One of my favourite things about YJ’98 is that even tho the team totally respected Cissie’s decision for leaving, they always get so excited at just the mere thought of her coming back.
the core four are all best friends yesbut also. tim and cassie are best friends and kon and bart are best friends separatelyof their group dynamic. so much to be said about those two separate bonds within a larger and still very close bond but i am not willing to fail at saying it
Especially that Bart cover. Wowza. Thad, Superboy Prime and Deathstroke are all hanging out menacingly in the corner for pretty obvious reasons. Thad is Bart’s reverse in everyway, he was responsible for Bart’s death and traumatized Bart. Bart tried to sacrifice his life to defeat Superboy Prime. He successfully defeated him but at the cost of Bart’s childhood, powers and his family. Deathstroke shot Bart in the knee to send a message. Bart had to get a prosthetic knee and go through the surgery without any pain killers or sedatives. This event was so traumatizing to Bart that he spent years in speedster time isolating himself and reading every book in an entire library before ultimately deciding to change his entire personality and approach to life to avoid being in a situation like that again. These are villains who have had a profound (and traumatizing) effect on Bart’s life.
On the top you can see Bart as the Flash, Bart as Kid Flash, Bart in his adult Impulse costume from Sins of the Youth and of course, Bart in his classic Impulse costume. All of his different costumes, all at different stages in his life.
Honestly, I know in the first cover Tim is fighting Deathstroke and Bart is fighting Captain Boomerang but it should be the other way around really. Captain Boomerang killed Tim’s dad and Deathstroke shot Bart’s knee out (yeah it was Jericho possessing Deathstroke but the face Bart saw was Deathstroke’s)
I think why that part of Young Justice (2019) was such a flop was because it tried to make Young Justice into a “big tent” type of superhero team, like the Teen Titans is. Like if you asked “who’s in the Teen Titans” it’d probably just be easier to ask “what superheroes that have been a teen at some point haven’t been in the teen Titans.” The Teen Titans has (with a conservative estimation) at least 50+ members across many generations. But if you ask “who’s in young justice” (not counting the TV adaptation) you can count the number of characters with your hands. And if you’re talking about who’s in the “core” of young justice, you can take it down to 4– even 3 (although you probably shouldn’t). I think the difference is that the Teen Titans started as a superhero team but Young Justice just started as 3 friends hanging out. Even when it grew, Young Justice was more of a friend group than a super hero team. That’s why making it into a big superhero team doesn’t really work. It fundamentally misunderstands a core aspect about of Young Justice’s identity. It’s always been “just us.”
