Google really is just useless now, huh

I search for something on Google.  The first 2 pages are sales links.  The rest of the results are nonsense because Google decided to replace my keywords with “synonyms” or “similar terms” that are basically the opposite of what I was trying to search for.  I contemplate setting my laptop on fire and pulling out the typewriter.

I had this experience just the other day it was ENRAGING

So, there’s a bunch of commands you can use for Google if it starts acting up. The best ones are -thing and “thing” If you notice dumb synonyms in your query get rid of it with Minus, and put quotes around the exact thing that NEEDS to be in the search results. You can also bypass this by using the Advanced search which does the exact same thing, but we’re busy people and we don’t have time for that shit.

I know about search syntax. I also remember a time when I was able to find useful information without spending an extra 5 minutes peppering my query with it literally every time I want to use the service.

Yeah. I’m legitimately very good at research and in the last five years Google has gotten steadily worse with a big drop about two years ago, and if you’re trying to find older information (say you want data on how masking impacted flu rates in Japan in 2009) you are basically screwed because its novelty weighting had gotten so much stronger.

Not to mention that a lot of search syntax does not work anymore. I can type in the same string of words in quotations on Google and on Bing; Bing will get me what I actually want, Google will claim it doesn’t exist. Bing is better than Google at finding the stuff I want.

could you IMAGINE if jobs asked to see your tumblr ajsjskksksks the url alone is enough to disqualify half of you hoes let alone your blog descriptions

Put your LinkedIn profile AND ONLY YOUR LINKEDIN PROFILE on your resume and if they ask for social media information refer them to your resume.  “Oh I’ve listed my relevant social media pages on my resume”

IF they ask for your twitter, facebook, or Instagram specifically tell them you’re not presently active on any of those accounts.  “Currently I’m not an active user of those sites”

Make sure you use pseudonyms on twitter and insta, don’t tag co-workers, and keep your facebook private.  Ask your friends not to tag you in their pictures either.

Never discuss work on your social media, never refer to your job by name, never tag your location when your going to/from work, and never ever discuss any difficulties with your job online.  Doing so will only ensure you get fired.

For the record, though- if you get consequences at work because of venting over social media, and you belong to a union, TELL THEM. The NLRB had the position that you should not be fired for venting online, and on that note, it’s yet another great reason to push for unionization- freedom of speech online without fear of occupational backlash. Some states also have laws that broaden what you’re allowed to say without fear of termination, so check your state legislature.

[Image Description: tumblr reply from user hxlianthuus. It says “employers will ask for your Insta, fb, and twitter, but who asks for your tumblr????? no one” End ID]

Fun fact: lots of applicant tracking systems pull your accounts from your email and phone number.

For the love of god, create a job application email. DO NOT use a personal email, especially not one that has silly words in them.

I also recommend a separate phone number, so they can’t trace your FB account.

hate being the generation that remembers no ads on YouTube & the annoyance when we first saw 1 ad every 10 videos, then 1 every 5 videos, then on every video, then multiple ads within a single video, only for YouTube to market paying for Premium™️ to ‘get rid of ads!’ which weren’t even there at the start

I hate being the generation that remembers when I could easily find episodes of anime and whole ass movies on YouTube.

Hate being the generation that remembers when YouTube videos would buffer when you pause them, allowing the entire video to load and let you watch it without interruption even on slow connections.

Read all the great books. Read all the great poetry. See all the great films. Fill your life with metaphors. And then explode.”

when the capitalists die out either thru global warming or revolution will we be able to start homegrown internet

been reading about dual power and how to grow my own tomatoes and i’m wondering how and if we’ll be able to start commie internet lol

like obviously the internet is this huge electric capitalist controlled hardware infrastructure thing so after all that shuts down is there a way to do it ourselves lol

i want to come home from a hard day on the communal allotment, kiss my Wife, crank up my generator, and start sharing meams!

