I’ve left a trail of bodies in my wake ten miles wide. I think I’ve said ‘goodbye’ more times than I’ve said ‘hello’ and I’ve said ‘I love you’ a thousand times more than I’ve heard it.
I wish I could write this to you, but I don’t know who ‘you’ is anymore because the list is too long. If you read this, and your heart sinks for a second and says ‘ouch’, that’s the feeling of a pen writing your name somewhere you would rather erase it from.

Because I’ve done it too. I’ve hurt people in the same ways they’ve hurt me. Maybe even you. And there’s something to be learned from that.

It’s a small knob I turn every time it all becomes too much, you see. I don’t keep my face like this— placid, unmoving, disinterested— because I’ve never known heartbreak. My face is this way because it all became too much. I turned the tiny knob, and they were gone. I felt nothing. I think of you and all that comes to mind is question marks. A mind that was full of ‘did she love me?’ and ‘will she ever come back?’ is now full of ‘it doesn’t matter’ and ‘happiness is overrated’.
I tried to get over you by replacing you— a pretty little thing down the street looked at me like i’m every phase of the moon at once. But I felt nothing. I feel nothing. It hurts more than hurting hurts. Feeling nothing is a feeling.

The windshield wipers are going full speed, swishing away sheets of rain falling from the perfectly mute gray sky. “Its about time for all this weather we’re having to stop,” she says. “Hmm,” I say, “I love days like this.” And I remember a line that I wrote long ago, ‘the darkness consumes them, but I thrive in it.’ Because we are all taught to wish for sunny days. The good moments are dictated to us. ‘Here, this is good. Take it.’ Graduate college, celebrate (ignore the crippling debt). Get a corporate position paying a six figure salary, that’s success! Find your trophy wife, have two kids immediately, don’t forget Fido.
We live in a many-colored world but we are trained to only perceive the bright ones. And for that reason, when clouds form over our heads we are lost and can’t find our way out. But the way out isn’t just where the sun shines and the meadowlarks sing, it’s dancing in the rain alone and staring at your bedroom ceiling all night long. Rainy days and late nights contain a special kind of beauty that can’t be found in sunshine. If you embrace the darkness you will find that when you do, there is always light.
