FINALLY got a little rack* for storage in the laundry room! This area has annoyed me since we moved in last July/August. My back doesn’t like reaching that high and that far away to get things off the shelf, and I don’t want to overload it. And, I actually swept and mopped the floor before putting it in. Even wiped down the washer and dryer.
Took about an hour to put the rack together and then clean and reorganize. Break time!
*The rack is a bathroom 3-shelf space saver but who says I can’t use it anywhere I want!
Galena, all oiled up. I also took the time to cut the slots for the cables but they’re at the back and also not very good, my chisel skills could use some work and my dad’s old chisels could use some more sharpening than I can provide with my pocket stone. At this point I think the wood is more reflective than the brass.
This came out really nicely: even colour, looks exactly like the test piece from yesterday, and I gave it that steel wool finish again. I’ll have to remove the edge keys and go round the brass one last time with some cotton buds and polish before final photos but that can wait for me to figure out the base.
The base will be acrylic, I’ll take measurements and get that laser cut by the same guy who made the base, and while that’s coming I can wire up and configure the split connections so that this can function as one unit rather than two independent chunks.
There’s still plenty of solvent soaked in to this wood so for now I’m back on my old keyboard while that offgases in another room. It’ll be ready by tomorrow.
Alison and Peter Smithson : The House Of The Future
There is already someone who envisioned how the future home looked like throughout the middle Fifties, a prototype was designed by well-known modernist architects Alison and Peter Smithson. Although it was never intended for actual production but for theoretical discussion.
The House of the Future was presented on Daily Mail Ideal Home Exhibition, held in the Olympia Exhibition Centre from March 6-31 1956. The drawings above shows how has been conceived this prototype for the exhibition. A gem for researchers and architecture enthusiasts.
Designed around a courtyard garden that supplied natural lighting and private outdoor space, there were few windows on the exterior walls allowing the houses to be placed directly side-by-side. For viewing purposes, there was no roof but an elevated platform so exhibition goers could look inside the house from above. Appliances and work areas were hidden from view within cubicles allowing for a large open space in which to live.
In the late years it was documented by the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) with more curational material related entitled “ What the Future Looked Like” ,there you’ll find “The Sound of the Future” text by Sabine von Fischer and Beatriz Colomina Lecture “Unbreathed Air“. [Link at the bottom]
