Apollo-era Launch Complex 39 captured from orbit on eve of Apollo 11 golden anniversary (July 10, 2019).

Maxar Technologies’ WorldView-3 satellite captured these views of Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39 Monday, July 8.

Both Apollo-era launch pads are now home to different launch vehicles. SpaceX launches their Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets from LC-39A as well as their Crew Dragon spacecraft. The company hung a giant American flag from their Crew Access Arm in commemoration of the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, which departed for the moon from that very pad.

The transporter/erector strongback that the rockets are assembled and transported to the pad on can be seen in the horizontal position adjacent to the service tower.

NASA will utilize LC-39B for their Space Launch System, which WorldView-3 captured with the SLS Mobile Launch atop it. The ML was moved from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the pad last week for a final series of validation checks before hosting the first SLS flight in early 2021.

WorldView-3 was roughly 380 miles above the earth when it captured these images.

5 Questions for a Scientist: Glaciologist Kelly Brunt

Occupation: Associate Research Scientist
Institution: NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and University of Maryland
Field:Glaciology
Focus:Remote sensing of ice shelves and icebergs

Kelly is an Associate Research Scientist with the University of Maryland and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. She has a bachelor’s degree in Geology from Syracuse University, a master’s degree in Geology from the University of Montana, and a Ph.D. in Geophysics from the University of Chicago. She was a postdoctoral scholar at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where she worked on ICESat laser altimetry data, and she is currently part of the ICESat-2 mission, which launched last Saturday, September 15, working on validation of the elevation data. On the weekends in the winter, Kelly coaches alpine ski racing at Liberty Mountain, in southern Pennsylvania.

You can follow both Kelly’s NASA and skiing activity or connect with her on Twitter (@KellyMBrunt).

1. Explain what you do in your work in one sentence (or two).

I am a glaciologist (I study ice sheets) and I am part of NASA’s Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite 2 (ICESat-2) mission. I am specifically tasked with looking at the ice sheets and validating the satellite elevation data products.

2. When did you first become interested in your field?

I have always preferred the winter. Growing up in Connecticut, my extended family liked to ski together and we often took trips to Vermont. The love of winter and snow (and the cold) led me to work in places like Montana, Alaska, and even Antarctica. Working in these places, and wanting to know more about ice, drove me to go back to school for a Ph.D. in geophysics, with an emphasis in glaciology.

ok i think it’s about time for a harry’s house this or that! music for a sushi restaurant or cinema? late night talking or as it was? grapejuice or satellite? daylight or daydreaming? little freak or keep driving? boyfriends or matilda or love of my life?

It’s impossible to sum up how it felt visiting #Chernobyl, but I’ve had a go anyways. It’s one of the most remarkable #travel experiences I’ve ever had. #travelblog #pripyat #ukraine #kiev #travelblogger #reactor4 #darktourism

Early starts aren’t nice. They’re even worse when you wake up in a cold sweat imagining you’re trapped in Chernobyl and history has repeated itself. Thankfully, it became clear that hadn’t happened when I woke up, but it did leave me unable to get back to sleep from about 4am, four hours before my tour began. Perhaps that was my subconscious telling me that I was a little more apprehensive than…

This rising was the turning point of this retrograde drama in my life! I woke up and went outside to relieve myself and right there in front of my eyes in the stream behind the house was a beautiful White Lotus smiling at me It was then that I knew that things would be just fine. That every challenge that comes into my life has a beautiful ending if I can go deep within and get the lessons that I need from the situation without taking things personally. I’m grateful to my challenges for showing up exactly how they did and in this time..when I have the awareness and mindfulness to take action to correct my ways and level up this whole mission up!! ✊LETS GET THIS WERK!

Egyptians viewed the Lotus as a symbol of rebirth and a potent reminder of reincarnation and the mysteries of the afterlife. White lotus flowers are usually seen under the feet of deities like Lakshmi, Ganesha, and Saraswati. Brahma, the ultimate creator, emerges from a Lotus as well. This sense of purity arises from the flower’s growing habit of rooting in mud and pushing up through the water to bloom.

The Buddhist Lotus represents:
• Patience
• Purity
• Mysticism
• Direct Spiritual Contact
• Emptiness from Desire
• Victory over Attachments
• Enlightenment and the Bodhi State
• Love and Compassion for All Things
• Self-Awareness
• Faithfulness During Spiritual Development
• Rising Out of Suffering

Sputnik by jurvetson Released from a Russian museum, it will hang nicely from the rafters at our space museum at work.

Manufactured by the Soviet Academy of Sciences — the group that held responsibility for the general scientific leadership of Sputnik and the supply of research instruments — this full-scale shell measures 2’x7’ long.

Sputnik was the first object placed in orbit, back in the U.S.S.R., October 1957. It was the beep-beep-beep heard round the world. Its radio transmitters provided data on the Earth’s ionosphere and on the structure and temperature of the upper atmosphere. More significantly, its creation ignited the historic Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union. Its radio signal was easily detectable by ham radio enthusiasts (20 and 40 MHz), and the 65° orbital inclination and duration of its orbit made its flight path cover virtually the entire inhabited Earth, proving to all that they had done it. https://flic.kr/p/2mGqvBN
