Looking at these snippets has really brought me back. Amazing how it’s already been four years since I did the first character sketches for Guncats. It’s funny how I’m often surprised by how time flies since I rarely count it as dates but rather as improvement and things I’ve learned.
Seriously though. You should really check out RosakazandSamantha, the amazing people I worked with creating this comic!
This excerpt is from one of my favourite pages of Guncats, and actually the half-a-page for which I did the initial two pages featuring Lan. I needed to figure out quick ways of doing space backgrounds without using photos (because that would’ve been too lazy even for me). And I think the end result is quite nice. Much better than I expected to honest.

The Hazel Wood and its sequel, The Night Country, are stories I almost wish I could experience again for the first time. An exploration of the fairytale underworld, the tales follow Alice, a beleaguered, haunted teenager, as she lives a piece-meal life, constantly moving cross-country with her mom. The duo flees makeshift homes regularly, with bad luck always nipping at their heels.
Though Alice and her mom live modestly, Alice’s grandmother is world-renowned, the author of a sublimely notorious and equally hard-to-find compendium of fairy tales. After receiving word that the estranged grandmother has died, mother and daughter finally settle in NYC, sighing with relief that their bad luck is behind them. Finally, Alice has a chance at a normal life.
But then, Alice’s mom goes missing and all clues point to the grandmother’s mansion, and beyond - to the morbid world of her concocted fairytales, tales that are starting to materialize on the streets of NY.
The Hazel Wood is a gritty Brothers’ Grimm bumming a cigarette, a jaded teenager stuck on the dark side of a NYC daydream, a haunted subway ride. It’s the stuff of nightmares but more gruesome and modern than Grimm. Imbued with young adult emo, it is also surprisingly poetic - much like our teenage years.
The Night Country follows in its footsteps, imagining a world that would make Mary Shelly shiver. Albert’s world is a fanatical escape for these dark times if you want to get away and indulge simultaneously. And for those hungry for more of Albert’s macabre marvels, the actual book of grandmother’s fairytales is slated to be released this winter. A book within a book. How apropos for a tale like this… Just take care you can separate story from reality. Fairytales are, after all, only make believe… aren’t they?
What’s better than being stranded on Mars and abandoned by your crew with only potatoes to live on?
Anything really.
Anything would be better than that.
But if we are talking in terms of Andy Weir’s brilliant first novel The Martian, what would be better that Andy Weir writing the witty and scientifically credible story of one character? That would be Andy Weir creating a witty and scientifically credible story about a whole city on the moon with an awesome no nonsense female protagonist smuggler. Which he did when he wrote Artemis.
Having loved Weir’s writing voice in The Martian, I scooped up Artemis immediately and summarily devoured it. The protagonist, Jazz, a citizen of Artemis, the moon colony, slaves away as a smuggler to save up enough slugs for a better life. Because moon real estate sounds pricier than New York and San Francisco combined. An integral player in the city’s sordid underbelly, Jazz is roped into a scheme by a wealthy benefactor while desperately dodging the ever-watchful moon cop and a new slew of moon mafia. Which, let’s face it, is kinda challenging in a city that’s literally under a bubble. (Note to self: this could be included in the genre: books that effectively employ domes as a device.) Let’s just say that oxygen is at a premium in zero G.
With a seriously diverse cast of characters, an entirely new take on moon landing and a unique pen pal scenario, Artemis is bound to launch to the bestsellers’ list immediately. Pun intended.
Kudos to Weir for introducing a minority female protagonist who is dynamic, intelligent, flawed, and beautiful - and incidentally, like a lot of the awesome dynamic, intelligent, flawed and beautiful female characters in my own life.
Plus, reading Weir is like taking a cool science class as an adult, just in a totally different atmosphere.

I’m enjoying my first real taste of being a stunt person (or maybe even an action hero—I’ve got lines and everything!) working with the amazing folks of Potoo. I’ve always loved the way fight choreography uses physicality as a narrative tool, and I’m incredibly excited to combine two things I love, martial arts and storytelling, on such a professional project.

People be too busy all hyped up on Hannibal, Dexter, and Alastor—don’t get me wrong those two are amazing I saved the best for last, but we need more girls in the center like this: relatable, badass, sexy, both crazyorchill.
With bad guys always in the spotlight, the girls are always the pathetic damsels in distress that you know will get killed off the minute they are on screen, or they end up being the annoying petty bitch that you WISH would get killed off.
Like, yeah, I know we got films like Cruella,Maleficent 1 & 2, Birds of Prey, and whatnot, but I’m talking about more full on series that aren’t always discontinued the few times they are made.
A professional thief renowned for giving her pursuers the slip, Chloe Frazer’s made a career out of misdirection. But her unpredictability doesn’t just make her the best getaway driver in the business, it adds excitement and nuance to the entire ’Uncharted’ series. Voiced with steely wit and easy charm by Claudia Black, Chloe dodges expectations as deftly she does the hazards that stand between her and the exit. [Read more on goodcharacters.blogspot.com]
Sorry, but it’s proper hard to dislike Evangeline Lilly. She can express her characters better with a glance to the side than you and I can with a stage and a loudspeaker. But as much as you totally enjoyed ‘The Hobbit’ or ‘Real Steel’ (yes that happened), don’t forget ‘Lost’. Kate Austen was one of the biggest twists in the first of many twisty seasons, and so conflicted that she gets away with having the most consistent personality on the show. Why is it, that in lots of books the author takes pains in describing the heroine/ female protag as ’ plain’ or not conventionally beautiful but then the fanart/ representation of the character looks like a perfectly proportioned barbie doll?! Are womens feats in literature not enough ?
Its almost like we’re brainwashed in thinking only beautiful women can be successful…sound familiar?
