An anon asked me to put some vocabulary lists into text form. This way Dutch learners can understand the context better and practise their Dutch reading skills :)
I want atattoo. When you get a tattoo in atattooshop, the tattoo artist puts a design (that he/she sketched) onto yourskin with atattoomachine. Inside the tattoomachine are needlesthat push the ink into your skin. Ofcourse this is painful. The ink is permanent, it stays there forever.
Ofcourse there are things that you have to think about before getting a tattoo: the design that you want, and to which shop you want to go. Make sure the tattoo-artist that you choose is experienced and works hygienically.
When you know this, you have to think about the placement, the style andthe size. There are different tattoostyles like traditional, neo traditional, black and grey, geometric, Japanese, realism, protraits, … You can also gettexttattooed.
When your tattoo is done, ofcourse you have to let itheal. This requires good aftercare. Your tattoo artist will tell you how your tattoo will heal the best. A new tattoo can itch, bleed a littleand form scabs during the healing process.

눈으로만 보세요.
만지지 마세요.
Took this photo at the Cherry Blossom Festival back in April~ There were some sculptures along the street and they had these signs.
Vocabulary:
- 눈 - eyes
- 보다 - to look, see
- 만지다 - to touch
Grammar:
- ~(으)로 - by way of; this is kind of a tricky grammar point…the way it’s being used in this photo is like ‘look with your eyes’ (눈으로) but it isn’t always translated as ‘with’ for example ‘지하철로 왔어’ could be translated as ‘I took the subway’ or ‘I came by way of the subway’
- ~만 - attaches to nouns to indicate ‘only’ or ‘just’
- ~세요 - polite command verb ending
- ~지 마세요 - polite ‘do not’ command verb ending
This sign is telling people ‘Just look with your eyes. Please do not touch.”
안전구역
고객님의 안전을 위해 CCTV 모니터링을 실시하고 있습니다.
Back with another subway-themed Korean in the Wild post! These signs can be seen on the floor in some areas of some subway platforms.
Vocabulary:
- 안전 - safe(ty)
- 구역 - area, zone
- 고객님 - customer, patron; the ‘님’ makes it more polite
- 모니터링 - monitoring (it’s Konglish)
- 실시하다 - implement, execute; formal way to say ‘to do’
Grammar:
- ~의 - possessive particle
- ~을/를 위해 - expresses ‘for…’ as in ‘for our customer’s safety’
- ~고 있다 - attaches to verb to make it the progressive form (~ing)
- ~습니다 - formal verb ending
This sign is letting people know that this is a “safe zone” (there’s a marked perimeter around the sign) and that the staff is monitoring CCTV for the customer’s safety.
발빠짐 주의
열차와 승강장 사이 넓습니다.
Seen on the subway safety doors (between the platform and train, to stop people from ending up on the subway tracks). If you ride the subway, expect to see & hear “발빠짐 주의” a lot because it’s written on a lot of the doors (as in the photo) and is also part of the little announcement that plays when the doors open.
Vocabulary:
- 발 - foot
- 빠지다 - to fall (into)
- 주의 - caution
- 열차 - train
- 승강장 - platform
- 사이 - gap, space
- 넓다 - to be wide
Grammar:
- ~(으)ㅁ - turns a verb into a noun (nominalization); these nouns are generally considered separate words, rather than variations of the verb i.e. 살다 (to live) becomes 삶 (a life); also used to end sentences in a memo or slang way i.e. 안 함 instead of 안 해요
- ~와/과 - attaches to a noun to add the meaning ‘and’ or ‘with’; use 과 for words ending with a 받침 and 와 for words without
- ~습니다 - formal verb ending
So this sign is warning people to be careful of falling (specifically their feet falling into the gap) because the gap between the train and the platform is wide.
휴대폰 올려놓지 마세요
(분실사고 자주 발생)
Saw this warning sign in a public restroom, above some box on the wall that was perfect for placing a cell phone (and yes, I ignored the sign and put my phone there anyway haha)
- 휴대폰: cell phone (핸드폰 is also common)
- 올려놓다: put on (this is a kind of compound verb)
- -> 올리다: raise, put up, upload (as in “I uploaded/posted a photo to tumblr”)
- -> 놓다: place, lay
- ~지 마세요: attaches to a verb stem to express “don’t do ___”; dropping the “세요” makes it informal
- 분실: loss (as in a lost item)
- 사고: accident
- 자주: frequent(ly)
- 발생: occurence, incident
Don’t place your cell phone [here]. They frequently get lost.
This translation is a bit odd because I think English speakers would instead say something like “don’t forget your belongings”
