Tarzan was a national obsession in Israel in the 50s and 60s. At one point, 10 competing, Hebrew language, bootleg Tarzan series were on the stands from a variety of not entirely legal pulp publishers. Among other things, in Israel, Tarzan became a foremost expert on monsters like mummies and wolfmen, who was frequently consulted for his monster expertise by Mossad. He also opposed “wicked rich Arabs” as well (depictions that a modern reader may find in poor taste), and in one novel, Tarzan even caught and hunted Rudolf Eichmann, a story so popular it got a sequel where Eichmann escapes, and Tarzan has to track him to Egypt.

In a few later Hebrew language bootleg novels, Tarzan came to the aid of the revolution of Biafra, Southern Nigeria, an overseas revolution which had enormous popular sympathy in Israel in the 60s, and was depicted very romantically in the media of the time. Biafra was a fascinating conflict because it had some very wild sides. The Soviet Union, Israel, and France supported one side, the Biafra separatists, but the UK, Red China, and Nasser’s Egypt supported the other, the Nigerian government.

Interestingly, I haven’t been able to find much information about these online, but at the same time, Tarzan was enormously popular in Syria and Lebanon. According to the Pulp Encyclopedia and Eli Eshed, a pulp historian of the mid-east, they featured Tarzan fighting villainous Jews seeking world domination. Lebanese and Syrian pulps are one of the top things as a collector that I’d most love to find, along with Soviet-era Russian language bootleg Conan the Barbarian novels (remind me to tell you about thosesometime).

Maybe my favorite John Buscema cover, the “new” Avengers, vs the old.

Fun fact: Edgar Rice Burroughs superfan Roy Thomas added Black Panther to the Avengers because he wanted a Tarzan-like jungle hero added to the team. John Buscema wanted Ka-Zar from X-Men (who he worked on previously) but was overruled.

Of all the Tarzan imitators of the 1930s-1940s, the absolute best one was the blonde Ki-Gor. A son of a missionary to Africa raised by a black tribe, his girlfriend was an American aviator who was basically based on Amelia Earhart. He had two black allies, one was a huge Masaai warrior who was given tremendous dignity and heroism by the standards of the era, and the other was a pygmy. The two have a Spock/McCoy teasing friendship. Ki-Gor lasted for 17 years and 59 novels. The later books are better than the earlier ones, though the absolute best is “Stalkers of the Dawn World,” where Ki-Gor saves an expedition from dinosaurs.

It would be a mistake to describe this series as progressive or enlightened, but it certainly is more in line with modern standards than even Tarzan was. The black ally is cool and dignified, and aviatrix Helene is an active part of the stories instead of a victim.

I could read a list of Ki-Gor book titles all day. The titles are out of this world. Here’s a few:

  • Cobra Queen of the Congo Legions
  • The Monkey-Men of Loba-Gola
  • Safari of the Serpent Slaves
  • Slave Brides for the Dawn-Men
  • Tigress of T’Wanbi
  • Blood Priestess of Vig N’Ga
  • Flame Priestess of Carthage
  • The Silver Witch
  • The Beast-Gods of Atlantis
  • The Sword of Sheba
  • Lost Priestess of the Nile
  • Huntress of the Hell-Pack
  • The Monsters of Voodoo Isle
  • The Golden Claws of Raa
  • Warrior-Queen of Attila’s Lost Legion
  • Death Seeks for Congo Treasure
  • Stalkers of the Dawn-World
  • White Cannibal
  • The Golden Beast of Zuli Maen
  • Mad Monster of Mu-Ungu
  • Slave-Caverns of Molundu

Seperated out the Tarzan stuff from my recent sketchbook for closer looks. For the very few people following me that like the Tarzan stuff hahaha.
I totally and utterly goofed on Jane’s hand in the third to last picture. Drew Tarzan’s hand at the wrong andle too dark too early so oop. Oh well. Including a convoluted method for background drawing because my intution is NOT good enough to eyeball it.

Also a couple of these are style studies of Glen Keane sketches. I seldom recommend learning to draw by drawing things other artists have made. Real life or photography are much more consistent teachers. But GK’s character design drawings were meant to be mimicked. Not by me of course… by other Disney animators.. Mimicking other artists is only a good learning tool if you know what specific aspect you’re attempting to capture. For me here (other that just to draw Tarzan fan art) It’s to gain more of an eye for dynamicism and purposeful exaggeration.

No idea why I felt the need to babble on here oof.

The rest of this picture will be some pretty intense background practice but I wanted to pause and smile about the charactera. I always wanted to be able to emulate Disney. I think I’m getting close.

Snow White: So, are you guys getting along with Namaari?

Nancy: Definitely! She is a little hot-headed, but nothing I can’t handle.

Jane: What about your girls and Raya?

Snow White: It’s good! Great!

Nancy:But…?

Snow White: Let’s just say she is a bit impulsive… especially around pretty girls.

Jane: How so?

Snow White: Well… ever since Raya joined us, she already got scamed three times and gave our credit-card informations to a cute barista from the mall.
