A paraphrased quote from Dave Simmons, leader of the strike, from his rally speech. “ 10% girls, beggars, physically disabled, old women, black people, and such “
Paraphrased due to ableist and racist language, full Quote here
Additional information as to why there were not more girl newsies: https://newsboys-of-1899.tumblr.com/post/173803174612/why-were-there-more-newsboys-than-newsgirls
My sincerest apologies, but I apparently can’t do fractions. The quote is “one-fifth” and that is twenty percent, not ten percent. That still would not affect the roughly 3-5% number that I stated again.

The Mona Lisa smile of Ukrainian model Sheela Asane (38D-28-35, 5 ft 8 in, 143 lbs, 1996- ).
Update:@eunectes correctly points out that the lovely model’s name is probably not Sheela Asane. In fact, MetArt identifies her only as “Sheela A.” It turns out that Asane –or, more accurately, Åsane– is a borough in the city of Bergen in Norway.

Tumblr has always been a fierce believer in free speech and the power it gives to the people who wield it. Throughout history, free speech has been the most important tool used to fight for racial and social justice. The protests being held in honor of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery are no different. They are important. They should not be ignored or derided. The disproportionate violence Black people face from those who have power in our country is not acceptable. It’s on all of us, regardless of race, to stand up for what is right, to demand justice, and to demand change.
Say their names.
Black lives matter.
Reblogging this because I checked the Tony McDade fund only to see it’s been changed to a fund for someone named Tony Bartlett, dating back to December 2019. Please correct this
thank you for flagging. We’ve fixed the link to a petition in our original post and will update the post further with the correct link when a truly official fund is available. Please continue spreading Tony McDade’s story

In Finnish we don’t say “dragon” we say “lohikäärme” which roughly translates to “salmon snake” and I think that’s beautiful.
Submitted by @noasadventures, with the help of @rragnaroksand@neeleys
[resource:Wiktionary,Wikipedia (in Finnish),Sanakirja.fiandWikisanakirja (in Finnish)]
Pet peeve strikes again.
Yes, it does sound like salmon snake to a modern speaker, but etymologically it’s something completely different: it’s an old loan from Old Swedish, floghdrake, that means a flying snake. Finns couldn’t pronounce the many consonants at the beginning of the word, so it changed in their mouths into lohi that sounds quite similar and happens to mean salmon. Käärme is a direct translation of the word drake, snake.
I’ve made a couple of posts about this, and will continue to do so as long as I see these translations going around. This is why language is so interesting.
Some red flags I’ve seen when reading posts here on Tumblr have been really common. Some posts are rather suspicious. I’m not saying all of these beings are bad or fake, but there’s a higher chance for these types of beings to be kinnies and not actual otherkin. I don’t know someone elses identity and I don’t claim to either. These are just some common misrepresentations I’ve seen flying around everywhere…
1. Kinning, kins, and being a kinnie for fun. Otherkin and therian isn’t a choice. It is not a trend, a fashion style, a fetish, or any of that nonsense. Not petplay, not pet regression… oh hunny no. It’s an identity, not a hobby. It is not a coping mechanism either, same thing as having fun or escaping reality. Otherkin is reality. You might want to look into the “furry fandom” or other fandoms if you think it is for fun.
2. Choosing a kintype / theriotype. This is simply not possible. Just because you think lions are badass or raccoons are cute and quirky, doesn’t mean you get to pick it yourself and pretend to be one. It is an identity, not a choice.
3. Kintype / theriotype appearance and separate beings. There is a difference between “this is my theriotype” and “Oh this pic looks like me.” You don’t get to customize what your theriotype looks like. Sorry, but no, you aren’t a pure white wolf fox cat hybrid with four wings and neon blue eyes with magical powers named Luna. Kintype don’t have names. It is you! You can have a nickname like anyone else, but not your kintype. Your kintype is a general species, not an individual who’s separate from yourself!!
Oh goodness, I’ve gotten carried away ranting but these are some of the biggest things that bother me. There’s many more things that are misrepresentitive, like “kin is just quadrobics” or “I’m an angry animal who wants to kill every human ever” or “kin is just extreme furries” which is all false for many reasons… but that’s for another day. Let me rest before I handle those ones next.

Tell us about the country you live in! Where do you live? What languages do they speak in your country? What’s the weather like? Does your country have some foods/drinks/monuments that are typical for your country?

* the Oxford comma is not a thing in Dutch
** this is right but “Daarom moet je elke dag op het internet kijken voorde weersvoorspelling” is more natural
*** okay we were big time confused about this because we could not for the love of God decide whether “Lakota” is an adjective or a noun here (because that would affect whether you’d write is as one word or as two words). Not that it matters that much, because “de Lakota” is much more natural anyway!
**** again grammatically completely correct, but “een belangrijke spirituele betekenis heeft voor de Lakota” is more natural.
Your virtually only problem here would be word order, but only so in more complex sentences. You’re doing a great job, keep up the good work!
It is a lie that women have been able to vote since 1920.
White women have been able to vote since 1920. All Native American women couldn’t vote until 1924. All Asian women couldn’t vote until 1952. All Black women couldn’t vote until 1964.
In five years there is probably going to be some big centennial celebration of women’s suffrage. But that will be a whitewashing of history. It will be an event that erases the struggles of non-white women. It will be an event that will try to hide the fact that white feminists heros like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton actively argued against the rights of people of color in order to advance their own goals.
okay so this is a good post but uh
native americans couldn’t vote in 1924.
we became citizens in 1924, in an attempt at assimilation, but this was apparently so foggy it had to be reaffirmed in 1940 so native american’s could be drafted.
but native people didn’t gain full voting right until 1964, including native women.
I’m so sorry. I should have done more research. I assumed citizenship meant voting rights, but that was naive of of me considering how much the US government hates indigenous peoples.
This post is really broad. It speaks more in terms of laws than actual conditions on the ground. Because if we take into account barriers like linguistic barriers, voter ID laws, gerrymandering, and inaccessible polling places our right to vote is still being repressed. Similarly to the way slavery still hasn’t been fully gotten rid off, we still don’t really have equal suffrage.

#btw this native women voting stuff was only if they gave up their indian status #they couldnt vote as actual natives til the late 60s #in canada at least - primadonna-grrrl
I didn’t know that. That’s horrible and disgusting. I’m actually pretty sure that counts as an act of genocide.
But fyi everyone should know that this info is only correct for the USA. I should have specified that originally.
