Pentacle / Pentangle / Pentagram
Symbolizes the figure of man with outstretched arms and legs; the integral personality; the human microcosm.
Being endless, the pentacle takes on the significance, power and perfection of the circle.
Its five points are spirit, air, fire, water, earth.
With SALVS at the points it represents health and the five senses.
Like the circle, it has the power of binding evil powers and elementals, hence it denotes good luck.
In Christianity, it stands for the five wounds of Christ and was the emblem of Sir Gawain, painted on his shield.
In witchcraft the inverted pentacle depicts the Devil’s Goat and the witch’s foot.
Inverted, it is also a sign of the reversal of man’s true nature.

Gaheris: Not that I’m complaining, but Mordred just walked up and punched Ywaine in the kidney.
Gawain: Huh. Has he stopped swinging yet?
Gaheris: Sort of. He’s kicking him now.
Gawain: Any explanation?
Gaheris: Dunno. Something about promises.
Gawain: Oh, yeah. You should probably stop him before we’ve got a corpse on our hands.

Gaheris: Whatever. I guess I can cut in.

Have a Gawain watercolour sketch …
I’m finding joy in drawing again (I didn’t for a while) and I’ve been tinkering with my basic watercolour set - it’s a 12-pigment Winsor & Newton Cotman set of which I’m replacing the student-grade paints with artist-grade ones as they run out. I hope to gain some confidence with these… (Some 20 years after I bought my first watercolour set, some confidence would be nice, no?)
I’m actually thinking of doing the next two pages of the comic in watercolour, just for fun. Still pondering if that would be a good idea or a bad one.
