darcy’s first proposal he’s like “hello woman who is half an inch away from snapping my neck, i have something to tell you and you have to hear this right now, i musttell you how i feel, sit there and listen as i monologue” and then when he delivers the letter he’s like “i’ll just leave this here, you don’t have to reply if you don’t want to, sorry for bothering you” and then his second proposal he’s like “if you’re still not into it, i promise i will never bring it up again, i’m only here darkening your doorstep because i heard from my aunt that you maybe don’t hate me anymore but if i’m wrong, just say so and i’ll dip, sorry for bothering you again”

ladies, you ever reject a man so hard he learns boundaries for the first time in his life?

| People and Puzzles |

People are like puzzles.

People are not puzzles because they are tough to figure out— no; rather, it is the transformation from shattered fragments to fractured masterpiece that is so similar to the human condition. When a man is born, he is a box of broken and confused pieces dumped out onto the table of existence. He is unsorted, helpless— a mess.

The hands of life and experience slowly bring about a half-done image, a partially completed project that only brings frustration and discouragement to those who glance at it. It’s when the puzzle is nearer to completion that the true worth of its existence is seen.

The beauty of a puzzle does not lie in the perfection of the finished image; rather, the beauty lies in the spiderweb of fractures— the lines, curves, cracks and angles— that show proof of a broken masterpiece brought together.

People are like puzzles. Their true worth is seen in how their broken pieces come together to create the stunning masterpiece that is Healed Humanity.

G, 43k, wangxian, Part 1ofHope

Summary:A night hunt gone wrong leaves Wei Wuxian facing life without a husband and son. He refuses. Using an experimental array, he attempts temporal transmigration, but it goes wrong. He sends himself back to the age of ten, and the strain on his young body and mind requires another desperate use of resentful energy… which also goes wrong. A different sort of time travel fic.

My comments: Oh, wow, I loved this so much! I’m really looking forward to more in the series, because I could happily drown myself in 50k more words of it.

Wwx sends himself back in time, but this story is different, in that once he enters his 10-year-old self (which is pretty traumatic) he ends up with amnesia, so really IS just a child. The chain of events this sets off is fabulous. While he’s in a coma and things are touch-and-go, Madam Yu has an opportunity to examine her poor treatment of this boy in the past and set about making some changes. Because he’s crying out for “Lan Zhan”, the Lans are invited to try to clear away the resentful energy (they think it was cast at him as a curse in an attack), and Lan Qiren brings both his nephews.

The story covers about a season, and POV jumps around, which is wonderful, because everyone is GROWING. They are changing, their worlds are different, and they’re being exposed to different people and different ideas. Madam Yu and Lan Qiren go through perhaps the biggest development arcs, but seriously, EVERYONE is affected. (And none of this is done with a heavy hand, either: the focus is on the story, and the growth is all organic.)

Little Lan Wangji opens up like he never has before, Jiang Yanli starts to learn to be a healer and LQR teachers her musical cultivation… the ripple effect of change is simply fascinating. The Lans become less rigid, and the Jiangs more loving. And young wwx is the nexus and the catalyst. Especially when he ‘remembers’ a few things that make them believe he’s become precognitive.

time travel, fix it, child wei wuxian, madam yu is good, POV multiple, child lan wangji, hurt wei wuxian, sick wei wuxian, angst, amnesia, jiang family feels, caretaking, illness recovery, character growth, (all of them - they are growing and becoming better people), social change, adoption, lan qiren is good, sharing a bed, nightmares, emotional hurt/comfort, hurt/comfort, doting lan wangji, street orphans, gege jiang cheng, didi wei wuxian, jiang wuxian, betrothal, arranged marriage, grief, sect politics, protective madam yu, protective lan wangji, protective everyone, favorite, @rosethornewrites

On the topic of English people being shitheads towards Welsh people - This fucking dude today on AITA

Yeah pretty sure we’re all hoping for a divorce on this one lol

how did this fucker say it’s “not as bad as it sounds” and then somehow end up being even worse than it sounds by the fourth sentence

Further updates, I couldn’t resist looking this one up.

Character development.

