Hi folks!

I quit my burger flipping’ job, which means I’m back to having less money, but more time to dedicate to making art! I’m getting a fresh new batch of wood cookies, time to put some pet portraits on them.

Now offering Natural OR Amber finish!

Check out the listing here, or read on…

About my process:

I grew up surrounded by animals, on my family’s little farm in southern New Hampshire. I currently live with two cats and a parrotlet, and I study falconry here in Maine. I know how animals become a part of the family, how close you grow to them, and how they change you. I make portraits that are as unique as your pet. I spend extra time getting the details right because I know how much they matter.

The wood cookies are salvaged from fallen branches that I find in the woods around my family’s farm. I dry the branch, then slice the cookies on a chop saw, then continue to dry them completely to ensure no cracks will form. Every wood cookie is unique, and vary from 2.5-4 inches in diameter.

When you purchase, you can send me as many photos of the pet that you think are useful. I will use all of the photos to compile an image that I think accurately represents the animal. After doing a few sketches on paper, I will choose a wood cookie that will fit the portrait well, then I will draw a pencil drawing of the animal on to the cookie. At this point I will check in with you, and show you a picture of the drawing, so you can ask for changes or tell me to move forward. Once we move ahead, I will burn the portrait in by hand with an iron. Once that’s complete I will check in again, showing you a picture for approval before I add the finish. If you approve, I will coat the entire cookie in shellac, either natural or amber depending on your choice, and add anything else you selected (like a magnet or eye hook). Then it’s on it’s way to you!

The whole process takes only a couple of days, depending on when you order, what my schedule is and my current workload. The longest part is the sketching at the beginning, when I work to really capture your pet’s spirit!

Portraits are $25. Add a magnet for 50 cents, or an eye hook for $1. I will consider bulk discounts!

Thank you for looking!

It is home
& nothing else. For home is to give
every doorway a human it knows
it cannot keep. That this golden light
is shaved down by a grating heart
of loss—smashed blue in the clay
sun, rhubarb moonlight, loom of a wooden
feeling that you are missing. The ice
cubes of a vodka tonic are melting
by the lake. The moose are still
awaiting your curved arrival.
This week is foggy,
but a kiln is warming somewhere.
There is so much lettuce in the garden.
Here is the Mooselake of summers past
aged to a single piece of beach glass.
Here is the dock to a mourning lake.
This life is blue, and every teary eye a moon
trying to excuse light for leaving
it slivered each day. This is fullness
confused for emptiness. This is the birch
built black bear rotted to a bare truth.
Just name it time.
Just name it love.
You are calling sandwich orders from the stairs
above the water, rattling down the hill in the cart.
This month is but a rattling return.
We ask for you,
but are given an empty dining chair, mosaic squares,
stacked log walls, this day.
Here is the doorway of loss. Here is your house
with all the chairs filled, rocking chairs, rocking.
Here’s everyone who loves you crammed
into the screened porch: smelling of salt bagels,
wet daffodils, bald hearts, trying to find a mountain
road, raspberry smashed ground, a way home to you.
This world is throbbing. This house is full.
There are many doorways
and we are all moving through.

Episode 8 #Genocide from my YouTube docu-series Armenian American. April 24 is the day we remember 1.5 Million Armenians who were systematically slaughtered by the Turks, including my great great grandfather who had his head chopped off and his body dragged around the city for everyone to see as they took out all the community leaders and walked the helpless women, children, and elderly across the Syrian desert to die. You are gone but not forgotten and we are still fighting for the day where America officially recognizes this atrocity as a Genocide ⚫️ .

SAYING GOODBYE TO MICHELLE. AN ANGEL LEFT US.

It is with a deep and incredible sadness that we share the news that one of our longtime members of the KD family, Michelle Profant, passed away last night around 8:45 PM.

Michelle was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer that metastasized into her bones and lungs. At the time she was diagnosed last summer, the doctors had given her 3 to 6 months to live. Despite rounds of chemo treatment and periods where it looked as though the cancer might be minimizing, in the end, the battle was too much for her body to withstand. We knew the end was near when she let us know recently she’d be going into hospice care.

We can’t even put into words how profoundly heartbreaking this news is to us and I know many of you who know and love Michelle as we do, will find this news just as devastating.

Michelle applied to foster with KD and joined our rescue on June 3rd, 2013. In that time she has had a hand in saving countless lives. The kitties she pulled from safety at Devore for Kitty Devore Rescue and KD Rescue partners alone total 311 kitties.Additionally, she has fostered many kitties along the way, too. She’s attended adoption events, helped out other foster parents by picking up their kitties and getting them to the vet when they could not, transported short and long distances…we could go on and on. Michelle is one of the members who has helped make KD the force for good that it has become. She is one of the people we considered to be the heart of this team and we’re sure we’re not alone in that feeling.

In 2014, when Kitty Devore Rescue hit hard times financially and was struggling to meet the needs of the kitties in our care, Michelle, without letting KD administrators or other members know, wrote to Examiner journalist, Sharon Gilbert, to plead KD’s plight. The article Sharon wrote brought in new fosters and donors that enabled us to continue the good fight for the kitties of Devore.

Michelle was known for her amazing sense of humor, her giving spirit, her kindness, her generosity, her willingness to do whatever needed to be done on behalf of the kitties in need without complaint, with a happy heart and with a generosity of time, energy and spirit unlike any other. As a KD member, she never engaged in gossip or badmouthing anyone. She was truly in it for the kitties 100% of the way.

When a kitty didn’t get saved, it was Michelle who always reminded us we needed to do better, try harder, find a little more space by saying at the conclusion of a daily rescue thread, “And nobody came…” This single statement reminded each of us why we were all here - to be there for each kitty at Devore we had committed ourselves to save.

In June, when she became aware her time was limited, she asked KD to care for her kitties and, within a few days, we had secured alternate placements for not only all the fosters she’d still had in her care but also many of her adopted kitties, too. We wanted to be sure Michelle was able to ease her heart and mind, knowing her kitties would all be safe and secure, so she could focus on the battle ahead.

Last night, when her longtime friend and fellow KD member, Michelle Johnson, contacted us to let us know of her passing, the entire KD membership grieved and we will continue to do so because the loss of the force of nature she was is heartbreaking to all of us. However, we know Michelle is now at the Rainbow Bridge, greeting all the kitties and pups who will make that journey and will be assuring each one they are safe and loved.

Rest in peace, Michelle. We love you. We always will. You are and will continue to be so greatly missed by all who knew you.

Michelle leaves behind her husband, Steven Horine, her mother, Gerda Profant, several former Devore kitties that Steven and Michelle opted to keep as well as numerous family members and even more friends who loved her dearly.

Rest In Peace, Michael. You left way too soon. ❤️
