LIVE

In the Umbrella Academy comics, Pogo is far from the only chimp to appear. Chimpanzees are regular citizens and live amounts the human population, working jobs like Body the police officer/drummer. This is because Reginald Hargreeves (The Monocle) pioneered the advancement of chimpanzees, earning him a Nobel peace prize. This is amoung his many inventions, and reasons why he is a billionare.

Some of his other inventions include the televator, an invention that makes teleportation between any elevators possible, the mobile umbrella communicator, and the levitator, which the academy uses to fly during missions.

(Spoilers!) In The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite, it is Klaus who stops the apocalypse with his telekenesis. After they failed to stop the suite from finishing their concert, a small chunk of the moon broke away and came crashing toward the earth. But Klaus managed to hold it with his power to move things with his mind and save the city. He is then renowned by the citizens as their hero, and treated like a famous celebrity in volume two.

This strong power of his may be explored in the show due to the interesting suggestion Reginald makes to Klaus in the afterlife. He tells him that he has hardly tapped his potential. This reeks with foreshadowing of this particular ability manifesting itself in the future.

(Spoilers!) In an eight page one-shot Umbrella Academy comic that takes place thirteen years before the first issue when the Hargreeves were teens, Vanya and Diego start a punk rock band called “The Prime 8’s” with a chimpanzee drummer. Then, after getting in a physical fight, they are shut down by their father, Reginald Hargreeves, who makes arrangements to send Vanya away to Paris to study her violin. They agree to perform one last time to make enough money to run away from the academy together, but Diego bails on Vanya that night to go on a mission, leaving her alone at the gig as the group disbands for the last time.

As an interesting little Easter egg, their first song is titled “I Don’t Wanna Kill the President”, which the academy does in Volume Two: Dallas.
