The Selection by Kiera Cass
1/5 Stars
So I attempted to read Kiera Cass’s The Selection… that didn’t work out so well. The concept seemed okay, even if it was pretty far fetched. The gist is that in the future the monarchy uses it’s version of The Bachelor to determine the next royal princess. Can I just say this is a horrible idea for a governmental structure? Like why would you use a lottery to give someone power and sovereignty? Doesn’t make sense to me at all.
However powering past the idiocy of this so called monarchy, there were other things that made me put the book down. What really bothered me was the characters reason for entering the lottery. The main character starts out dead set on not entering because she’s in love with someone else. This is a perfectly acceptable reason to not want to compete, though it would’ve been nice had Cass gave her a little more reason beyond a boy. That aside America (who names their main character America? Really?) decides to enter because her boyfriend, who supposedly loves her, emotionally manipulates her into entering. “Oh, I would feel guilty if you didn’t enter." I’m sorry but I would be pretty pissed if my boyfriend told me to enter a contest to marry another man.
For those reasons I stopped reading The Selection. Perhaps it got better as the book progressed, but I was too annoyed by the first 50 pages to even bother continuing.
The greatest love story ever!
Break my heart. Break it a thousand times if you like. It was only ever yours to break anyway.
