Littlehampton. William Gwennet.

24 3/8 x 39 1/8 in/62 x 99.5 cm

The serene composure of this fin-de-siècle Englishwoman reflects the lovely holidays on offer around Littlehampton, a tourist harbour town in West Sussex, England, on the English Channel. “Exhilarating and bracing air, with the beautiful River Arun affording good fishing and boating,” and an “extensive sandy beach, with fine common adjoining the promenade and jetty,” are all promised here, along with “Arundel Castle within easy distance,” “Angmering, and its picturesque village,” along with “excellent cricket and lawn tennis grounds. Also golf links.” Train service departs from London Bridge from 9:40am onward. The lady’s pup is expectant.

Western Australia. 1936. Percy Trompf.

24 7/8 x 39 ¾ in./63.3 x 101 cm

In 1936, Shirley Temple was the best-paid actress in Hollywood, so perhaps that was the flash of inspiration that made Percy Trompf turn the Tinseltown flashbulbs on this child of the Outback. Trompf became the most famous poster artist for Australian tourism, delivering bright and cheerful images like these during the depths of the Depression, so that celebratory bouquet the girl is holding ought, rightly, to belong to him – and you too.

Dunkerque. 1929. Roger Broders.

24 ¾ x 39 1/8 in./62.7 x 99.2 cm

The rarest of all Broders posters, it’s also the only image Broders created for the Chemin de Fer du Nord – though the railroad is nowhere to be seen. Instead, he gives us the view from an elegant couple’s yacht, pulling out of the harbor. The contrast between the modern (both people and ships) and the medieval (the spire of the Old Town Hall, the little skiff at right) makes Dunkirk all the more interesting and mysterious.

Available at auction February 25, 2018.

The second of two illustrations celebrating Canada’s national parks, CAPE BRETON HIGHLANDS NATIONAL

The second of two illustrations celebrating Canada’s national parks, CAPE BRETON HIGHLANDS NATIONAL PARK.

I visited this park for the first time this past June, the first time I’d seen Canada’s East Coast. This park is notable for a lot of things – the surprising diversity of its natural features, its changeable weather, the consistency of the tumbled round pink stones along the coastal beach trail – but my favourite was the old trap floats (?) that were used as trail markers.

If you’d like a print, I’ll have them at the Artbreakers Illustration Market in Vancouver this weekend, September 22nd and 23rd at the Main Street Heritage Hall. Entrance is free, and there’ll be loads of extremely talented illustrators there, showing off their work.

In the spirit of “make the thing you want to see,” I’ve made two illustrations each celebrating one of Canada’s National Parks.

Here, the first: PACIFIC RIM NATIONAL PARK RESERVE. Located on the Western Coast of British Columbia’s Vancouver Island, it is 511 square kilometers of serene, rugged beauty. Wikipedia.

Come see this work in person at Vancouver’s Artbreakers Illustration Market - Sept 22-23rd at the Main St Heritage Hall. Entrance is free, and there’ll be loads of extremely talented illustrators there, showing off their work and making prints available for sale.

The Cornish Coast in The Sign of the Ram(1948)

Shot at Lizard Point, Cornwall, England (+ some compositing of the house and lighthouse)

In the establishing shots at the start of the film, Sherida Binyon’s (Phyllis Thaxter) arrival by train to “The Cornish Riviera” is suggested by shots of a fictional rail station called Tremerrion. This sequence includes a real Great Western Railway poster painted by Frank Newbould, which was used to advertise the route from London’s Paddington station to Cornwall. The poster was apparently in use from 1923-1947. Amazingly, this sequence does not have a single shot of a train!

I appreciate the cheekiness of introducing the film’s setting with an idyllic painting of a quaint fishing village shielded by cliffs when that is so far from what The Sign of the Ramdepicts.

Here’s the poster in color:

This particular poster isn’t included on the National Railway Museum’s website, but there are a lot of other wonderful posters featured in their online collection.

Last weekend, my piece was in the art auction at the Silver Millennium Masquerade Ball in Albany, NY. When I was coming up with my concept, I wanted to combine my two favorite things: Sailor Moon and Art Deco travel posters. I had so much fun making this.
