I get to photograph a lot of portraits, which I have mostly neglected in this blog of mine. Im going to start posting more and more, with the aim of improving this skill, and reflecting on the many faces of I’ve encountered in the local reality.

Here is an off moment within a portrait session with Arab-Israeli Knesset Member, Ahmad Tibi, at his office in the Israeli Parliament, the Knesset, in Jerusalem, back in November, 2015. Tibi is a member of the Joint List party, a union of Arab political parties that was formed before the last Knesset elections with the goal of together reaching a larger number of parliament seats and beating the electoral threshold. The goal was more than reached, being the second largest party in parliament, sitting in the Opposition.

In honor of #arabamericanheritagemonth we are spotlighting It Girl & Supermodel @gigihadid. She’s gotten a lot of criticism over her supporting her own #Palestinian heritage when #FreePalestine was the most talked about hashtag last year. She said she was made to feel, “I’m too #White to stand up for part of my #Arab heritage.”

We can relate, Gi.

She and her partner #ZaynMalik, who is #English #Irish and #Pakistani, discuss their racial identities regularly, which both consider “important.”

“We think about it and talk about it a lot as partners and it’s something that’s really important to us, but it’s also something that we first experienced ourselves. Because both of our parents are their own heritage. We are that #firstgeneration of those #mixedraces, and then that comes with that first generational experience of being like: ‘Oh damn, I’m the bridge!‘”

Growing up half Palestinian through her father Mohamed Hadia and half #Dutch through her mother Yolanda, her #mixedrace identity has been a push and pull. “You go through life trying to figure out where you fit in racially. Is what I am, or what I have, enough to do what I feel is right? But then, also, is that taking advantage of the privilege of having the whiteness within me, right? Am I allowed to speak for this side of me, or is that speaking on something that I don’t experience enough to know?”

She and Zayn have one child together, a daughter named Khai Hadid Malik. “She’ll grow up feeling out the way that she can or wants to be a bridge for her different ethnicities. It’s up to her. What comes from her is what I’m most excited about, and being able to add to that or answer her questions about our heritage and history.” #wcw #gigihadid #mixedgirl
