Is it hard to have your own business? Here’s a secret I’ve never heard anyone else say before:

When you start a business, you are the boss, which means it is exactly as difficult as you decide it is.

“BUT WHAT ABOUT—“ No! I don’t want to hear any victim-based nonsense about responsibilities you *willingly chose* to take on. Yes, challenges and lessons happen. That’s just life, even at a job. But you have free will. You can start an income stream that can be done from your phone at the beach if you want. Deconstruct “professionalism” and skip the stuff you don’t truly agree with. Don’t get sucked in by greed or other people’s opinions. You can use your creativity to build something that is perfect for you, and you can decide to keep it very simple.

I’ve tried many different strategies since I quit my last job in 2004. I promise you—more difficulty does not equal more money! It often means less!

You don’t have to choose a business that you think will be hard. You don’t have to quit your job and go all in. You don’t have to take an expensive course. You don’t have to go into debt and then have that pressure to deal with. You don’t have to start something that even requires capital at all.

You could take something you ALREADY DO and share it in a way that produces income. You could take something you love, and use empathy to see how it could help others.

I once did a year-long experiment where I didn’t do ANYTHING for money that I wasn’t already willing to do for free. My income went up! Not because of any lucky coincidence, but because what I love doing has value in the world. Because following your inspiration has power. And when you’re focused on inspired action, it never feels like work.

The key here is to use integrity, inspiration, and compassion—first for yourself, then all others involved in your work, whether clients or collaborators. Don’t push yourself beyond what feels compassionate. Don’t believe the bullshit about things needing to be hard. Don’t copy from other people. Don’t try to trick or scam people.

Love yourself, love what you do, and share that love.

This is not part of a sales funnel. I don’t have anything I want you to buy from me. I just want to see a freer world for us all.

Hello hive mind - I’m currently writing my MA thesis on the gig economy and polymathic freelancers in the creative industries. Basically, I’m looking to interview freelancers (ideally London/UK-based) who are multi-talented, and work in a diverse set of creative disciplines… such as a writer/illustrator/animator etc. Perhaps you have had an interesting portfolio career, or you’ve created a unique job role/business that combines all your skill-set and interests.

If this sounds like you or someone you may know, I’d LOVE a brief chat about your experiences over email/phone/Skype/person, whichever suits best.

Contact me here, or email me: [email protected]

Thank you very much!

Little-Known Tax Tips for Small-Business Owners

Attax time, small businesses look for ways to save money and maximize credits and deductions. “One of the most overlooked ways for small businesses to save at tax time starts at the beginning of each tax year,” advises David Ayoub, CPA in Syracuse, N.Y. “It’s simple. Keep every receipt. Find a way to corral all the loose receipts lying around your desk, in your purse and in your car. They can add up to a lot of deductions.” Another easy and often overlooked deduction is the cash transactions that many small businesses do. “Keep track of everything in a log,” adds Ayoub. Common Tax Deductions for Construction Workers

Regardless of your trade in the construction industry, allowable tax deductions can lower your tax liability and possibly lead to getting a tax refund. You can deduct common expenses such as tools and materials, and even certain other items that come in handy in your business or on the job.

If you’re an employee for a construction company, rather than an independent contractor, and your employer doesn’t reimburse you for expenses on the job, your unreimbursed employee expenses are no longer deductible. Independent contractors generally have no limit on the ability to deduct work related expenses. See the full TurboTax article for details so you can plan ahead.

Tax Tips for Freelance Writers and Self-Published Authors

If you earn money selling your words to websites and other publishers, the Internal Revenue Service will likely say you’re a small business owner. Freelance income is self-employment income, and so are any royalties you receive for that book you published or self-published. That can be a good thing, because the self-employed are privy to some tax perks that employees don’t usually receive. To learn more, see the full TurboTax article.

Tax Tips for Bloggers

Blogging is a relatively new profession, but it’s covered by the same tax laws that apply to many other occupations. The main danger from a tax perspective is that, as a self-employed blogger, your taxes won’t be automatically withheld from your earnings, as is typical with traditional employees. Additionally, you’ll owe self-employment taxes that most employees don’t pay. However, you may be able to take advantage of certain deductions to reduce your tax bill. See the full TurboTax article for details.
