The Sun and the Wayward Wind: A Visual Anthology of New Legends and Lore, 2018

I backed this on Kickstarter, and it doesn’t look like it’s available yet to buy - but when it is, I highly recommend that you do! The link goes to the publisher, so should update when it’s available.

The stories take on local legends, or weave new myths, or tell personal stories that become new fables. Great art and great stories throughout.

Hey. Pssssst! You! Yeah, you. Come here. I have to sweet hook up on all the horror over here. Do you like scary things? No?!
Why not??? Get out of here!! Go read your baby books.
My review of 13 Views of the Suicide Woods is up on Goodreads. Link in my bio. Spoiler: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
In the review, I unpack this collection and highlight my favorites so scoot your buns over there if you want a little more but for this crowd right here, I’ll tell you that I’m a fan of authors that can throw down some Grade A short stories. Bracken MacLeod is a heavy hitter folks. A one-two punch for the KO.
You need to get on this guy. I’m excited I have his latest Come to Dust on my nightstand, thanks @the.nocturnal.readers.box
Hmmm I’m read Zeroes by good ol Chuck Wendig next. I don’t want to squander my horror stack in the summer! Summer isn’t worthy.

Hey friends! Before I start! If you are a backer, please go check out or KS Blog! There are backer exclusive materials that will not be posted on this tumblr.

There’s been few questions regarding when the PDF will be sent out! And here you go, they will be sent out on the 21st for sure. I’m still debating which method would be the most efficient and effective way to send it out to all of you beautiful people. So bear with with me BD

There will be a small announcement before we send out the PDFs either little before or on the 21st to let you know how we’re doing. So please hold off asking us where it is or how we’re getting it until then thank you!! And if you don’t receive anything by the 22nd at 12:01 AM CST please send me a message on kickstarter!! If there is any chance of delay we’ll let you know but I highly doubt it.

Last part of the business is that the PDFs and couple volumes will go on pre-order later this week as a last chance to nab them. So whether you were interested or if you have a friend who was interested but couldn’t get a copy in time, now you can sit them down and let them know this great piece of news. Or you know, sit yourself down and have a god talk.

The prices has gone up for both the PDF and the Anthology as I have forewarned, it is going to be $17 for the PDF only and $50 for the anthology book. There’s very few left from the 500 copies so haha sorry gang, it went up. There’s no shipping for the PDF and the shipping for the book is the same as the KS. $5 for US and $15 for everywhere else. If you buy either, you’ll be considered as a backer so I’ll have to figure out a way to show backers only material that I’ve been posting on KS to the new people somehow.. HM. PDF will be sold without the post card option and the book will have the postcards and PDF included in the price.

It’ll go on sale this THURSDAY on the 13th at 5 PM CST. The PDFs is limitless between then to the 19th, but the books will be first come first served. There are more details about it HereandHere. I hope this clears up any questions and thanks again for being awesome.

Set Your Sights on “Visions,” an Anime Star Wars Anthology Coming This Fall

Enjoy the first trailer, above, for the nine-episode first season, which airs in both Japanese and English languages on Disney’s streaming service on September 22. Seven anime studios handled animation for the episodes:

  • Kamikaze Douga, “The Duel”
  • Geno Studio (Twin Engine), “Lop and Ochō”
  • Studio Colorido (Twin Engine), “Tatooine Rhapsody”
  • TRIGGER, “The Twins” and “The Elder”
  • Kinema Citrus, “The Village Bride”
  • Science Saru, “Akakiri” and “T0-B1”
  • Production I.G., “The Ninth Jedi”

In addition to theimpressive cast lists for both audio versions, StarWars.com shared an excited statement from Lucasfilm VP of Franchise Content & Strategy James Waugh — an executive producer on the project.

“Lucasfilm is partnering with seven of the most talented anime studios in Japan to bring their signature style and unique vision of the Star Wars galaxy to this inspired new series. Their stories showcase the full spectrum of  bold storytelling found across Japanese animation; each told with a freshness and voice that expands our understanding of what a Star Wars story can be, and celebrates a galaxy that has been such an inspiration to so many visionary storytellers.”

Page from Ben’s comic “Neighborhood Witch” collected in the upcoming anthology Who is the Silhouette?

Why were you interested in doing a comic for this book?

