ODEX II (AKA ‘Robin’) by Odetics inc (1986), Anaheim, California. The ODEX II with an extendable arm was developed for Savannah River Nuclear Labs. Robots are used in the nuclear industry as they can be used in radioactive environments, and as a hexapod walking machine it can step over obstacles, enabling it to work in cluttered areas. Odetics robot technology can be used to fight fires in nuclear facilities and clean up nuclear, biological, and other dangerous waste.

This looks both cool and terrifying.

The ODEX I (1983) developed by Steve Bartholet was far more terrifying and had a very 'War of The Worlds"-esque vibe to it. I love it through and through.

I found a fairly cool video of it in action as well.

We are talking about potentially life saving information. Remember where the battery pack is placed. Today it is easily detected and removed, but when modified for patrolling the streets of your city, it will most likely be concealed and protected by a plate.

These violent delights have violent ends.

In HBO’s Westworld, human-like robots populate a theme park where human guests can have violent, gory adventures in the Wild West without the repercussions. The robots are so lifelike that they fool the visitors and themselves. They bleed, die, grieve, and love—thinking themselves human.

“The human mind is not some golden benchmark glimmering on a green and distant hill,” park owner Robert Ford at one point tells his colleague Bernard, whose robotic nature remains unknown even to himself for much of the first season. Ford is convinced that there’s nothing special about human consciousness that marks the difference between a robot’s mind and ours. But as Westworld’s robots grow increasingly independent of their repetitive, programmed loops, the show incites viewers to question whether AI can truly be autonomous or conscious—and who in this story deserves empathy.

When welcome to night vale said: Sleep heavily and know that I am here with you. The past is gone, and cannot harm you anymore. And while the future is fast coming for you, it always flinches first, and settles in as the gentle present. This now, this us, we can cope with that. We can do this together you and I.

RIP Grant Imahara. Mythbusters was a big part of my life growing up and it still inspires me to find the science in the world around me, and to find the fun within the science. It’ll be a while before I stop crying