His last comment translates from welsh as:

thank you very much everyone and good night

Yes, you’re the asshole of course
As the comments are yelling themselves hoarse
Your daughter is fine
She’s bilingual - don’t whine!
So thank god you’re showing remorse.

Sometimes, when I’m writing a scene where a problem is introduced, I suddenly have a “but what if they just–?” question. I used to freak out about it a lot, and sometimes I even considered rewriting large chunks of the story just because of one tiny question. The best way to approach something like that is to answer the “what if they just” question as it pops into your head. Have a character ask and make up some bullshit and suddenly you’re worldbuilding, not bullshitting, and you have this new tool you can use! Another thing you can do is have the characters only realize afterwards that they could have used an easier solution. That way, readers won’t feel like you’re just ignoring the solution– it’s just that your character didn’t think of it! This is especially useful when you’re using absentminded/reckless characters because they’re not as likely to weigh all of the options before they act. This can also be a good opportunity for character development. Your character may try not to make the same mistake twice which is an easy way of showing growth. Rewriting and ignoring these issues are valid, of course; do whatever makes you most comfortable!

And above all, keep writing.

the concept and idea of “you can always start trying to be a better person” is extremely important to me both in media and irl and i continue to be deeply deeply disturbed by the trend on this site pushing that these ideas in media are bad writing or even morally reprehensible

because theyd rather someone stay terrible or just straight up die than become a better person

from a compassionate point of view it’s deeply distressing
and from a pragmatic point of view it’s outright frustrating

it’s fucked up.

What is the most important step a man can take?

The next.

If you follow me on TikTok (I’m @sophieakatz there, too!), then you’ve heard this happy rant before. But I’m gonna share it here anyway, because it’s never a bad time to talk about Encanto!

One of the many ways that this film breaks the “rules” of marketable storytelling is with its huge cast of characters. The conventional wisdom is that you cannot develop a dozen main characters. The audience won’t be able to remember who is who, how everyone is related, or why they matter, and everyone will just come off as flat.

ButEncantopulls it off. You remember the characters, how they’re related, what they want, what they like and don’t like, and what their magical powers are – and you learn this QUICKLY.

Of course, this is in part due to the brilliant catchy songwriting of Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the clever color-coding of the families’ outfits, but that’s not all that’s going on here.

Encantodoes what The Incredibles did – it links superpowers to family roles.

InThe Incredibles, you had the strong dad who has to support the family, the super flexible mom who stretches herself thin making sure everyone is taken care of, the insecure teenager who wants to just disappear and push everyone away, the hyperactive little brother, and the baby with infinite potential.

Who they are and how they’re related to each other IS their superpower.

Now, let’s talk about la familia Madrigal.

You have the abuela, the matriarch, the guiding light of the family who maintains their tradition.

You have the aunt who’s always panicking about something, and if she’s not happy, nobody’s happy – she shifts the whole atmosphere of the home – and we have the uncle who loves and grounds and supports her.

You have the oddball uncle who nobody talks about but everybody blames for their problems.

You have the mother who makes you feel better with her cooking – and the bumbling father who needs her help.

You have the cousin who knows all the gossip about everybody.

You have the teenage cousin who doesn’t really know who he is yet and so he acts out a lot.

You have the littlest kid of the family who loves animals.

You have the insufferably perfect elder sibling who is under a lot of pressure to STAY perfect.

You have the middle sibling who supports everyone else, who shoulders the weight of everyone’s problems.

And you have the younger sibling who is constantly overlooked and who just wants to stand out and be important in this huge family for once.

We all know these people. We’ve BEEN these people. And because we know these people, we know who they are, how they’re related, and what their powers are.

Now, they still could all come off as flat stereotypes – but in Encanto, they don’t. And here’s why.

They each have an emotional problem that needs solving. That’s what rounds them into three-dimensional characters. They each need to grow and change and find a happy ending.

And how do you present the problems and the growing and changing of a dozen characters in an hour and a half animated movie?

YOU GIVE THEM ALL THE SAME PROBLEM.

They all believe that their magic is what makes them important, and they’re all under pressure to be useful. They need to learn that they have value in themselves just for being alive – not because of their abilities, not because of how useful they are – THEY ALL HAVE INHERENT WORTH. And they all figure this out together.

And it works so well!
