Today marks the release of Mulan and with that the reveal of her new guardian, a Fenghuang! You’ll most likely see it being described or translated as a phoenix all though the similarities are purely superficial. While I love Mushu, and I get the upset from some folks, a Fenghuang makes more sense from a cultural perspective. I’m interested to see how this is adapted and incorporated. Anyway, heres a new “Chinese phoenix” and one I made a while back.

In doing a little more research, it looks as though Mulan will be getting a Fenghuang as her loyal companion. I’m totally fine with this change if that’s what happens. It would make complete sense from a cultural/mythological perspective since the Fenghuang represents the feminine aspect, while the Long(dragon) represented the male. Although when it comes to Mulan she pretty much encompassed both male and female aspects perfectly.

A little on the Fenghuang if you care to know. The Fenghuang is commonly conflated with the western Phoenix. Despite their superficial similarities, the Phoenix’s eastern cousin would more likely be the Vermillion Bird, not the Fenghuang (Although some sources use them interchangeably). The Fenghuang is more a heavenly beast, ruler of all birds, and represents the feminine aspect of Yin. Each part and color of their body symbolizes a different celestial body and virtue while the Vermillion Bird is one of the Four guardians of Chinese Cosmology according to Wu Xing it represents the fire-element, the direction south, and the season summer.

You can find statues of these beauties on Taoist and Buddhist temples throughout Asia.

It’s pretty sad and messed up

that we celebrate because Disney actually hired Chinese actors to play Chinese characters.

Like, we shouldn’t have had to worry in the first place, but knowing Disney/Hollywood’s track record…

You know a movie is bad when people start with the phrase “visuals are stunning.”

Mulan actress was blunt without emotion, the movie could have so much more emotion and humanity and doesn’t make us feel nothing at all.

Also she’s perfect. She have the special chi, she’s the chosen one bullshit. That’s not what Mulan original meaning, Mulan works hard tries so hard and this chick are just perfect in every fight she never struggles! Whats wrong with a daughter that wants to fight for her father instead of the calling to fight for China? Wants wrong with humbleness and working hard and fail sometimes?

So the message is, women must be better than the men so that men can accept us. We are teaching little girls that they must be perfect always with this Rey and Captain Marvel.

That’s message is so conflicted and wrong.

The new live action of Mulan gave me sapphic vibes. I can’t be the only one who felt it.

Modern Mulan

nixtevs-hugo-boss:

this is going around twitter rn but im also super curious: please tell me your top four comfort movies that you’re always down to watch bc my friend thinks mine are ridiculous and now we’ve realised everyone’s version of “comfort” is hilariously different

One of Disney’s best sidekicks ~ Mushu

Extra:

Choose your alias wisely

Otherwise it will bother you for the rest of your life

Live action Disney mulan uses the most white washed definition of “chi” I have ever heard and turns it into “magic” (?????) and i - lol???

#mulan when xixi said it was late for her nad that the people will accept #mulan but not her it showed the fact that as time
passes and people realize and opt out of social superstitions. people might not hadaccepted xixi at her time but it was different
as the time was different. In Ruth Bader GInsberg’s biograpic movie “on the basis of sex” it was shown that what she thought was
impossible her daughter did it and she only shouted at people on the streets. From women rights to voting rights what women in the
previous era would think it to be impossible not modern people would and that’s the evolution of mindset and society.

guys. GUYS. GUYS.
