It’s a very sad time in Australia right now. Bushfires are devastating the country. I wanted to draw something to get the word out and list some ways we can help.

As governments discuss climate change in Paris, they’ll be referring to the dire predictions of climate scientists. Here are three visualizations of possible futures based on detailed climate models and summed up by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in their 2013 report. The deeper the red - the hotter things are getting.
There is nothing quite so predictable as the climate change report cycle. First, an authoritative organisation publishes a comprehensive report warning how dire the current situation is and how much of a difference we as individuals could make with even relatively small lifestyle changes, such as giving up meat and dairy. The next day a few thousand social influencers come to the rescue to reassure the public that no, they don’t have to make any changes at all to help because it’s all the fault of corporations anyway, so why should any of us have to try? And since it’s exactly what everyone wants to hear, we agree with it, spread it, pat ourselves on the back for being so “woke” then promptly forget that the report ever happened.
I HATE THIS
This is the only response I’ve seen to the report. I agree with placing blame onto corporations, but really? So that gives us all an excuse to sit on our asses?? Yes we need to vote and change policies but /we/ need to change too!! And besides, corporations aren’t going to save us. That’s not a thing that’s going to happen. Ever. We’ve gotta save the planet ourselves, and that means taking responsibility for our actions. What we eat, what we buy, what we do, all of it.
I am so jaded at this point that when I saw that report, the fact that it had a date, 2030, when I turn 34… I just emotionally shut down. I told myself “so this is how it ends… and all because people couldn’t stop eating meat and cheese”, and even then it doesn’t feel real.
How do you cope when there’s officially no hope left?
Who are the biggest polluters in the world? This question is often shrouded in mystery, but @guardian has written an exceptional series on the 20 biggest polluters on the planet, their impacts, and who owns them. Needless to say, the biggest polluters are primarily oil and gas companies. According to Guardian’s 9 October article, these 20 companies have knowingly produced about 35% of all greenhouse gas emissions from 1965 to 2017. The Guardian uses the year 1965 because that is when the oil companies became aware that burning fossil fuels was directly correlated to climate change. There is a paper trail indicating they knew the climate would start to destabilize around the year 2000. Another Guardian article examines how just 100 companies are responsible for 71% of all global emissions. Digging deeper, these same powerful companies have successfully diverted blame to the consumers (us) for the problem, without taking any responsibility for the part they play. It’s true that our individual choices matter. A recent study found that 72% of global greenhouse gas emissions comes from household decisions, such as personal vehicles, meat-based diets, housing, and heating and cooling. This doesn’t exonerate the biggest polluters in the world, many of which are investor-owned (some are owned by governments). These global conglomerates have known for decades the disaster that awaits us. Yet the oil executives continue to disseminate false information and promote climate change denialism, while they reap record profits, and the planet smothers and drowns. Our political systems have failed to stop it. So what can we do to stop it? Listed are 13 things we can do as individuals to help. The number one thing we can do is VOTE. Did you know that environmentalists don’t typically vote? Given the crisis we face, it’s all hands on deck at this point. If you are an environmentalist and if you live in a democracy, please vote and donate to politicians who will fight climate change and pollution. I dont want to get too off topic on this blog but since this is a somewhat big platform I want to talk about whats going on as we are facing the climate crisis head on.
Thousands of scientists all over the world are currently on protest in tears. No media is bringing this up. We should be seeing news about NASA scientists being arrested for asking to be heard but instead it is silent. Scientists say we have 3 years left to stop everything, we have the answers, but our governments arent listening. That we need to stop all new projects. Over 110,000+ new fossil fuel projects have been signed off in 2022. That should be concerning. Oil, gas and coal need to be stopped if we want a chance at survival and it needs to be talked about. We have 3 years, we have answers, we have alternatives and we need to government to act now. Theres a man on hunger strike just so the government will read the latest IPCC report. Just to look at a scientific document. They cant even do that.
And so so so so much more from flooding, new oil sign offs, etc.
If you are in a country thats just about to start elections, please look into parties that will do their part for the climate crisis. If you are not signed to vote, enrol asap. If youre in Australia, like me, you can enrol here by TODAY. (And maybe look into our third party system and what the greens have to offer? But i didnt tell you that..)
Look into protest groups like the Extinction Rebellion and see what protests are hapening nearby and what you can do to help. This is quite literally life or death for humanity and we cant risk ignoring it and letting it be ignored. We have to educate ourselves on whats going on, get mad and fight it. Because media is refusing to let us know of the doom were facing if our government continues to support oil, gas and coal the way they are. This isnt to make you feel doom, but encourage you to act to prevent doom.
