Necklace

India (Punjab or Rajasthan), Mughal, 18th - 19th century

Gold, precious and semi-precious stones and pearls

Pictorial representations and literary accounts of jewelry from the Mughal era abound, for the wearing and appreciation of jewels and gems was considered an art in itself. The memoirs of Jahangir, for instance, record his decisions to wear certain pearls or rubies for important occasions, but the practice was not limited to royalty alone—travelers to India noted the quantity of jewelry worn by all members of society. Because very few of these pieces survive, most seventeenth-century jewelry is known only from paintings and written descriptions; extant pieces from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are much more numerous. This particular necklace, composed of diamonds, rubies, pearls, and imitation emeralds set in gold, might represent work for a new class of patrons, the British in India.

18 karat yellow gold or white gold and is set with nearly 36 carats of various gems. The 484 invisible baguette-set stones on the watch evoke the seven shades of the rainbow’s spectrum. Among them are rubies, amethysts, topaz, and tsavorites, as well as pink, yellow and orange sapphires.

I give you the Heroes’ Tears version of the Phoenix! Comprised of the elements of fire and air, you would be wise not to piss this large, raptor-like bird off.

We used a Philippine Eagle as a base for this one, with some obvious changes. Fiery feathers of mostly oranges and reds allow this majestic creature to fly through the air and swoop down upon his prey. Or just spit fire at them from a distance. The cardinal red version of the mineral corundum (commonly known as ruby) make up his beak and talons. Also, the purple accent feathers made for a beautiful touch, I think!

I really enjoyed designing this monstrous bird, and there will be more monsters and creatures to come!

In process of working on a Kylo Ren helmet. Using a child-sized Rubies helmet as a base. It came as two pieces, so I’m glueing the seams with rubber cement and then going to go in with bondo on the outside seam to fill in the cracks. Going to need a lot of sanding!

Gilded Glamour

The theme of this year’s Met Gala and accompanying exhibition is ‘In America: An Anthology of Fashion’ which apparently means they are taking inspiration from the Gilded Age (∼1870-1900) in the United States. According to the invitations, the dress code is 'gilded glamour, white tie.’ We usually see at least a couple of tiaras at the Met Gala but this year I’m hoping for a lot of them!

Tiaras were very popular for wealthy women in the Gilded Age which I love because most people think that tiaras are just for royalty and that is not true at all. The trouble is that non-royal tiaras are so much more difficult to find information about than their royal counterparts and I’m always on a mission for info into American tiaras. Here’s a few Gilded Age tiaras to get us exited!

Mary-Louise Hungerford MacKay’s Trefoil Arabesque Tiara by Boucheron, 1889

Alva Smith Vanderbilt’s Pearl Tiara by Boucheron, 1890

Julia Kemp’s Diamond Tiara by Tiffany & Co., 1894

Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney’s Diamond Tiara by Boucheron, 1896

Cornelia Sherman Martin’s Diamond Flame Tiara, before 1897

JP Morgan’s Diamond Winged Tiara by Cartier, 1901 (I’m assuming he bought this for someone else and wasn’t just wearing it around the house but you never know)

Lila Vanderbilt Sloane Field’s Diamond Tiara by Cartier, 1902

Mary Morgan Burn’s Ruby Tiara by Boucheron, 1903

Harry Payne Whitney’s Wreath Tiara by Cartier (I assume he bought this for his wife, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, but his sister-in-law, Gladys Vanderbilt Széchenyi, was photographed wearing a very similar tiara in all diamonds)

Mary Scott Townsend’s Diamond Tiara by Cartier, 1905
