Frank Dicksee was a prominent EnglishVictorian painterandillustrator. The son of Thomas Francis Dicksee, a noted painter of Shakespearean characters, he is best known for his pictures of dramatic literary, historical, and legendary scenes. He also was a noted painter of portraits of fashionable women, which helped to bring him success in his own time.

His style was not fully within other popular modes of the time, such as Pre-RaphaelismorNeoclassicism, and can be seen as a fusion of various methods and aesthetics of his time, including later in life utilising post-Romantic techniques such as lighter brushwork and softer shades.

Why do we save things?  And what do we keep?

I admire people who can let go of things without hesitating.️ My husband & I both packrats, but I think we’re driven by different reasons. We recycle, ♻️ but keep a lot, too

It seems like saving possessions boils down to reasons like:

Necessity
Usefulness
Sentiment
Value
You “might” need it someday
You’re a hoarder!

Sometimes it doesn’t make sense to save things because space is limited. As my friend Suzanne used to say, “If in doubt, throw it out.” When she moved from Seattle to Portland, she gave me her Christmas ornaments. She told me she wouldn’t need them. (She never bought another Christmas tree.)

In the US,  people sometimes downsize & have less space when they move to a new home️. So all the extra stuff that won’t fit in their new place goes into a storage unit. I wasn’t surprised to learn more than 10% of households in the US rent a storage unit. We know a lot of people who have them.

Is renting a place to store your extra belongings a worldwide trend? Here, the average storage unit costs $89/mo. (79e / 10,285y).

Our youngest son moved in with us during the pandemic & has since moved out, but he left behind a bunch of his bags,  boxes & belongings! We also have things that belong to our older son who moved out in 2002! ‍‍‍

I’m a fine one to talk. My sister lives in our childhood home & I moved out decades ago. There are still boxes of MY stuff in the basement!

Many things I keep because they have sentimental value. ♥️ My husband is more of the “I might need this someday” school of thought. ‍♀️ I admit, he’s proven time & again the logic of keeping things that we’ve ended up needing.

Marie Kondo asks the question, “Does an object spark joy?”

Are you a hoarder? What are the reasons you save things you don’t use or need? ‍♂️

Clara Luciani - Dors

I don’t understand how people quit or don’t like band. It’s literally one of the best things that’s ever happened to me, and it hurts that my friends are leaving.

It may seem stupid that I’m getting so emotional about something that I still have so many years, and so many opportunities still, as freshman year is ending.

I’m going to be a section leader next year and it scares me that I might forget how to have fun and let loose in band, especially when so many of my friends are leaving it next year.

I just want to make the most of it while I’m here, and it’s hard to think a whole year went by like that.

There’s two things that my band director says before every game, when we’re lining up in parade block and it’s something that I think everyone should hear.

  • What makes a band successful? Every single person does their absolute best, all the time.
  • Remember who you are, remember who you represent, remember who you want to be.

And some of you may take it as just some stupid band thing, but you have to look past your section, past the band, past the people around you in order to really believe it. You have to look at yourself and tell yourself who you are and who you want to be to make it come true, to do your absolute best all the time.

And this may be why band is so important to me but it really is a family, as stupid as that may sound.

“Off and on is what we want

What we want is off and on

Friend of a friend you used to call

Friend of a friend you used

Friend of a friend you used

You used to call

I couldn’t believe that’s where they found us

When you and me, when the wild us

Taken alone, it isn’t harmless

Shouldn’t we keep it as a promise?”

Sentí humillación, me sentí una burla, me sentí odiada. ¿Por qué me odian? No les he hecho nada malo.
