small of your back.