Superheroes have always been incredibly open to interpretation. A character originally introduced as a clean-cut defender of justice might later be reimagined by a different writer as a power-mad fascist, only to later be taken back to their more optimistic roots but this time reinterpreted as a new-age messiah figure. When all these interpretations take place in the same continuity, things can get a bit messy. This is part of why I enjoy things like DC’s “Elseworlds” stories or Marvel’s “What If…” that provide the opportunity to take established characters to new, wildly different places, without stepping on the toes of other peoples’ preferred versions of said character. Who is The Silhouette struck me as an extreme form of this idea, and one that I was immediately excited by. The hero is almost a completely blank slate, ready to be taken in any number of directions all at once.

How did you get into comics?

I honestly don’t remember a time I wasn’t into comics. When I was little, my dad and uncle gave me a bunch of comics from their youth, including the first issue of The Avengers and the first appearance of Dr. Doom (A more “serious” collector would probably fly into a rage if they saw the condition that decades of reading and rereading by three different Evans children has left these books in). The one that made the biggest impression on me, however, was a specific issue of Superman that featured the character Vartox. He was a psychic being of 70s machismo, leather, and body hair, who assisted Superman in a handful of adventures and them promptly disappeared, only occasionally showing up in more recent comics. Vartox was different from other superheroes because I had never heard of him. Nobody on the playground pretended to be Vartox. He was weird. He raised questions. When I drew one of my first comics, starring a super-powered version of myself, the Super-Ben wore a Vartox-inspired costume. I’ve been drawing comics ever since.

What are some of the comics that inspire you?

I won’t break any new ground by saying this, but Osamu Tezuka and Jack Kirby are some of my favorites. I’m also a big fan of works of historical fiction like Clockwork Game and Stagger Lee.

Are you a fan of superhero comics? If so, what are a few of your favorites and why?

My current favorite is Astro City. I love its focus on short stories, and how it uses them to explore all sorts of different takes on the superhero genre. I’m also a big fan of Astro Boy and, lest anyone think I only read things with “Astro” in the title, Zot.

Who is your Silhouette?

Gert Walker is a very old woman, much older than she looks. She has lived in the neighborhood for as long as it’s been anything even remotely resembling a neighborhood, though few have paid her enough mind to consider this odd, and those who do keep their mouths shut. In her own way she has been helping the community for quite some time; giving neighborly advice that always seems to be correct, helping the needy simply by being nearby, ensuring that local businesses thrive despite seemingly taking no direct action to do so. Occasionally, she finds it necessary to do more.

How do you describe your work?

I take a lot of inspiration from classic pulp fiction, b-movies, folklore, and history. Regardless of the genre, and whether they are based on a true story or not, my comics seek to highlight the strange and wondrous side of the world we live in.

Any other fun facts, stories or info you’d like to share?

I once badly injured my arm because the trapeze someone had built in the woods out of a gnarled old stick and a length of rope looked safe enough to me.

You can find more of Ben’s work at @benkevans and read the entirety of “Neighborhood Witch” in the anthology Who is the Silhouette? currently funding on Kickstarter!

Why were you interested in doing a comic for this book?

I liked the concept and am a big fan of superheroes! This is my first official anthology that involved a pitch to Kickstarter instead of completed work upfront. So I was on the lookout for a book with a fun concept and an appealing reach towards comic artists.

How did you get into comics?

I’m not quite sure, like many children, I made the habit of reading the comic strips of the newspaper whenever I had the chance. My mother would also occasionally bring us (my sibling and I) Archie Comics and Betty & Veronica to read from the store. After that, it was the comic/graphic novel found here and there, and reading books with comic elements such as including drawings with speech bubbles. One of the best resources was the library! I had an interest in art, so How to Draw books were always searched for and then when I discovered the comic section… Wow! I’d read all the comics that interested me, and then when I finished with those, I read series I normally wouldn’t have picked up. This happened in practically every library and later I found access to ShonenJump and ShojoBeat. Throughout this time, I had a notebook where I drew my own comics. The more I could learn about comics, the more invested I became!

What are some of the comics that inspire you?

Batman, Spiderman, His and Her Circumstances, From Far Away, Noragami, My Hero Academia, etc. and even more shows and movies!

Are you a fan of superhero comics? If so, what are a few of your favorites and why?

Batman and Spiderman are great superheroes although I’ll admit that I don’t read/come across the comics too often. I have read some DeadPool comics and they have been enjoyable. Batman, I enjoy when he has a sympathetic heart which is sometimes missing nowadays and that he is intuitive and skilled. Spiderman is a relatable underdog with impressive acrobatics. My Hero Academia is a great superhero manga that I’m a huge fan for a while now. There is a great sense of optimism in this series and I again, really enjoy a mostly morally infallible underdog hero.

