Scaliger Castle is situated in the lakeside area of Sirmione. In the Lombardy area of the Province of Brescia, Sirmione is a villa and community. Sirmione is located on a little peninsula in the southern part of Lake Garda, a lovely historic site. Scaliger Castle, including a very unusually fortified port, is one of the best examples of Medieval fortifications.

In the first half of the 13th century Sirmione entered the possession of the Scaliger tribe. The castle is thought to have been founded by Mastino I della Scala. The city remained a major military center until the 16th century. Until the 19th century, a garrison existed in the building. Sirmione was part of the Kingdom of Venice from 1405 until 1797 when it was acquired by Austria. Later in 1888, Sirmione joined Unified Italy.

The sinking castle Rocca Scaligera di Sirmione was built in the 13th century and used by the Scaliger family as a port fortress. The castle overlooks the town and has a large fosil, in which ducks and swans can now be seen. The tower is visible to the public. The walls are followed by 150 steps.

Once established as Garda, Sirmione was the prestigious summer resort Verona during the first century BC. The town grew into one of the most important Roman towns in northeastern Italy and Garda had been praised by several artists and poets of that time, among whom Catullus.

The city was an important fortress, which was built during the 4th and 5th centuries A.D to defend the southern part of the sea. Even after the conquest of the Lombards, the territory was settled and the king was directly responsible. The town church and convent had been built by Ansa, King Desiderius’ aunt.

The majestic city of San Gimignano, with its walls from the 13th century, sits amid the sun-drenched Sienese hills of the Val d'Elsa. It is Tuscany, which most visitors enjoy, in the fields of gold barley, vineyards, ancient villages; it is the Chianti Tuscany and the Orcia Valley, with the heritage of favorite cuisines and special tastes. “Creative human imagination, a work that is remarkable in testimony to a culture of the past and which, as an extraordinary illustration, demonstrates a dynamic architecture as well as a landscape that reflects significant facets of human existence.” A visit to San Gimignano is a total absorption into the borgo environment of the 1300s; indeed, the area, still intact today, is, in planning and organisation, one of the best examples of the European municipality (mainly urban feudal systems) of the Middle Ages.

San Gimignano ’s ultimate characteristic – which is seen from distance by almost all tourists – is its stunning and unmistakable towers which look out over the scene. So everyone has a past of their own. The town has had an period of economic wealth and artistic prosperity, particularly in the middle of the 1300s thanks to the merchants and pilgrims who traveled along Via Francigena.
During this time, even, the city ’s key families faced challenges in constructing the highest tower, attempting to show who had the most influence.
The Torre Comunale, also known as La Rognosa, became the way to avoid potential towers growing higher. This type of Feudal Keeping pace with the-Joneses. No other tower of San Gimignano will surpass the tower of La Rognosa according to official decree. In 1300, the 70 wealthy families living in this region were symbolized by 70 towers. Only 13 still stand today. Today.

She undertook an architectural reconstruction process, which included the expansion of the walls, the building of various palaces, churches and monasteries in the vicinity of the Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo, and their decoration with exalted works of art in the same century.
Indeed, great Sienese artists actually came to San Gimignano at night to create the gems the world would still see. They were Simone Martini, Memmi and Bartolo Taddeo. Awesome religious, civic and military structures create an attractive skyline while the fruits of the country, saffron and vernaccia, make San Gimignano one of the most important epochs in human history, while you enjoy the best of life and nature.

Little Venice collage

The first three days of our stay were rather cold, foggy and gloomy. However, on day 4 the weather finally had heard our pleas and got a lot better. It was still very cold, but much more bearable than the days before.
We thought that we’d escape the big tourist masses during wintertime but the week between christmas and new year’s seems to be just as bad when it comes to mass tourism. But it is understandable, seeing how pretty Venice is!

I hope you all have a nice weekend and happy new year!
