keith and shiros dynamic when they were younger is so funny to me because all im thinkin is like an 11 year old keith always complaining and whining about kids at school and making obscure references that shiro doesnt know if thats just What The Kids Talk About these days or if it’s just keith being a little weird texan and shiro’s always crying cos he’s only like 18. he doesnt know how to fucking raise any child, let alone one like keith

i really adore shiro and keith’s relationship. it’s such a beautiful depiction of deep, unconditional, familial love. (i have no idea if shiro is actually blood-related to keith or not, but even if he isn’t, you can’t deny that their canonical relationship isn’t rooted in familial love after all that lmao.)

in fact their relationship reminds me a lot of iroh and zuko’s. (i know everyone is high key tired of all the atla comparisons, but hear me out here.)

just as zuko was abandoned by his own immediate family, his uncle entered his life and believed in him when no one else did. iroh knew that zuko had so much potential for goodness and so he never gave up on him. and with iroh’s guidance and unconditional love, zuko eventually grew to embrace and apply his own compassion and empathy, which he had tried to suppress for so long.

similarly, keith was abandoned from a young age. he was alone in the world until shiro showed up. shiro literally tells keith, “i will never give up on you… but more importantly, you can’t give up yourself.” keith’s surprised reaction really shows how alone keith had felt. shiro was the one who vouched for keith to be at the garrison. shiro was the only one who continuously believed in keith – he saw the potential for greatness in keith and never gave up on him. and it’s thanks to shiro’s guidance and his unwavering unconditional love that keith became the leader he is today. 

i’m not really sure where i’m going with this tbh i just wanted to point out some similarities i guess since i loved iroh and zuko’s relationship arc in atla and now i really love shiro and keith’s. honestly, kudos to the avatar + voltron writers for writing profound, meaningful relationships.

shiro got keith to join marching band bc he got into some serious trouble with a physics teacher who agreed to not have him arrested as long as he’s “kept out of trouble by any means possible ” during the summer. that doesn’t stop him from stealing shiro’s car during dinner break, but he does come back with donuts