Who is your Silhouette?

UnderShadow is my story here and has a whole entire mythos involving (mostly) magical sidekicks (mascoba) and superhero partnerships! Nori Weston is the Silhouette and her partner, Deso, try to keep the peace with the use of shadows!

How do you describe your work?

The style can fluctuate at times but it can be pretty “sketchy” with a focus on lines or curves with some influence from Bleach and other series. My work tends towards optimism also open to darker themes and ideas. Sometimes too open which leads to indecision but I do enjoy showcasing ideas the inspire the imagination and an open mind!

Any other fun facts, stories or info you’d like to share?

I like Nintendo and like PC gaming (although I’m really eyeing PS4 for Spiderman). I’d like the return of the Hershey’s S'mores Chocolate bar. I’ll also be providing some illustration(s) to the 4th Vol. of the Chubby Anthology!

Why were you interested in doing a comic for this book?

I love superhero comics, and getting a chance to have a crack at a new one is something that got me super excited.

How did you get into comics?

I’ve devoured comics since I was a kid. My favorites were Sonic the Hedgehog and Ghost Rider later on. When New 52 hit, I found out there was a Static Shock comic! (I adored the tv show). After that I was hooked.

What are some of the comics that inspire you?

Jason Aaron’s run on Ghost Rider was amazing to me as a kid. Just next level insanity, really leaning into the craziness of what comics can be. Kimmie66 by Aaron Alexovich was also a comic I checked out from the library time and time again. Its beating emotional heart and amazing setting always drew me in. Chris Hasting’s Dr. Mcninja is also one of my favorite comedy comics of all time, and that was super influential in what comics I wanted to make.

Are you a fan of superhero comics? If so, what are a few of your favorites and why?

Yes, my favorite superhero stories are people who have to deal with awful things, but still do their best to help people. Ghost Rider, Flash Thompson as Venom, sometimes Deadpool. These are the stories I love to read.

Who is your Silhouette?

She’s someone who just wants to live her life, and got dealt an awful hand. It’s not that she doesn’t want to help, she just wishes people didn’t have to need help in the first place.

Page without text from You Can’t Outrun Your Shadows, written by Luz Bianca, illustrated by Mary Anne Mackey and lettered by Julie Gravelle for Who is The Silhouette?

Why were you interested in doing a comic for Who is the Silhouette?

I was actively on the hunt for comic anthologies to submit to, and this one really grabbed me. Not too spoil too much, but certain details in the prompt comic really inspired me. From the beginning onwards I really wanted to play with the idea of secrets and what it means to forget the past.

How did you get into comics?

I didn’t really care about comics at all until I was about fifteen. I used to go to boarding school, and my roommate told me all about several comics she’d read, including Peter David’s X-Factor Investigations. The character of Rictor, a gay, depressed latinx man, really spoke to me, a gay, depressed latinx woman. I picked up the first trade, and the rest is history. I got into writing comics for similar reasons. I want to tell accessible stories about underrepresented people, whether they’re saving the day or not, so I can do for others what Rictor has done for me.

image

Panels from a comic that Luz wrote, titled “Sara”

What are some of the comics that inspire you?

The Sailor Moon manga has been a huge inspiration recently, but whether or not that’s readily apparent in my work to an outside reader is another question altogether!

Are you a fan of superhero comics? If so, what are a few of your favorites and why?

I used to unabashedly adore superhero comics, but as I’ve grown older and heard more about the industry landscape, I can’t say I’m a fan in the same way I used to be. Still, some spectacular stories are out there. Tom King’s Vision is one that immediately comes to mind, along with too many X-Men stories to count (but I have to give a quick shout-out to the Dark Phoenix Saga). I’m also really enjoying Humphrey’s Green Lanterns.

Who is your Silhouette?

Andrea Bloom went missing in her college days. Some rumors connect her to one Mia Yu and an interdimensional lab experiment, but she’s been largely forgotten, swept away with the past. Until now. She’s kind and selfless to the point of self-sacrifice, determined, a bit of a dork, and quite the lesbian.

How do you describe your work?

Ooh, that’s tough. There’s usually a sort of distance from the real. I usually ignore or disregard logical realism, and go more towards emotional realism. If it conveys a feeling, and that feeling lands, I’m doing my job. There’s also almost always lesbians. Take that as you will.
