Saw “The Lodge” again tonight after less than a week. There were some things I needed to see again, not from a film making perspective, but from a processing trauma/ psychological perspective.

Spoilers for “The Lodge” from this point on.

The movie is about a family bringing in a new woman/ step mother after the original father and mother divorce, and the mother completes suicide in a very violent way due to not being able to deal with the finalizing of the divorce and the new woman marrying her ex husband.

The kids, mastermind a plot of revenge against the new woman by depriving her of her medications, which keep her mental health in check as she has a very traumatic and religious past. The father decides it’s a good idea to leave this woman with his two kids in a remote lodge during the snow storm season while he completes works, with the intent of joining them on Christmas.

The kids’s plan works, and they drive the woman to the point of insanity, triggering all of her past traumas and causing the woman to harm herself and believe that they’re all already dead (in purgatory). Dad returns just in time, as the woman is about to kill the kids, she kills him instead, the kids try to get away, they get caught up and it is implied that they are also killed by the woman.

—-

Through all of this I was rooting for the kids. Even when it was revealed that they were behind all of this (because you don’t find out until near the end that it was actually a masterfully created plan by the kids), that they tortured this woman, that they made her see ghosts and the demons of her past. I was sad that the kids didn’t make it. I wasn’t sad that the dad was killed or that the woman (it’s implied through elements in the story) killed herself as well.

I really had to investigate why this was. I wasn’t ashamed or scared of my position; rather I was surprised.

Growing up, my own dad often sided with a woman who was not at all good for him or me. Unlike the kids in the movie, I never plotted against her (or her daughter) despite the fact that they made my late childhood and teenage years a miserable, living hell; a hell that would see me become homeless, lose all of my belongings, have to repeat the 8th grade because of instability, my dad going to jail twice, moving to the South to escape her, and then doing it all over again because he kept welcoming her back in. Even after /that/ chapter was over, he continued to entertain other women, put them and their families before me to the point where I had to tell my dad off on Christmas one year to which he said “I’m your father” and I said “Then fucking act like it.” (I received a self righteous slap to the face for that, on Christmas day, but it was that day that my position with him was solidified).

It wouldn’t be until long after he got out of jail, for /yet/ something else, that I would begin to let him back into my life; thanks to a talking to by my cousins in Memphis (with whom I was living after college). Right now, we’re fine, but when I do visit, and see that he keeps pictures of certain folks next to pictures of my own mom, I take pause. He has very poor judgement.

So yeah, that’s that. If you see “The Lodge” and you say “FUCK THEM KIDS” I don’t blame you. They do some Home Alone level fuck shit to that woman on a mental, psychological, and religious level. They /really/ mess her up to the point of no return. But I was on their side because I understood the hurt they felt; and ultimately, it was the dad’s fault.

And that movie triggered all of this.

After almost a decade, American Pie is back with a new movie entitled American Reunion. And I’m one of those excited to see this film since I’m really a fan if the American Pie movies. I love how they made the movie poster identical to the first American Pie movie.

(*Spoliers ahead)

But because it has been almost ten years, big changes on our major characters are expected. As you watched on the trailer, Jim and Michelle already have a kid. Kevin looks old in the poster, well he looked that way because he’s a husband now (a house husband) and unfortunately, Vicky is not his wife. I also love what Oz has become actually, well I think it suited him well. And Stifler is still Stifler :)

I loved every scene on the movie, the humor hasn’t changed and I think it doubled. There are so much more in the story. I looked forward seeing what happened to most of East Great Falls’ students and I was satisfied. I know you’ll love it like I did! Expect more laughs.

I really enjoyed every bit of the American Reunion and I think this is the best American Pie movie EVER!

Definitely a must watch! Don’t forget to catch Jim’s transparent-lid-incident. haha!

Here are some pictures from the American Reunion Red Carpet Premiere Night:

Honestly, the first 15 minutes were a bit of a struggle, because I have a hard time with humor based on embarrassment. But once Cage and Pascal come together, their chemistry is amazing and I laughed so hard, I thought I was gonna die.

Another thing: after watching Massive Talent, the last thing I expected was to come away with the thought, “Now I need to watch Paddington 2.”

I saw the Dark Tower last night with all five of us-me being the only one who read the series. (Non spoiler review)
There were fun King fan nods (not gonna tell-YOU find them!) the action was cool-to see some “Gunslinging” on the big screen!
Jake was alright. Idris was alright. Matthew M. was lame.
Apart from the fact I’m a Tower Junkie (I laid it aside. Which is telling already. I knew I had to put high expectations away, did LOTR fans do that? No! We didn’t! The trailers made me cry!)
As just a general audience movie buff, this movie lacked vision, story, character development (why do I care?) and world building. 95 minutes just is not enough time to do anything right.
Unless it’s a cartoon.
Overall, it wasn’t great. Sorry.
My 12 year old liked it! Meh.

Two by John Huston. The African Queen is a rewatch. What’s remarkable is how full of life the movie is at the beginning, with the missionary work and the dreadful heat that is so communicated throughout. The boat journey is delightful. Huston really could get so much out of just two characters (great actors, of course) who talk and make plans. One of Huston’s very best, and justly counted among the great films.
.
The Unforgiven, from 1960, unfortunately is the opposite. It starts out okay, but we are soon enmeshed in a windswept soap opera of unbelievably oversaturated emotions and overwrought motives. It concerns two families about to intermarry - but Lancaster, the oldest brother, is reluctant to let Hepburn (his sister) marry. He drinks moonshine every time he makes a hard decision. There’s a mysterious horseman about who knows a family secret. Shenanigans happen, the horseman is hanged, uttering the terrible secret. It’s a dramatic moment, but next we see Lancaster and his family trying to drown out the Indian flutes playing across the fields by playing their piano outside. It’s one of the silliest scenes I’ve ever seen in a “serious” film. I could not help but laugh at this MST3K- worthy movie. I rejoiced to find out that Huston hated it.

The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) & The Maltese Falcon (1943)
.
My re-watch of John Huston’s The Maltest Falcon (1941) was my fourth viewing, and each time I see the movie I have a different reaction. In 2002 I liked it, but it was all flash and style and made me feel smart. In 2010 all that had washed away and the pool was too shallow to drink from. In 2014 the film had improved significantly, and I delighted in its breathless filmmaking. Some of that stayed with me on this most recent outing, as I was struck by just how personal a film it must have been for director John Huston and his career, since he also wrote the script. This time it was fun to imagine Huston working behind the camera, like a Christopher Nolan, hard at work putting all the pieces together. Bogart skips around with a devlish smile on his face, playing the fiendish characters against each other in the journey to discover who killed his partner (the henchman play by Elisha Cook Jr was a surprisingly well written part for a “small” role). It’s fun, stylish, a classic for a reason, but nowhere close to the depths of greater classics like Casablanca and Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
.
The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) is one of the very greatest films ever made, coming from someone who thinks Citizen Kane is way up there. But Joan is much, much greater than Kane, delivering heightened spiritual emotions frame-to-frame. I defer further discussion of it to the essay inside the Criterion Collection DVD’s booklet. What’s to be said is better said there than here. The film’s recent-ish soundtrack (1995) is a modern oratorio called “Voices of Light” by Richard Einhorn. Its libretto is compiled expertly from a who’s-who of Medieval women mystics. The music is inspired, an absolute masterpiece which transforms and uplifts its subject even higher, and it works on its own as a Great Musical Work. This was my second viewing of the film.
