Writing believable friendships

Even without taking their backstory into account, your characters’ friendship in the present should be believable enough to allow your readers to root for them.

1. Both ways

This is the number one rule for the friendship to be healthy and believable - affection, communication, help, and everything else should go both ways. You can’t have one character always asking for help and the other always helping while never getting anything in return, or a character always showing affection while the other never reciprocating it - the friendship needs to go both ways.

2. Similar or different

Friends can either be very similar or different, and both are interesting to write about! If they’re similar, they will usually get along pretty well. However, it also leads to the potential of more bickering with each other, since their personalities will clash. Just imagine two equally stubborn or talkative characters in a disagreement

If they’re different, they’ll be able to complement each other well (eg. the troublemaker and responsible one). However, you will still need to give them a common similarity to bond over. Maybe it’s a shared hobby or favorite animal!

3. Communication and trust

Friends can either be all giggly and soft around each other or bicker 24/7, depending on their friendship dynamic and the personalities of the characters. However, a constant thing to keep in a healthy friendship is the ability to trust and communicate with each other.

Friends should trust each other, not leaving each other for a love interest or some whack reason. They should also know the best ways to communicate with each other. Even with friends who bicker a lot, the arguments should be playful. They should always know and avoid the topics that are off limits and would truly hurt the other.

4. Flesh them out individually

Most of the time, there’s only one main character in the friend group, and the rest only act as their friend and nothing more. They don’t have any other role in the story besides being the main character’s friend.

While you can’t always dive into the backstory and depth of the other characters, especially if your story is only from one pov, you should still fully flesh them out. Give then strengths, weaknesses, hobbies, goals, quirks, etc. Make sure that everyone in their friend group are their own person, not just a supporting character for someone else.

5. Reason to stick together

Your character will meet so many people throughout their life, but they can’t keep in touch with all of them. Chances are, they’ll “abandon” old friends for new ones they just met. If you want to write a long-lasting friendship, you’ll need to find that key reason why they choose to stick together despite their hardships.

Maybe they ever saved each other’s lives in the past? Or maybe they live close to each other, so it’s easier to maintain their friendship. There are lots of possibilities!

6. Different friendship dynamics

Tips for New Writers

After some time off to finish uni and recover, the writing tips are back! I had some requests for this post so whether you’re new to writing or looking to start, here are my top tips.

1. Start a Passion Project

If you’re hung up over your first story getting published, you’ll start to hate it. Your first project should be something you love enough to finish it for you. I honestly recommend fanfiction as it’s a great way to get early feedback and become used to critique, but an own story is just as good as long as you join a critique group.

2. Join a Writing Community

Whether that’s on Instagram, Tumblr, a real-life society, or somewhere else entirely, there are many reasons to join the writer’s community with a platform of your own. It’s the best way to find Critique Partners (CPs), Beta Readers, as well as a wealth of tips that will improve your writing.

3. Explore Planning Methods

You’ll need to use trial and error to decide what works best for you. Try fully outlining, diving straight in, Beat Sheets, Flash Cards, Ten Steps Ahead, or even just making lists of what you want to show. One will work for you, but it’s different for everyone.

4.Write

Write as often as you can. Nothing makes writing stronger than practice. It doesn’t have to be “good” or neat or pretty, but words should go on the page. Don’t let your insecurities keep you from filling that blank page.

I went to the aquarium for my birthday

K, I know this isn’t my usual content, but I haven’t seen you all in almost a month soooo

Isn’t that doooooorbs!? ❤ K so I love sea horses and to me they represent the normalcy and beauty of the non binary in nature If you didn’t know; the [males] carry, develope, and birth the babies. In light of recent human and constitutional rights violations in the United States, with the “dont say gay” infringements, which puts already vulnerable kids and their care givers at extreme risk; if you’re looking for a positive, non aggressive, scientific way to broach gender fluidity with really anyone ….point them in the direction of a children’s book called Mister Seahorse by Eric Carle ->

Not only is the artwork beautiful and INTERACTIVE !! But it gently leads the reader through different gender roles and non conforming fluidity of many sea creatures ❤

I also got this insanely cravable mug!!! I desire nothing more than utilitarian art !! Like the table for instance It’s not dirty; it looks like water!!

Ok so @eatmysweat tagged me to add a playlist I’ve had on loop. Well as most of you know, I’ve been going through some things, and honestly only one artist has been on, for the last few weeks straight. This is Kitajima Toru, or TK from Ling Tosite Sigure.

If you don’t know them, trust you’ve heard their music before. They are a prolific vocalist, composer, and multi instrumentalist. Sooooo many bands, and the whole early 2000s screamo genre, was taken to a whole next level by this otherworldly genius! Though that brand of metal died out, TK has continued to stun the recording industry, and NO ONE has ever been able to truly replicate this type of progressive, emotion driven music, like they do. While all my friends were playing My Chemical Romance, AFI, HIM, and that whole scene; I was walkin my ass to the bus stop, in my skinny jeans, silently screaming along to the master, on my blown out shuffle!!

You don’t have to like this style of music in general, to be able to enjoy and instantly understand why sooooo many musicians, across the board, look up to TK as a visionary. If you like Centimillimental, you will like TK, I promise. Although it’s much heavier, and they have a voice as delicate as a razor, but it’s a perfect tenor. Breathy, genderless, yet perfect.

*Side note: I have a lot of reasons to think TK was very likely the main inspiration for Haruki, in many ways.

I was hoping to get some of their lyrics as a tattoo for my birthday last week, but that didn’t work out, due to finances just know that’s how much I love them and they’re one of the artists that get me through. Maybe you’ll find strength in their music, too. If you like this playlist, they’re even better live! Lemme put it to you like this; a pro musician was over for a min the other day, and they stopped and stared at the live concert, I was playing. They couldn’t even break away to finish their sentence! TK is that good !!

They’re also adorable ❤ and could kick your bfs ass!! Just sayin