GOOD NEWS: the homegrown commie internet is in the works! Across the world, people fighting against censorship and for a more democratic internet are building mesh networks (meshnets) of long-range wifi (LoRa)

Since wifi is just a standard for sending data through radio waves, and radio waves can go a pretty long way if you use ‘em right, it’s not that difficult to connect two computers by wifi from across town. Then you just keep adding more computers to the network and you’ve got internet!

Small antennae, like for connecting across the neighborhood, can literally be built out of trash

image

And a larger, more accurate one can be built pretty cheap too

image

(You can also reuse an old satellite TV dish, or really anything else that’s roughly parabolic)

There are LoRa meshnets in places like New York, India, and all over Europe: Spain (pictured below), Greece,Austria,Germany, etc

image

As for sharing fresh mëmês, the network to go to is Scuttlebutt. Unlike most social media, Scuttlebutt posts are stored on your computer and sent directly to your friends’ computers (rather than being stored on the cloud and sent to a central server). It works just fine over traditional internet, but you can also view and interact with it offline, and it has protocols for connecting over any means that two computers can share information - that includes LoRa, as well as hardwired connections, sneakernet (basically mailing a USB stick back and forth), etc

What that means is you always know that your info is just as safe as the network it’s sent on and the computer that receives it - no one even theoretically has the ability to collect and sell it all. And, since it’s all run on your computer, there’s no servers to go down or companies to go out of business that could destroy the whole thing

You can read more about this kind of stuff here(orhere if it’s cloudy in Barcelona)!

there’s also the work being done by the DCPT, left-behind Detroiters meshing together their neighborhoods to share overpriced high-speed connections among the community and producing these good good educational documents, especially this rad resource page. building meshnets to share a global uplink is very similar to building meshnets for the purpose of intracommunication and these resources are useful in both cases

I’ve had a couple people ask about how to join/organize something like this, which is great! The best list of active projects I know of is here, though you should also do a search online if you don’t see one in your area in case they missed it. For those without a nearby group, put a pin here and try contacting nearby pins as well - you can use the instructions on buildyourowninter.net as well as the DCPT’s resources as linked above to get set up!

Please reblog this version so others can get involved!

Heres your reminder to use literally anything but chrome

And here’s your reminder that Firefox actively works to protect your privacy and prevent tracking.

Firefox also has “Facebook fence” which is used to contain Facebook into isolated tabs that prevent tracking as you browse, since so many sites have social media plugins/ads that help collect data for Facebook and other apps.

You can tell Firefox to fence in Facebook in the browser preferences. Also a good time to change your search engine to DuckDuckGo and leave Google search behind (or only use it with another browser that’s separate from daily use).

The EFF (OP of the tweet) has various types of privacy tools that they’ve created. Some are browser plugins. I recommend going to their site to learn more about internet privacy and advocacy (and donating a few bucks if you can spare it). https://www.eff.org/pages/tools

donaldtrumpispresidentdealwithit:

This man was once the darling of the leftists (and small-government, privacy-minded libertarians who still like him). When he rightly exposed the criminal corruption of the Bush administration and awakened people who were unaware of the death and destruction being signed off on their behalf in Iraq and Afghanistan, Democrats championed him.

When he exposed Putin’s dirty laundry, the media largely ignored it.

But, when he exposed the corruption of the Democratic Party with emails given to him ultimately through Seth Rich, the Democrats started incorrectly calling him a “Russian agent.”

This man has sacrificed so much of his own life’s happiest moments to give everyone more transparency in a world full of duplicitous, deceitful governments.

Now, his Internet access has once again been cut off. It has been 1 month.

Never forget the role Wikileaks has played in exposing corruption.

Not once have they ever lost a court case against their many enemies.

Why? Because they vet their sources and the information they put out.

They don’t publish lies. They don’t defame. They don’t risk their solid reputation.

That makes them very powerful in a way no authoritarian regime can ever be.

Protect WikiLeaks and Julian Assange.

(For those who might shoo in with the “rape and malesting allegations” Assange was accused of - these were dropped.)
