Currently Reading: 24th November

Today I am doing a currently reading post, as I haven’t updated you in a while.

I’ve been behind on my reading in the last few weeks. I have four books left to read to complete my yearly target. So I am getting there!
My audible subscription renewed recently and I got Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. I think the lady voicing is the same that did Panic too!

PANIC is now streaming on Prime Video.

And the album is available everywhere. Links to your favorite digital services here.

It’s got some blistering electronic work by me and Isabella Summers (of Florence and the Machine), and a brand new song by Tate McRae.

Turn it up.

Panic by Lauren Oliver

3/5 stars

Panic is a game created by the bored teenagers of a small town. The day after graduations seniors enter into this dangerous game, competing in increasingly dangerous challenges to win the pot, which increases every year (this year it’s $62,000). Heather and Dodge both enter Panic for very different reasons it’s their stories we following.

OverallPanic was a pretty enjoyable read, fairly fast paced and I read it within 2 days. I liked main character Heather, but I found myself more interested in her story outside of Panic than the challenges themselves. I wish there would’ve been more focus on Heather and her relationships, both with her sister and best friend Bishop. The story with Nat and Dodge seemed pretty pointless to me, other than to be used to assist the over plot of the game.

The scariest part aboutPanic is not the challenges presented, but that something like this could be reality. I’ve seen some reviewers cry out that it’s completely unrealistic, but I disagree. A bored teenager will do stupid things, they’ll especially do stupid things if large amounts of money is involved. My main concern is this book will give teens ideas, especially considering that the consequences of the game are glossed over almost completely. The ending was way to nice and neat for my taste and I wish it would’ve all been a bit messier. I usually don’t say this, but considering how horrible a game Panic is there should’ve been a real fallout to let teens know “THIS IS A TERRIBLE IDEA”. Oliver failed in this aspect, which is a large part of why I only gave Panic 3 stars despite finding it entertaining overall.
