Sleeping With The Enemy - Victoria Chase

Summary: When a drunken kiss ruins things between you and Victoria, you turn to the one person you shouldn’t and Victoria will have to figure out how she really feels about you.

Word Count: 1,060

Warnings: Kinda angsty

It started off simple enough, grabbing a drink with Joy, Victoria and Melanie. You went to the bar alone, and they adopted you into their little group quite quickly. You figured what’s the harm, at least you had some company. But it was a slippery slope into something much bigger, and had you known what would come next, you would have avoided the three of them altogether.

It soon became routine for you to join them, and they let you into their lives as if you’d always been a part of the group. And while you didn’t give it much thought at the time, your crush on Victoria was growing by the day. Realistically, you assumed nothing could or would ever happen between the two of you, and you accepted it well enough. Besides, crushes were merely passing fancies anyhow, and you’d probably be over it in a couple of weeks.

Oh how wrong you were. It was another night out at the bar with them and things progressed as usual. You’d talk, laugh, complain a little perhaps and drink. Typical. But you’d been having a rough week, and you may have gotten a little more carried away than you normally would. And it seemed Victoria was in the same boat. As Melanie and Joy made their way to the door to go home, Victoria lingered behind with you for a moment.

The two of you shared a hug, where in your drunken state you said, “Love you, bye.” And as soon as the words left your mouth, you regretted speaking at all. How stupid. You didn’t even think, but when Victoria let you out of the hug, you were floored that she took your face in her hands and kissed you.

“Goodbye,” she whispered afterwards, and you were stuck in place in a state of utter disbelief. You thought about that moment for the rest of the night until sleep finally washed over you.

You were apprehensive about returning to the bar the following evening, unsure of what Victoria remembered from the night before. You decided you wouldn’t bring it up. When you showed up, only Victoria was there. You didn’t know if that was a good sign or a bad one.

She took your hand when you reached the bar, and your heart fluttered in your chest. “About last night,” she began, and you could tell by her tone that your heart was about to break. You were right. She regretted the kiss. You nodded in reply to her explanation and subsequent apology, but you were unable to speak for fear of breaking down into tears and you stormed out of the bar.

In your haste, you bumped right into a woman trying to come in. You muttered an apology, just wanting to get out of there, but this woman stopped you. When you got a good look at her you realized it was Susan Lucci, Victoria’s biggest rival. You recalled her having said something about the actress showing up in town this week.

You don’t know what made you decide to tell her your story, but you did, despite keeping the details a bit vague. You may have just gotten your heart broken by Victoria, but you weren’t going to tell her nemesis it was her that led you here. And you were doubly surprised at yourself when you accepted her offer of going to a different bar and getting to know one another.

It was a rebound. You came to realize that much by the end of the night. Susan was kind to you, even sweet really, and after your heartbreak, it felt like exactly what you needed. And you really hit it off, which is why you woke up in her hotel room the following morning. You knew this wasn’t something that would last, and you were fine with it, but god it felt good to be with someone who wanted you.

When you showed up at Victoria’s usual haunt later that day, you had mixed feelings. You hadn’t given much thought to seeing Victoria again so soon. You figured you’d have time to reassess your relationship before coming face to face with her again, but Susan quickly made you forget about all that.

You lost yourself in her sweet words, her flirtation, and yet it all came crashing down when Victoria walked in. “Lucci,” you heard, that one word said with such disdain announced her arrival. Suddenly you felt a wave of guilt wash over you. Then you remembered you had nothing to feel guilty for. Victoria had been the one to initiate your kiss, and the one to break your heart. So why did you feel like you were the one in the wrong?

“Victoria, I meant to see you yesterday, but I decided to take in some of the local culture instead.”

“So I see,” Victoria replied through gritted teeth. She then turned her glance to you. “May I have a word,” she asked, trying to calm her voice.

Curious, you let Victoria pull you aside. “I know it’s not my place,” Victoria started, and you huffed your agreement, but let her continue. “But, personal feelings aside, I don’t want you to get hurt. Again.”

“Victoria, I know this thing with Susan isn’t going to last. It was just convenient. She was nice, she flirted, and I just needed to feel like someone cared.”

“I care,” Victoria tried to reason.

“Not the way I wanted you to,” you confessed, though by now how you felt should be fairly obvious.

“That may not entirely be true. While, yes, I was drunk when I kissed you, Joy and Melanie may have convinced me that I shouldn’t have been so hasty in telling you I thought it was a mistake.”

“So, what? Where does this leave us? Did you mean it or not?”

“I did. I’m figuring that out now. You don’t owe me anything, but I’d like to ask you for a second chance.”

After everything, you began to change your mind. You thought you wanted to go back and avoid all of this, but now you just wanted to move forward. You let out a sigh. “You’re a hard woman to say no to, Victoria Chase.”

Victoria smiled. “Now, will you let me gloat to Lucci?”

You laughed. “I suppose that wouldn’t hurt.”

Just got my copy of the Vortex Zine, thank you Nono and Olean over at @vortexzine for the note and for putting this thing together.

My piece is a reference to The Heathers. The polo sticks were a little too much of a reach in my opinion so I went with them posing in a polaroid.

Chasemarsh Monday fanfic recommendation:Band of Misfits by LonesomeBard

Summary: Graduating from college in 1943, with the world-wide conflict still raging on, Victoria Chase is facing a miserable future as a high society housewife, when a stranger approaches her with a life-changing proposal.

My take: A rare and fantastic World War II AU, Band of Misfits is as charming and funny as it is intriguing. The descriptive style and dialogue fit so well for a period piece like this, and I just love Kate Marsh’s characterization as a confident British officer who manages to flummox her haughty comrade Victoria at every turn. This story is in its early stages yet but I can’t wait to see where it goes!
